How do I participate in the contest?
To enter, join this group by clicking the "Join" button next to the group's name and add your entry to the photo pool. You may only submit an image that you have taken yourself.

How many photos can I submit to Your Best Shot 2020?
Only one (1). The idea is for us all to take a moment to browse through our photos from the year and pick the one that's our absolute favorite. The photo must have been uploaded to Flickr in 2020. Submissions will be accepted from December 1 through January 4, 2021.

How do I add a photo to the group?
Join the group 2) Go to any photo page from your photostream 3) Below the image, click “Add to group.” 4) Select this group (you must be a member first) 5) Select Done.

If you're looking for the steps specific to our mobile app, check out this article.

I changed my mind about my favorite shot this year. Can I submit a second photo?
We know this can happen. While you cannot submit a second photo, you can remove your first submission and replace it with your new selection. Please be mindful when doing this. Repeatedly adding and removing your image with the sole purpose of increasing views may get you banned.

Can I add a picture I took in 2019, but added to Flickr in 2020?
The group is for photos uploaded in 2020. While we technically allow photos that have been taken at any point, the true spirit of Your Best Shot is to submit a photo that was taken this year. This also factors into the judging process.

I want some additional exposure for my favorite photo. Will you show it anywhere outside of the group?
We will be publishing a number of our favorite photos grouped into various themes on a series of Flickr galleries throughout December and January, giving your photos some great exposure. As noted in the rules, we may select lower-resolution versions of some of the images to promote them on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), always with attribution crediting you.

Are there any prizes?
This year, ten (10) winners will each be gifted a free year of the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography pack and a lifetime subscription to the DxO Nik editing plug-in collection. We’ve invited a select panel of five photographers from the Flickr community and have appointed a group of Flickr staff members to select the winning images.

***Please note: you must add your image to the photo pool for it to qualify as an official submission for the contest. Images embedded in threads but not in the photo pool won't be eligible for prizes.***

If you'd like to know more or have any other questions, let us know right here in the comments.

Having fun celebrating the best? It’s 2020, and we’re also celebrating the worst from a year unlike any other, so come over to Your Worst Shot 2020 and show us the photos that didn't go as planned.

Hello!

I would like to have more clarity around this point from above:

While we technically allow photos that have been taken at any point, the true spirit of Your Best Shot is to submit a photo that was taken this year. This also factors into the judging process.

While I am eager to participate, because I have a wealth of photos I am still going through from the end of 2019 that have not been posted anywhere, I feel like it may not be worth the effort if "factors into the judging process" effectively means "it is not likely that your photo will be chosen".

Like many people this year, it has been necessary to almost fully quarantine myself. Not only has travel been an impossibility, most days going outside is impractical. In doing so I have chosen the safety of my loved ones, as well as of healthcare and essential workers, over my beloved hobby.

While everyone has different circumstances, I feel that those of us in similar positions, who mainly specialize in outdoor photography, are at a massive disadvantage to those that have been able to bear the risk, go outside, and take part in their craft this year.

I understand that despite this, it still may not be possible to fully include photos into the competition that were not taken during 2020, and that we would still be allowed to participate "in spirit". I would simply like to understand up front if participation in the contest is realistic, or not.

Thanks for reading!

Disclaimer: although I am a moderator for this group, I am not employed by Flickr, and I do not know anything about the judging (or the judges) except what everybody knows, i.e. what is written in the rules. My purpose here is to delete photos that are not from 2020.

In my opinion, you are over-thinking this. Select your favourite photo of the year. Share it with us. We're all just here to enjoy the pretty pictures. I'll be happy to see it.

Photos in the main group pool are the photos entered into the contest, provided they meet all other rules.

No, no code. You can mention the group in your comment on the photo page if you choose.

The "topic threads" are not related to the contest. That is just people having fun and sharing their photos with each other.

Here is some help for how to add your photo to discussion topics:

Rick in Plattsburgh says:

I looked at 45+ pages of photos submitted by users of Flickr last night - here is what grabbed my attention:

Photos that had people in them [very few this year btw]
Mountain scenes [I have plenty of those already]
Wispy waterfalls [many were nicer than mine, and who wants to give away our special spots?]
Astro-photography [some wow pictures, Saturn for one, but a telescope, clear sky and some good knowledge to what to look for and where is needed]

So I was looking for something that was a bit out of the norm to get some attention to my page - and so far it has worked in a huge jump today! My goal at the end of 2020 is to have more hits on my Flickr page than deaths by CoVid in the US at years end. Thanks, Flickr friends!

Yes, that is against the spirit and the rules. The contest is one entry per person.

In order to do this you need to construct a special URL by hand. You will need the photo ID of your photo. The photo ID is the numeric part that comes after your name/user ID on the photo page URL, not including any slashes before or after:

...ckr.com/photos/hanna_adina/50688057871

Then, replace the "PHOTOID" in this URL with your own photo ID:
www.flickr.com/groups/yourbestshot2020/pool/with/PHOTOID/

Here is yours:
www.flickr.com/groups/yourbestshot2020/pool/with/50688057871

Note: This also requires you to have the "groups beta" experience turned on.

There are no such constraints mentioned in the Official Rules.

Hello,
I don't understant the discussions 'Your best [theme] shot 2020". What are they supposed to be used for?

Are we supposed to post in one/many of those discussions to participate once the picture is added to the main pool ?

Thanks for your answer and for the organization of the challenge.

All the best,

Aurel

All of the "theme" discussions are just for fun. They don't have anything to do with the contest, and they are not required.

Am I right that all 17K+ photos are judged on individual merit. Meaning the judges will look at all the photos and pick the winners, a daunting task. It should not be a social media popularity contest, as in who gets the most "likes" wins. Am I right?

From the official rules:

The Judging Panel will determine the winners based on the following selection criteria: originality, creativity, and skill.

I'm not sure what your email has to do with participation in this group. If you want to add a photo to this group's pool, you need to change the safety flag on that photo from "restricted" to "safe". If you cannot change the safety flag, there may be a sanction on your account. You will have to sort that sanction out with flickr help heroes..

Aww, it closed... I know that a small entry date extension would be greatly appreciated by many Flickr members (not me, I submitted a photo to the pool). Between the holidays, and Covid, politics... something as simple as a photo contest can be a welcome diversion.
