Hi all, It’s finally here, what you’ve been waiting for all year: Your Best Shot 2018! We’ll be accepting submissions between December 1, 2018, and January 7, 2019. Keep in mind, you may only submit one photo that was uploaded in 2018, so take your time to find your favorite shot. Five awesome winners, chosen by Flickr staff, will receive a Peak Design bag and a SmugMug Pro subscription.

Here are some quick answers to frequently asked questions about the group:

How many photos can I submit to Your Best Shot 2018?

Only one (1). The idea is for us all to take a moment to browse through our photos from the year and pick the one that's our absolute favorite.

I changed my mind about my favorite shot this year. Can I submit a second photo?

We know this can happen. While you cannot submit a second photo, you can remove your first submission and replace it with your new selection.

I want some additional exposure for my favorite photo. Will you show it anywhere outside of the group?

We will be publishing a number of our favorite photos grouped into various themes on the Flickr Blog throughout December and January, so you may get some visibility if your photo is selected. The selection is purely based on our editors and curators, who will be making the final decisions. Finally, as noted in the rules, we may use a selection of lower-resolution versions of the selected photos on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest) to promote the selections.

I've read you've got prizes this year. How does the YBS 2018 contest work?
This year, for the first time, five winners will each be gifted a Peak Design bag and a SmugMug Pro account. Have more questions about how the YBS contest works? Visit our YBS Contest FAQs and read the Contest Official Rules.

***Please note: for your photo to qualify as an official submission for the contest, make sure you add it to the photo pool. Images that are embedded in threads but not in the actual pool won't qualify as submissions.***

If you'd like to know more or have any other questions, let us know right here in the comments.
Since we have many photographers at different levels on Flickr is there a possibility that you "in the future" add different levels for the contests. Such as beginners, amatures, professionals and maybe those with bridge cameras, DSLRs, camera phones etc. The average hobbyist here can feel rather hopeless seeing some of the remarkable photos being submitted
Thanks,
Sue

Thanks for the suggestion! We will use your feedback for future improvement. All types of photographers are encouraged to join, from amateur to professional, and everything else in between! For the contest piece of it: the 5 winners will be selected based on criteria such as originality, creativity, and skill, but our judges will consider photographers of all skill levels.
Cannot wait to see the pool.... luv this time of year here on Flickr!!! Woot Woot!!!

Sure wish could do the BEST of Flickr Video 2018, maybe next year?
Suggestion:

Last year there was this "discussion" named "How did you choose Your Best Shot?" which was a nice way to know more about that particular photo a user decides it's their best one of the year: maybe it's the one with the most views/favs, maybe it's the memories it brings, you name it.

There's not such thread this year. I know, I know, I can start it myself, but I think it's better if, as it was last year, it's a "sticky" one. Maybe I can start it and then an admin could make it stick, but that would be a bit odd to me as well.

Thank you.

I have a shot that is actually photomanipulation. I took both pictures and put them together in Photoshop. Would this be allowed into the contest?

Pierced Heart Art:

Good question, "photomontage" and photography are two worlds sometimes intertwined... Creative photomontage is allowed in the group.

Why do the contest rules require us to waive moral rights? Under US law that basically covers the right to claim authorship and to disavow offensive modifications. What reasonable purpose could you have for wanting us to waive those rights?

taylor_pj:

Hi Taylor, the contest rules don't require you to waive moral rights.

>>>"By entering, you grant SmugMug, Inc. permission to use your photo for the duration of one (1) year in any medium, including to edit, publish, distribute, and republish it in any form, including but not limited to: social media, marketing emails, website creative, and paid media, for illustration, art, promotion, trade, or any other purpose whatsoever for future promotions of the Contest. The image use will always contain the credit line with the name of the owner, and will never be sold at any time for profit. Photographers retain the copyright to their images."

Can you clarify which part you are referring to? Thanks!

The contest rules are different from the group rules. The rules you're referencing are the general group rules - note that they are the same rules that we used in 2017 and all previous years. While I can't speak to the exact reason why that language was added in the past, I can tell you that the primary intention of the rules is to ensure we have your consent to promote you and your work. We're not going to sell your photo, nor do anything that would make you mad. This is a celebration of Flickr!

Just to verify your above statement -

A photo taken any time prior to Jan. 1st, 2018 qualifies as long as it was uploaded in 2018?

So I can scan one of my old film negs from the '70s, upload it in the next day or two, and it qualifies?

*most curious*
Rog in AZ:

It seems so, no matter how weird it may sound.

That is correct.

Thanks for your response.

I was curious as I kept seeing photos taken pre-2018, some of them many years ago, in the group pool.

You may occasionally also see some that are uploaded pre-2018, but we work on cleaning those out ("by hand") periodically.

Hi there,
first of all, thanks for this wonderful group and contest. One little question:

At the Starting page close to the header you can read:
Your Best Shot 2018 ends Jan. 7 at 0:00 AM UTC.
The post of Leticia contains the information:
Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. PST on January 7th, 2019.
I guess this makes a huge difference.
Which information is right?
Regards, Laurent

You're right, Laurent. I've corrected the header. Your Best Shot 2018 ends Jan. 7 at 11:59 p.m. PST. (I don't recommend waiting until the last minute, though.)

Can I ask about the signing over of licensing? It says that SmugMug etc gain royalty free sub-licensing over photos submitted to the pool. I get it for promotion of SmugMug/Flickr products etc, but I'm unsure about how photographs will be used after the fact.

Genuine question and not looking to pick holes or anything :)

jpearce2307:

Leticia can you give you the official explanation as a staff member, but I'm pretty sure it just means we are giving Flickr permission to share our images through their social media channels, websites, marketing communication etc...and the sub-licensing part means that this includes when they do distribution of a SmugMug product on a third party site, service, product, application or platform, etc

Here's a comment by Flickr staff (Leticia) elsewhere in this group:
www.flickr.com/groups/1621376@N22/discuss/721576771436622...

the primary intention of the T&C's is to ensure we have your consent to promote you and your work (on the Flickr blog, social media, etc. and always with credit to the photographer). That's it. We're not going to sell your photo, nor do anything that would make you mad.

The image will never be sold at any time for profit. Photographers retain the copyright to their images. These are the same rules we use every year. This is just a celebration of Flickr!

Winning photographs will be used for promotion within Flickr/SmugMug. That may include social media, the website, or any other purpose whatsoever for future promotions of the contest for the duration of one (1) year.

We always communicate with the photographer(s) to ensure that they're ok with it all.

"Uploaded to Flickr in 2018" is the primary stated rule, but for these few remaining days we are also accepting "taken in 2018".

Will it cause any harm if I swap in a higher resolution version of my submission? I uploaded a (relatively) low res JPG of my submission by mistake. Now my inner nerd is struggling.

mockdaveford:

No problem at all, you can delete the other photo from the pool and add another. This is perfectly reasonable. What we do NOT allow is people repeatedly deleting and re-adding photos for the sole purpose of getting more attention on their photos. THAT's uncool.
mockdaveford 2 months ago
Darren LoPrinzi:

I would normally use [edit photo] -- [replace]. That would accomplish my goal and be simpler... than re-adding the image?

I have no dog in this hunt, and I've really enjoyed following the daily adds to the pool as the deadline loomed.

Lots of incredible images.

But what's with all the posters adding big numbers to the threads, post deadline, seemingly circumventing the rules of "One photo/entry per person only, and photo must have been uploaded after Jan 1, 2018?"

Is "image dumping" and "view whoring" allowed in the threads?

And if so, why?

(Just a curious lurker.)
admin
mag3737 2 months ago
The threads don't have anything to do with the contest. The only photo that matters for the contest is the one photo that you put in the group pool. All the rest is just folks having fun sharing.

Yes, the pool for this group, and also entries for the contest, closed on January 7th. I'm not sure what is the point to your question.
Angelo Petrozza 2 months ago
I'm sorry if I'm not clear .....there are people who continue to post also after January 7th ... is this normal?
admin
mag3737 2 months ago
The discussion threads (including this one) are still open and people are welcome to continue participating in discussions, including all of the threads where people are posting "Your best So-and-So shot of 2018".

This has nothing to do with the contest. The contest applies only to the Group Pool (aka the "Photos" section) of the group. The Group Pool was closed on January 7th.

Claro ;-)
Well there are 8000 submissions and they are inspiring to say the least... I don't expect to win, but I have hope! Regardless, it is an honor to have my photo among such beautiful work. Good luck to everyone! Saludos from Chile!
