The Netherlands (Dutch: Nederland) (IPA: [ˈne:dərlɑnt]) is the European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Dutch: Koninkrijk der Nederlanden), which consists of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles, and Aruba. The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy, located in northwestern Europe. It is bordered by the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east. The current borders were established in 1839.

The Netherlands is often referred to by the name Holland. This is not terminologically precise, as the provinces of North and South Holland in the western Netherlands are only two of the country's twelve provinces (for more on this and other naming issues see Netherlands (terminology)).

The Netherlands is a densely populated and geographically low-lying country and is popularly known for its windmills, cheese, clogs (wooden shoes), dikes, tulips, bicycles and social tolerance. Its policies are liberal toward drugs, prostitution, same-sex marriage, abortion and euthanasia. The country is host to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the European Union's criminal intelligence agency (Europol) at The Hague...more

"Fall Colors"

-- from Koocheekoo - (?)

Amsterdam, Vondelpark (October 2006) - I liked the fall colors in Vondelpark and the trees around the pond.

In 1864 a group of prominent Amsterdammers formed a committee to found a public park. They raised money to buy 8 hectares of land and the architect L.D. Zocher was commissioned to design the park as an English landscape. They used vistas, ponds and pathways to create an illusion of a natural area. The park was open to public in 1865 as a horseback riding and strolling park named Nieuwe Park. The name Vondelpark was adopted in 1867 when a statue of Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel was situated into the park. The committee soon raised money to enlarge the park and by 1877 it reached its current space of 45 hectares. At that time its location was on the edge of Amsterdam, since then it has become central in the city, close to Leidseplein and Museumplein.

"Kinder Kart"

-- from Koocheekoo - (?)

Amsterdam, Vondelpark (October 2006) - This was a common way to cart around kids throughout Amsterdam and especially in Vondelpark. Not sure it would fly in the states with all our safety laws, but the kids loved it.

"Roof Pulleys"

-- from Koocheekoo - (?)

Amsterdam (October 2006) - Dutch houses and rows of roof pulleys. Originally used to pull goods up to storage in the attic. Now commonly used to move into the upper floors as the stairs are so narrow.

I took this picture on 01-10-2006 not far from the main train station in Groningen, when we came home from a few days in Prague, Czech Republic.
I am posting this picture, because M. went to Moscow, Russia last week Saturday, and he will be home tonight. If he looks out of the window of train at the right moment, he will see this.

Homomonument

Unveiled in Amsterdam on September 5, 1987, the Homomonument is one of the world's foremost public memorials of the lesbians and gay men who were harassed, imprisoned, or executed during World War II. While the monument officially remembers the suffering and attempted elimination of homosexual men and women during the Third Reich, it was more widely conceived and executed as a broad acknowledgment of the persecution endured by gay men and lesbians throughout history.

The monument was also intended to function as a political touchstone for the continued fight against hatred and oppression in contemporary times.

The Bosmolen polder mill is a windmill which grinds water from a polder. Water is pumped by a scoop rad or by a jack (propeller of Archimedes) from the polder. This type of mill is still working especially in the lower layer polder areas of West - and the Nothern part of Holland.

This lane for bikers leads to the castle of Gunterstein next to the river de Vecht in Breukelen. Breukelen is a municipality and town in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. It is situated to the north west of Utrecht, along the river Vecht and close to the Loosdrechtse Plassen, an area of lakes and great natural beauty. During the 17th century a number of Amsterdam merchant families built opulent mansions along the river near Breukelen.

The borough of Brooklyn, New York in the United States, is named after Breukelen
