The Salton Sea is heavily polluted by chemicals from industrialized agriculture. The fish die by the thousands, migratory birds are poisoned, and the surrounding communities are ghosts of their former selves.

We saw a huge amount of thick smoke ahead of us and as we got closer we saw the fire truck rushing to put out a huge trash fire someone had started in a beautiful field of wildflowers and butterflys.

I enter this image as a bit of a hopeful story.

This is O.S.A. (Ontario Society of Artists) Lake, situated in Killarney Provincial Park. In the early 20th century this landscape was ravaged by acid rain causing the lakes to die. Basically they became so acidic that not even microbes could survive in them. Also, logging companies were beginning to cut the trees here.

Now, A. Y. Jackson (a painter of the Group of Seven) loved to paint in this area. Seeing the destruction that was being done he appealed to the Ontario Government. This area is now part of a 50,000 ha wilderness class Provincial Park, the logging was halted and the acid damage is being rehabilitated. Most lakes in the park have returned to the state they were in prior to the industrial revolution. Unfortunately O.S.A. has been one of the slowest to recover. It is now healthy enough to support some wildlife, but the water is still eerily clear due to low plankton levels and acidity.
