I'm currently building a database (using the Flickr APIs) of all the plane photographs in this group. For now, only those photos which are tagged with the registration number are being picked up by my script. I can then know the unique number of aircraft spotted, since a lot of planespotters post more than one photograph of the same plane. :)

Once all the photos are processed, I'll publish a country-wise list of aircraft.

My next effort is to hit rzjets.net, and grab aircraft details for each of the registration numbers, and then I'd be able to publish stats airline-wise, aircraft model-wise, etc.

Watch this space.

Interesting idea - and a nice way to explore the flickr api.

Hi teemus, that would be really great. I'm looking forward to seeing this :-)

Alright, out of 4523 photos in this group (as I write this), 3619 photos are tagged with the registration number of the aircraft - that's 80.01%.

These 3619 photos cover 2929 unique aircraft, which means that 80.93% of correctly-tagged photos are unique.

I shall periodically keep scanning the latest photos and collect registration numbers from tags.

Now, onto writing the script that gets aircraft/airline information from the registration number. :)

AI.net has all the stats you need. :-)

How does your script know which tag is the registration number?

@premshree: It's not about stats. It's about mapping the Flickr photos in this group to plane details, in one single database. It's a Planespotting Mashup of sorts! ;)

@albspotter: Regular expressions + some code intelligence. :)

You could try www.airfleets.net . I use it to get details of aircraft, once I get the registration code.

Alright, some more statistics:

sumeet.info/files/aircraft-stats.txt

Gives a break-up by aircraft make, model and airline.

Good job. Now we need a web frontend to your database which presents some stats and rankings in smaller chunks of information. And maybe regular polls and stats over time. 8-)

Good stuff.. interesting to see broken down like that. I noticed there are stats for Air Canada Jazz but but not Air Canada itself.. so perhaps you could update that. It would be nice to see photographer matches as well. Polls would be a nice feature. I don't think Flickr offers them though.

What I ment with "polls" were simply snapshots of the flickr data on a regular basis, as the one linked above. So one could query something like "Which type of aircraft has been spotted most often in Q4, 2006", "When has aircraft A-1234 been spotted" and so on...
