Sewing is not a new concept; people have been doing it in some shape or form for years but with the arrival of disposable fashion and busy lives sewing became a chore and was mostly forgotten about. Why would anyone want to spend their time making or mending something when garments are so cheap? Here lies the problem, the textile industry is among the largest creators of waste. Cheaply made fashion intended to last a season then be thrown away is a huge contributing factor to the way our world is today. There are many positive reasons to making our own in addition to saving our planet. We learn the skill of sewing which is very helpful throughout our lives, everyone should know the basics! We can get creative and customise our wardrobes to suit our own personal tastes, save money in the process and feel proud when someone compliments the outfits we wear and we can tell them “I made it myself!”
Handmaker's Factory is born from our previous venture Wardrobe Refashion which ran for 5 years but eventually outgrew its humble beginnings. Initially beginning as a website, Handmaker's Factory offers members an online community in which they can interact with other worldwide members, share their own creations and learn about the impact their clothing choices make. The site has always been positioned as the first stage of the business with a studio space in Melbourne to follow.
In times of economic hardship, it’s so satisfying to be able to clothe yourself and your loved ones, and with the environment suffering more than ever, it’s also good to know that your choice in making your own is resulting in a far lighter footprint. Together we really can change the world - we’ll start with the perfect pants then we can move onto fabulous frocks.
