Project: Utata Thursday Walk #700

view profile

Computer Science Geek is a group administrator Computer Science Geek says:

Seven hundred is a big number. In the Unix/Linux operating system a permission setting on a file or directory of 700 means that only the root or administrator can see, create, or remove that file or directory. That's a big deal. It contains one of my favourite numbers, which everyone knows is very lucky. In the Julian calendar system the year 700 was a leap year that began on a Thursday. Speaking of Thursdays, we have a tradition of taking a photo walk that began 700 weeks ago.

That's right folks, 700 consecutive Thursdays where Utatans have ventured out with a camera and walked about taking pictures and sharing it in this thread with a single small image as a sample. So we can tag our photos for this Utata Thursday Walk with utata:project=tw700. Okay, I know it's only Wednesday as I post this, but it is already Thursday in some parts of the world. And because that is so, today is also a special collaboration with Flickr. We are opening this particular Thursday to everyone in Flickr and invite them to join us. So welcome everyone. If it's Thursday in your local time zone, go forth and take some photos. Share them with us here and tell us a little bit about yourselves or your photos.

I should have been on Naoshima Island back in August, but a typhoon had other plans. The typhoon obviously planned ahead because instead I was there for the 700th Thursday walk. Thank you Phil. This ongoing project has indirectly inspired me to get out of the house and see the best in even the greyest days.

That Old Tree

No more than 10C as I made my way to the old tree earlier today. It really felt like an early Autumn day which it probably was although the meteorologists have promised that Summer will return tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Golden Scalycaps

My first Utata Thursday Walk . . .

I chose my regular route through woodland near my home. Autumn fungi are appearing, including this attractive group of Golden Scalycaps, an uncommon species in the UK

A great project. Happy 700 folks!

Same here in South-West Germany.

I started my Thursday Walk at a sad place, the Memorial for the victims of the Ramstein Air Show disaster of 1988. Then I drove up to the forest, to the only sports ground I know with own pagan sanctuary: a Celtic Menhir.

Ohne Titel Today I left to visit my new appartement where I shall relocate in October. I had to pass several zebra crossings.
Now in half an hour I will leave for the opening of the 'Steirischer Herbst' (Styrian Autumn Festival) opening in the City of Graz. Maybe I'll find another utata:project=tw700.

Low Shoulders, Big Shoulders by MPnormaleye
At the start of the Great Depression, Foshay Tower was Minneapolis' tallest and boldest building, towering 447 feet over the street, bedecked in Art Deco patterns and a tapered effect designed to evoke the obelisk of the Washington Monument. Today, the Foshay has been reborn as the "W Minneapolis hotel, now surrounded by later arrivals along the downtown skyline. This shot, taken through the window of a Twin Cities Gray Line tour bus, shows only the ground level entrance, although the original tower still proclaims the word FOSHAY from all four sides of its summit.

Hi Utata!
After a long absence to flickr, I just rejoined and also joined this group today. I'm from Hamburg, Germany and am lucky to still be at holidays at the moment in Denmark! So my Thursday Walk was along the stony beach on Denmarks Røsnæs, on the Storebelt. It was a great hike!

As I said, I just rejoined flickr, mainly as a place to share some private albums with family and friends, but also to get to know some more people who love photography. Sadly, the social part of flickr seems to be almost dead. At least this group still has some life in it! :-)

I've been photographing this barn for so long I can't imagine it not being my subject for a regular Thursday walk. It felt like summer has come back again, so I strolled around and found some graffiti from 1908 chiselled into the corner stone. There is always something new if you just keep looking.

The sunflower field at the end of lane has lost all it's yellow. In some ways I think it's even more photogenic now. Took this returning from my walk.

Thursday Walk in Englewood Park 02
I haven't participated in Utata's Thursday Walk for a while, but today when I found myself on a walk in the neighborhood park, I thought, "I should take a picture for Utata." It wasn't until later in the evening that I read Flickr's blog and discovered this is the group's 700th consecutive Thursday Walk. And -- yes -- those are rain clouds, and yes I did get rained on walking home.

If you want to kiss a lady, take your hat off.

This shot from a Thursday stroll in my garden reminded me of a line spoken by Audrey Hepburn to Albert Finney in Two for the Road: "If you want to kiss a lady, take your hat off." I can't find whether it's exact or not.
