Iron Photographer 38

It'sGreg is a group administrator It'sGreg says:

Iron Photographer is always full of surprises. Always. This one, with these particular elements, could have been a disaster. Instead, it was an astonishing success. I think Iron Photographer 37 was the most surprising IP to date.

Rachel provided one of the earliest surprises with her gothic hand. Mark went beyond gothic, straight into Freddy Krueger preparing a healthy snack. Ron was torn between love and hate. And Bryce continued his IP hot streak by making us all wish we were injured.

I think we've got IP 37 wrapped up pretty tight. So we're free to turn our hands to the next Iron Photographer challenge. And here, ladies and gentleman, are the elements you've all been waiting for:

1 - one or more eggs
2 - white background
3 - portrait page orientation

The first part of the first element one or more eggs is perfectly simple. We will accept a solitary egg or several eggs. What do we mean by "egg"? For the purpose of this IP event, we understand an egg to be an ovum with or without its shell or outer layer, and with or without the internal membranes and nutrients for an embryo. We don't care what color it is. We don't care if it's from a chicken or a sparrow or a turtle or a velociraptor. All we care about is that it's a recognizable egg.

The second element is a white background. We don't care what the background is so long as it's some shade of white. We'll accept cream, ivory, beige, ecru...anything so long as it's whitish. We're once again applying Esther's Universal 83% Rule, which means the background should be at least 83% white.

The final element is portrait page orientation. In other words, not landscape format. Simple.

If you've got questions about this IP project, ask them here. If you have questions about Esther's 83% Rule, ask Esther. She's the troublemaker who made us invent the rule. You can, of course, always email your questions to me at editor@utata.org. I'll try my best to answer them, but I'm giving no guarantees.

Here is the standard Iron Photographer reminder: all IP photographs must be new images; do NOT pull photographs from your archives. The purpose of IP is to challenge you to create new art. We would also appreciate it if you would limit your IP submissions to no more than six photographs. We're delighted that you enjoy these projects, but we'd like to avoid having those folks who only submit one or two photos have their images lost in the crush.

Iron Photographer 38 will be published two weeks from today, on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 (and how weird is it to write 2008?).

Tag the photos in the following way: utata:project=ip38.

As always, you may include these optional tags: utata:color=black (which will provide a black frame around the image) and utata:description=hide (which, obviously, hides the description on the image). You can also include the description tags Brenda described in an earlier discussion thread.

Okay. I think it's time now for all the excruciating egg puns to begin. I'm so eggcited I may pee myself.

Monty (of Python fame) says: I have 2 questions

We welcome questions in the mystical realm of Iron Photographer.

1) How do you define background? Is everything background that is not egg or everything that is not an object? In other words: If my image consists of 25% Egg and 25% other objects that are not eggs, do the 50% white background count as long as these 50% are 83% white?

I'm sorry, I don't think I can answer this without a slide rule and the help of somebody who knows how to use a slide rule. My suggestion is as follows: just take the fucking picture.

2) Is that a stupid question?

No, no, of course not. We treat every question with respect and courtesy, and try to give a meaningful answer. Or else we just blow it off. It's hard to tell which is which, sometimes.

Seriously though, if YOU think it fits the criteria then it probably does. In the 23 years since the founding of Iron Photographer, there's only been two instances in which we've had to tell somebody that their photograph didn't fit. In each case, we subcontracted the lethal but cute pastel ninjas from the Countess of Maybe, and the offending parties were never heard from again.

Actually, even though I would never phrase it as he did, I think I know what MontyPython is talking about. As I was composing shots of eggs on my white stove with a white bowl or plate also on the surface, it crossed my mind that the *background* was not white. The *background* was my dark red kitchen wall. But of course, most of the image was white so I did as Greg so elegantly suggested, I just took the fucking picture.

I always learn something from Iron Photographer. This time I learned:

a.) Never carry an egg in your shirt pocket when preparing for a photo shoot, especially if you are highly distractible and have active kittens. (This should go without saying.)

b.) Read the directions. Cropping landscape to portrait orientation does not leave a lot of workable pixels.

Monty said, Greg: OK, I'll just take the fucking shot.

Excellent. Really, what's the worst that can happen?

But I also thought I would participate in the last IP and I didn't. Maybe I'm just too afraid that the photo will be bad and the work for nothing.

Okay, I'm going to say something serious here (which I rarely do in an IP thread). Iron Photographer is less about the final result than it is about the attempt. We've all of us taken bad IP photos. I've posted some bad ones, and I've taken some that were too bad to be posted. But I took them...that's the important thing.

I'm going to quote Samuel Beckett now. He once wrote, "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better."

And that's really what we're doing with the project. We're trying to get folks into the habit of artfully composing three arbitrary elements. You'll still fail on occasion, but your failures will get better and better.

They really do.

It's kinda like weight training for your creative intelligence. Back in college, in writing workshops, we used to get assignments that were similar in spirit, like: "Use only the following four (totally unrelated) lines of dialogue in a short-short story, and they're the only dialogue allowed. They have to be connected in a coherent way."

Just a fun "egg trick" to do if one is bored. If you take an egg and put it in a glass of vinegar and let it sit over night, the entire shell will disappear. If the egg is raw (not hard boiled) the raw egg will be enclosed inside the thin skin membrane that's usually inside. Try it, it's fun!

You can also soak an egg in vinegar long enough to soften the shell. Put a lit match in a bottle with a narrow (narrower than the egg) opening. Set the egg on the opening and when the match goes out the egg will be sucked into the bottle.
