Designed by Timothy Pflueger and built in 1939 as a transit hub, it originally was the hub for the Key System, Sacramento Northern, Muni, Market Street Railway, and Southern Pacific Railroad. Both Sacramento Northern and SP discontinued service in 1941, and the Key System ceased operations in April 1958. Eventually, it served as a bus hub for AC Transit, samTrans, Greyhound, Muni, WestCAT, and Golden Gate Transit.
Now outdated and underutilized, there is a plan to replace the current Transbay Terminal that would possibly include High-Speed Rail and a Caltrain extension. The Temporary Terminal needed for operations when the replacement is under construction is currently under construction at the lot bordered by Howard, Main, Beale, and Folsom.
