Please say hi and tell us a few words about yourself and your photography.

Hi, I'm Alexei from Southern California. I consider myself a beginner/intermediate photographer and feel that, at this point, I can appreciate other people's work better than I can create my own.

I find that I greatly enjoy photographs that tell a story of a time and place, whether in the past or present. I was particularly inspired by the scans being published by the US National Archives as part of the DOCUMERICA project. Some of the photos look unassuming, almost snapshot-like, yet they tell a compelling story 35 years later.

Therefore, I started this group. I hope to find like-minded photography enthusiasts who will join me in discovering images that will help me learn more about the world, its culture and history, as well as improve my own work.

Hello

Hello, Everyone. I'm Cynthia, and I'm from the City of New York. What said above and his description of what he wants this group to be is pretty much where I am right now and what I'd like to be doing with my photographs.

I'll show you my world if you show me yours.

oops, forgot to introduce myself...i'm Cathy from northern california, and consider myself an amateur photographer who gets lucky with a pic every now and then. i'm always up for an interesting group that will get me thinking about photography so that i can improve, and this group may just be one of them as i don't take a lot of documentary type pics, but will be on the look out now : )
Hi Cynthia and Alexei : )

Selfie from Feb 2009

Hi, I'm Peter a Brooklyn born nomad who, along with my wife and our menagerie, retired to the mountains of Central Panama back in 2006. I've been taking photos daily since joining MDPD Jan. 1,2009 and have not missed a day. Most of my stuff revolves around life here: from the beauty of the mountain rain-forest where I live to the gritty street life of Panama City and some of the rural towns in the interior.

Like everyone else here I think we are feeling our way along and establishing a group identity. I hope some of my photos meet the criteria of this group and look forward to the camaraderie of fellow photo enthusiasts.

Hiya. I'm Dee - originally from New Jersey, but have been living in England for more than forty years. Specifically, since April Fool's day 1969 when I came here for a vacation, and somehow never left. I'm a high school English teacher, who wishes she could retire, but can't just yet.

To quote from my profile: I'll photograph anything from buskers and the contents of bric-a-brac shops, to my grandchildren or strangers on the tube. Anything is up for grabs, but I tend to take more portraits than anything else. The human face. Can you ever get tired of it?

I think this is a great idea for a pool. Feel free to delete any of the shots I posted if you don't think they fit the bill. I know my 'faux hdr' processing sets some teeth on edge.

Hi there,
I´m from the little town of Reykjavík, Iceland and I am happy to join this group! I am a computer scientist and work in the software department of an Icelandic bank (!!! not the best place to be right now, an icelandic bank? hahahaha)

Anyways, I´ll do as Dee and quote my profile: I mostly (only) do "point and shoot" stuff. Love taking people-action shots, parties, events and (my) kids playing. Of course, city-scape and Icelandic landscape and nature is also a great inspiration - when I get out! Haha.
But mostly my photos are about capturing life - live moments in time on the spot "action" shots. Snapshots if you will :)

I think I can contribute to the "snapshotish" theme of the group, documenting life as I see it. .........if I have understood the theme of the group correctly! :) Looking forward seeing this group evolving and seeing what people come up with to fit the theme!

"Feel free to delete any of the shots I posted if you don't think they fit the bill." :)

Hi, I'm James
from the Ottawa Valley, Canada.
I've been shooting for about 2 years and have just recently made the leap backwards from digital to film - but i still shoot digital.
I do try to capture something of the moment whenever I take a picture, I'm sure a few of them will end up here.

for now my gear is

Nikon D300 (16-85 zoom, 80-200 zoom, 28mm prime)
Canon FTb (50mm prime, 300mm prime)
Seagull TLR
tripod, reflector, flash for D300

still getting the hang of shooting people - hope to improve there the most (and overall, of course)

fave film so far - Ektachrome VS

Hello,

My name is Rogdy. I am from Venezuela but I have been living in Paris for seven years now. I work as a Petroleum Engineer for a french company (no, not working for BP! :P).

I bought my first DSLR last year, but I started to take pictures more "seriously" like 4-5 months ago. I am still a completely noob trying to learn how to use my camera !!! I like to travel a lot and I mostly takes pictures in the streets, portraits, action shots, that kind of stuff.

My gear:
Body:
Canon Rebel T1i / 500D

Lenses:
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS (I use this like 95% of the time...)
EF 50mm f/1.8 II
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS

I take pictures as a hobby, but I discovered I really like it. Hope to learn to take better pictures getting destroyed in the icebox :)

See you around!

Salud, Rogdy. Good of you to drop by, you have some really outstanding work in your portfolio. Looking forward to more photo stories of the time & the place you inhabit. As an expatriate, you are in a position to offer a unique perspective of your new homeland.

Hi, I'm Paul. I work for a newspaper (words, not photos, though I did both for a while). Photography is one of my many hobbies, most of which for some reason seem to be awfully expensive. I like being able to capture moments and memories that will live forever. I take pictures for myself and my family, to remember where we've been, what we've done, who we were and are. I've been taking pictures for fun since the late 70s on disposable cameras, then Nikon film and finally digital when my daughter was born 5 years ago. I got frustrated by the limitations of point and shoot and I didn't want to spend my way through the whole Nikon DSLR lineup, so I went from a Canon point-and-shoot to the Nikon D700. I'm now fighting the laziness that digital cameras breed and trying to remember the good habits I learned shooting film.

I'm a third-generation native Southern Californian, which is something of a rarity. I have a considerable affinity for both halves of my state. When it's not on fire, it's a pretty nice place.
