Still rockin...

Hmmm...Thirtysomething is a tough crowd to get talking...

On the way to work this morning a Van Halen tune (Me Wise Magic) started playing on my iPod (in shuffle mode) and I thought it was a real blast from the past but is still an unreal tune/band (at least they would be if they were still playing). It seemed to me like a good discussion topic to get all you 30-ish folk reminiscing (everyone can appreciate music after all, assuming you're not deaf).

So, what's a band (or tune) that you used to love in your youth that still rocks (or swings or whatever genre we're talking about). I can name a bunch, but I'll start things rolling with:

Van Halen

Led Zeppelin. Pretty sad, isn't it?

Jimmy Page has mused that Led Zepplin might be doing the worldwide tour thing in the fall. Robert Plant is on tour at the moment with a collabaration with an alt country artist at the moment. LZ would be the tour of the century if they decide to do it.

Van Halen is classic with David Lee Roth, their classic song would have to be the old Martha and the Vandella's tune "Dancing in the Street."

As for the bands that still gets me back in touch of my youth is a two way tie, the Clash and the Jam.

Now if you are going to ask which songs from each band The Clash's Magnificent Seven (which has been covered by the Kokolo Afrobreat Orchestra) and the Jam's Town Called Malice.

I hear The Angels are still kicking around (I swear, that band has had more come-backs than a cheap pro...)

I read that. Frankly this frightens me.

I don't know. It's pretty early in the century. Do you think they'll be needing their canes and walkers on stage? They're getting pretty old.

Never heard of The Angels. Unless I have. Famous songs?

Maybe LZ will have a tribute band do the actual show and Led Zeppelin does a post show commentary on a Jumbotron or something. They are old enough to be our dads (save for the drummer).

The Angels are an Australian Rock band that's been kicking about for so long I doubt the members remember when they formed.
Big on the touring scene, but I don't think they've released an album in nearly 10 years. There's a BIO over here:
www.aussiebands.com.au/angels_beyond_salvation_bio.htm

I'm not sure how well known they were/are outside of Australia though, ah, in the US they were known as Angel City according to that link.

One of their best known tunes was "Am I Ever Going To See Your Face Again". It was a real sing along pub tune with the crowd following up with "No way, get f___ed, f___ off". Maybe it's just an Aussie thing. <shrug>

Another band that still does it for me (not that they have been together for years) is Cold Chisel. Another Aussie rock/pub band that made it pretty big worldwide (but I guess moreso in Australia).

Maybe it's just an Aussie thing.

Must be. I can't say any of that's familiar to me. But that might change if I heard the tune.

Unfortunately it wasn't on the Best Of... CD I have, and I can't find the LP with it on it to rip it from. :(

I definitely don't mind a bit of Chisel now and then, and some Australian Crawl too.

Am also partial to a bit of Icehouse and INXS.

And while we're on the subject of Aussie bands, a little Choirboys never goes astray - Run To Paradise what an awesome tune that was!

How about the Church? They're from Australia, are they still going?
David de Groot PRO 10 years ago
I don't think they're still going Bill, but definitely a damn fine band.

Pity, I love the song "under the Milkyway"

I'm a metal head but surprisingly a song that I remember rockin and still rockin today is Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics! The intro still gives me chills! haha.

Sweet Dreams is one of those songs that just does not date. There are other tunes from the 80s that sound totally cheesy now.
The Sage of Shadowdale 10 years ago
That's exactly what I'm talking about.

Example:
- Agadoo...hmmm
- Sweet Child o' Mine...ROCK ON!

I remember an old casette I had called Rock '83 obviously from 1983 so I was about 8 years old. It was probably put out by K-tel or somethin. Every song on that album rocks and would still get me bopping. If memory serves songs included Rock This Town, Abracadabra, Hungry Like a Wolf, Eye in the Sky, 867-5309 Jenny, or maybe that was Rock '84. Haha. Both were great!!

Oh, as for Aussie bands, obviously and still the best Aussie band going (are they still going??)....AC/DC.
