#113: Gouged

view profile

The current theme is Gouged. Freehand scratched or scrawled letters on or in any solid surface. (Although wet sand would probably fit.) Crudely carved letters. Lovers carving their initials or names into trees or benches, workers or home owners carving their names proudly into the wet cement of the new garage entrance ...

I changed the name from "Scrawled" to "Gouged" so as to rule out handwritten letters with pen/pencil/brush/marker.

[Agree with title change as scrawled is associated more with writing implements]

Wow, that was fast! I admit that problems with the terminology made me slow in suggesting or starting this theme.

I don't know if I have any letters in my entire collection for this one, but I always enjoy watching the rest of you go at it. :-)

Good to see tree bark letters, I don't think I have any.

Well, tree bark letters tend to get very distorted as the tree grows. I'm not totally sure that my D is a D. A pity I didnt do a macro of each letter in the BEST FRIENDS 4EVER that I have in my archives from the same tree, that D is less ambiguous.

G for Great, imho.
Closest I've come yet to having a suitable contribution, but it's in the pool already.

I by mag3737
More "poked" than "gouged", though, really. :-)

Nicely poked. Oh, I see: the macro alphabet.

Just added a J, but I have a better K. I'd be glad to remove the J if someone has one.

Eva the Weaver says:

Hmm, if someone else has a J then we could back up and leave me in a position to post an L. I thought L would have been easy (easily scratched). What really worries me is Q, as usual.

I found an excellent M. Will sacrifice the L if needed.

Just posted an M. Also willing to sacrifice it if needed - but unless more people jump in we're going to have to unravel several letters.

Monceau says:

The Q comes from hard dirt and a twig. I think it meets the criteria, but will gladly see it deleted and replaced by a more permanent Q from a tree someplace.

And I replaced my M: old birch letter instead of freshly shot beech

Welcome back! That T does look a bit on the professional side of what I had in mind for the theme, but let's keep it for the sake of variety.

Well how about this: After being skunked (as predicted) throughout this entire alphabet, I was out with some friends yesterday afternoon/evening, and spotted "LEGALIZE IT" scrawled in the concrete outside a marijuana cafe in Vancouver. I was quite pleased to find that our group was still stuck here on Z when I got up this morning. :-)
