Look here to see what kinds of letters you should start collecting for upcoming themes.

OK. I just hope we find an extra skinny i and dont get into problems counting colours. And of course I hope it wasn't premature to start the backwards alphabet ;-)

Will start sorting out my missing letters.

there's no doubt that some i's are thinner than others. we may just have to accept one that's relatively on the skinny side.

Someone's got to invite this A to start the multicolored alphabet:

those two look ok to me.

for "missing letters" i'd like to quantify what counts as "vast majority". i would like to see this be extreme, say 90-95% or more gone. but i could be talked into a smaller number if you think that is too excessive.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
So this P would have too much left:

P - Öppet

And the Y as well, I suppose. You're welcome to use letters from my set as examples of where you'd like to draw the limit.

Also, letters can go missin in many different ways, I have discovered while looking out for them - it depends on material, and it depends on whether it's worn out or intentionally removed. Fascinating to see the remains of old lettering beneath the signs of new businesses etc. :-)
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
For missing, I think we should allow neon or other lighted letters that aren't lit when all the surrounding ones are lit.

Missing P

cutesmallfuzzy: agreed about broken neon. same goes for places where letters have fallen off of a marquee. both of these types would obviously require some context (incl. part or all of nearby letters) to "prove" that the other letters are still there.

eva: i do think that red/yellow P is too-much there. however, this would still qualify for a slightly-less-deteriorated theme along the lines of "letters falling apart" or something. i think that idea has been suggested before. but for "missing", i think the focus really should be at the really-not-there end of the spectrum.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
"Letters falling apart" or "dilapidated"? Yeah, I think Eva's red/yellow P would be great for that theme.

I don't actually *have* any really dilapidated letters. I have a few sort of weatherworn ones, but I poked around the One Letter pool and there are dilapidated letters out there that put mine to shame.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Yes, Mag. I posted the red & yellow P as an example of not-missing. Actually it's a too clear example. This T might be OK, tho what do you say about the percentage?

T - KYRKBY TORGET

mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
i'd take it. this looks like a good place to set the limit. looks like around 80% or so, more or less.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Good. I can even agree about the percentage - why I say THAT is because I'm not very good at judging areas visually, not because I'm mindet to disagree.

we need to decide on upcoming themes. there are still plenty of good, unused ideas in the theme ideas thread...any votes?

Punctuated letters. A. B. C. D. E...

urbanmkr 10 years ago
How about a revisiting of macro letters? (i.e. the photo is larger than life)
admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
we should definitely do dilapidated, but is right now too soon after "missing", which included several dilapidated?

i'm gonna put macros, punctuation, and discrete objects up on the list pending agreement/approval from our co-mods.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Don't remember who originally suggested the punctuated letters - but I'm pretty sure it wasn't me - so come on, now!!
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
it was me. don't have any punctuated b's, tho! sorry.

at the rate we are going, if we want to do halloween colours in time for halloween, we should probably do it next, and save "discrete objects" for after that. any objections?
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
A couple of questions about Halloween colors:

1. Do the letter and background have to contain *only* orange and black, or can they include other colors?
2. Can we post a letter/background that has just orange or just black, but not both?
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I was thinking the same, bumping up the orange and black.

I'd definitely say yes to #2, not sure about #1. Have been looking hopefully at orange dumpsters that ought to have letters on them, OK, only they turned out to be white letters, not black. I don't think I'd like to include those. And definitely not orange&black plus the whole rainbow, or even half a rainbow - even if orange or black is the dominant colour. But I think we may have to allow, like black letters with a white border on an orange background - making up a combo here, but what I'm after is that maybe a bit of neutral other colour might be permissible. And I did find a couple of nice sources for pure orange&black today… Anyone else collecting already?

mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
i think the key is that there not be any distraction from the overall orange-and-blackness of the alphabet. it's fine to have only orange or only black as long as the rest of the photo is neutral. i'd be ok with small amounts of other hues as long as it is mitigated, e.g., if the tones are low in saturation, or if the photo itself is especially cool.
admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
and yes, i have some orange and black letters in my stock. :-)

"ok with small amounts of other hues as long as it is mitigated, e.g., if the tones are low in saturation, or if the photo itself is especially cool" - well put.

I agree with my co-admins!

while we continue to hunt for discrete-object letters, we should also ponder what's next. we don't have a next theme lined up, and we don't have very many unused theme ideas at all (i read some old threads). a while back we had suggestions of "left-leaning" and "right-leaning" letters. how about we do one of those next? i propose "left-leaning" and that we call it "bending over backwards".
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
sounds good to me
I expect we'll need to be precise about whether they can just be on an anti-clockwise angle or whether they actually have to be leaning when viewed 'straight on'!!!! ;-)

i'm always interested in how the eventual mosaic will look, which means i'd vote for having them all appear left-slanty in the actual photograph. but i'm also nothing if not agreeable to the democratic opinion.

Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Left-slanty is OK with me. Having little time and light for letter hunting, though.

mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
Grounded letters -- letters on the ground. Streets, sidewalks, floors, lawns, sports fields, ... The important thing is that the letter be "lying down" on some (more or less) horizontal surface.
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
yes, a good complement to the sky one we did a while back.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Where am I ever gonna find a left-slanting letter?? Might have to sit that one out.
admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
i had a quick look through the first half of your alphabet set, and found a left-slanty A, B, H, and J....
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
OK, open mouth, insert foot. Guess I better go and revisit my collection.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
I like Eli the Bearded's food alphabet suggestion. Then I might be able to use the T I didn't get to use for the interpreted alphabet.

T interpreted

(though for all I know it might have been poisonous)

Inspired by this rather cute photo,
Sophia and Letter B by dguild19

how about we do an alphabet of letters featuring humans? They don't have to make the letter, just be touching it in some way (draw a B on your belly!) Have we done that?
It would be easier than finishing my animal alphabet.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I suggest we do textiles next.

Soooo ... what's after the colors theme?

I got an idea. How about boring letters? Pick the dullest, most ordinary letters in your collection and post 'em up here in order. I have some really humdrum ones that I need to get rid of.

Edit: This would be challenging because most of us, I would think, only take photos of letters we consider boring if we're desperately seeking a rare letter like a Q or a K or something like that ... otherwise we just ignore the uninteresting ones ...

urbanmkr 9 years ago
I like that one!
