The current theme is Freestanding Letters: The letter in your photo must be standing (or hanging, or mounted) out in the open air, not drawn, carved, or otherwise affixed to the surface of something else.

Here's the way to think about it: Of course you took your photo from the front, but you COULD have gone around and taken a photo from the back side, if you had wanted.

(Letters on windows: Let's start out with "no" and see if we get stuck.)

Inspired by this beauty from Leo, which I will make into the group icon if flickr will behave itself:

these ones would count:

Now I understand. B is next.

mag3737, too bad you added the Z in the last alphabet; otherwise you could have posted the fabulous A in the logo.

mag3737 PRO 11 years ago
...only that A belongs to leo. :-) for me this is yet another theme that is going to be a treasure-hunt.

oh fiddlesticks! I've got the perfect B waiting on my hard drive back home! Never mind, its time will come!

seems like we need your B! but i have not had a chance to do any hunting myself yet, and i know i've seen lots of suitable letters around my neighborhood in the past.
Claudecf PRO 11 years ago
I thought of this B
but it's already in the pool
admin
mag3737 PRO 11 years ago
that one's a bit borderline for this, anyway, being mounted on a door(?) like that.
Monceau PRO 11 years ago
Perhaps we should re-think this alphabet? I have a V, but nothing else that will fit. I'm afraid this alphabet is going into the shadows...
admin
mag3737 PRO 11 years ago
ha, shadows. well, we are stuck on B all right, no doubt about that, but i think there are more suitable letters out there, once we get past this toughie. i want to give it a little more time, but could be swayed by a groundswell of opinion...
Leo Reynolds PRO Posted 11 years ago. Edited by Leo Reynolds (member) 11 years ago
I've added a B which is not ideal but could get us over this hump. A little bit of an explanation. All the other letters on the O R B I T E R fairground ride only had two rods holding them up so I think they would have fitted with no problem. Annoyingly the B was on a joint and therefore has other struts that hold up the lettering frame but makes the B looked very fixed and not very "freestanding"...but it could allow us to move...assuming someone has a Cc???

mag3737's comment: i suppose the vertical crossbar makes it less than perfect, but at this point we've been B-less for so long i'd say let's use it.
admin
mag3737 PRO 11 years ago
i'm mag3737, and i approve this comment. :-)
Monceau PRO 11 years ago
Two vertical crossbars. OK or no? I'll understand if it doesn't pass the "test" ;)
Leo Reynolds PRO Posted 11 years ago. Edited by Leo Reynolds (member) 11 years ago
Attached to one vertical bar with other vertical bars in view?

Perhaps the Theme should be "Letters on Bars"?
admin
mag3737 PRO 11 years ago
it does seem more and more like letters on bars. i was really hoping for more letters along the lines of the 'A' (from CALIFORNIA) posted at the top -- letters standing up on their own that you can walk around and admire from all directions. the current D takes us a little further away from that yet...

i dunno... should we switch it to letters on bars?
Monceau PRO 11 years ago
I think the bars make a very interesting, but still challenging, alphabet, mag3737. Which is another way of saying that a bar-ed alphabet is more possible than what you really want. At least in my regular haunts, I have never seen letters I could walk around. The A I posted was part of a cemetery gate, mostly luck in finding it.

What do others think?

well, now i have a quandary. we never really decided whether we were really doing "letters on bars" for certain:
I amsterdam
Monceau PRO 11 years ago
I agree, mag. Some creativity in naming this alphabet may help us through it. How about "largely freestanding alphabet"? Or "freebar alphabeth"? Just joking. I keep looking for possible letters, but in a downtown environment nothing is "free."
Leo Reynolds PRO 11 years ago
Another 5 days and it will be a month since this Theme was started. As we only have 8 letters should we call it a day and start a new Theme.
Claudecf PRO 11 years ago
I have looked and looked and not found anything that was attached to bars or freestanding...
admin
mag3737 PRO 11 years ago
ok...well, i added the I, but if popular opinion favours punting this doomed theme, that's all right with me. i'm actually on vacation through sunday and may not even check the group again before then. mkr, it's up to you to make the executive decision. (welcome back, btw. :-)

Thanks!
I'm kind of enjoying this slow steady one...
perhaps people could post the letters they have for later in the alphabet to this thread, and we'll see how we get on?
Maybe it could be its own group until we get a full set, and then we could transfer it in?

that's ok by me. i have several, but they're not on flickr yet, so they'll have to wait until i get back from vacation.

we could make a practice of having threads, instead of using the stream, for really hard themes (e.g. shadows). then when we have the whole alphabet in the thread, we can do the theme "normally" and it won't take long.
admin
urbanmkr 11 years ago
That's a good idea.
I'm not sure about my yellow t and u there, are they free enough?
So, what I could do is think of a new theme, delete the freestanding photos but invite them to this thread?
Can do so later today or this weekend...

Nice W! seems like we're almost there. We just need to do a little summary to see what we're missing and make sure there are no consecutive posters...

urbanmkr Posted 11 years ago. Edited by urbanmkr (admin) 11 years ago
I = mag3737
J = ???????????
K = Rootytootoot
L = urbanmkr, at a push... but why is Leo missing the L from California?
M = urbanmkr (could be a problem if I do the L)
N = ???????????
O = urbanmkr
P = ???????????
Q = duncan
R = ?????????? (don't think mine really counts)
S = urbanmkr
T, U = ???????????????
V = cutesmallfuzzy
W = Rootytootoot
Y = urbanmkr
Z = urbanmkr - consecutive problem!

so what do you think, should we go for it?
