Well I have a couple of ideas up my sleeve, but does anyone have any requests?

Lonely letters: good!
duncan PRO 10 years ago
some suggestions:
food
drink
very large letters
macro letters
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Big letters, macros and edible letters were all done last year, we could do a revisit to any of them. Drink must mean drink labels? And of course food has labels, too - but edible letters seemed to be such a lot of fun (that was before my time).

urbanmkr 10 years ago
I've just been thinking, lonely letters is awfully negative - just because they're by themselves, we can't assume they're lonely. We could call them solo letters!!!
;-D
I'm kidding of course, anyway I like the alliteration.
(comment inspired by some research going on at my uni into one-person households decided to call them 'solo households' for that reason, because it is not at all pejorative, whereas 'seul' or 'solitaire' has the 'lonely' connotations)

Thinking of solos, how about duos? We could do double letters again...

Drink ones could come not just from labels, but also liquid letters... making an O on a white plate with red wine perhaps?
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
We could also do a reverse alphabet, reverse letters and starting with Z.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
I thought lonely letters would take longer than it did. Let's do a more challenging one this time. Backwards letters (I take it this is what Eva means by reverse letters)? I also don't mind starting that one from Z going down.

Trying to think of themes we haven't yet done.

Someone suggested tall, skinny letters a while ago.

Z E

How about dilapidated letters? Letters that are showing their age, like these:

A N

Multicolored letters: The letter has to have more than one color in it

O C F

Do we have enough missing letters among us to do a missing alphabet?

G

or shadows?

R

Glass or on glass:

E M T

Punctuated letters:

T S
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I have lots of missing and dilapidated letters.

There's a discussion thread for backwards letters, but it's sunk very far down in the archives… Oh , wait!!
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
I've got a feeling the backwards letters theme will take a while. In the meantime, I'd like to make a suggestion - could the admins decide on the next three or four themes to go after it? This would allow us to start each theme immediately after the last one ends instead of waiting for a couple of days for the admins to work out what comes next.

Just a suggestion. :)

mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
i like the idea, and i like all of cutesmallfuzzy's recent theme suggestions (some of which have been kicked around before, i think). unless i hear violent objections from my fellow admins, i'll start a new "upcoming themes" thread that we can always refer to for future reference.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Yes do. Maybe it'll be easier to run the "advance organizr" as a separate thread.
cutesmallfuzzy Posted 10 years ago. Edited by cutesmallfuzzy (member) 10 years ago
Another suggestion: Letters made up of other discrete shapes, objects, or images:

M E A

or these by mag3737, Duncan, Leo Reynolds, and urbanmkr, respectively:

cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
I've also been on an interpreted letter kick lately. Think we could revisit that at some point as a theme?
admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
i bet we could do that. i've been seeing some interpreted letters springing up in your photostream like 'T'oadstools. ;-) (btw, i think your recent F might need a little cropping.)
cutesmallfuzzy Posted 10 years ago. Edited by cutesmallfuzzy (member) 10 years ago
Oh, the interpreted one, to get rid of the fence railings on the left side of the upright? I had cropped the picture so the F part of the fence was centered and a fair amount of context was visible, but maybe you're right. I may play around with it and upload a more closely cropped version.
cutesmallfuzzy Posted 10 years ago. Edited by cutesmallfuzzy (member) 10 years ago
Now, THAT would be really hard - an interpreted alphabet where all the letters are represented by objects that begin with that letter! H. A. Rey did it in Curious George Learns the Alphabet, but he was able to take some artistic license, as the letters were drawings, not photos.

Although I *do* have a Cookie, a Fence, and a Toadstool, I don't think I can do that for all the letters, especially Z and Q.
admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
i have an F: my little Feline anne's paws.

Zipper would be easy to arrange. i'll have to ponder Q...
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
We could do it if we allowed fabricated as well as found letters.
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
And also if we allowed several languages: I'll happily translate anything into French, which has many more things that begin with Q!
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Yes I think it would be hard to find a Queen willing to pose for the Q.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
So, we need to line up another couple of themes in the Upcoming thread.

My suggestion is we do the Glass letters after the Missing, cos it's time for a materials theme - and most easily-named material categories have already been done, some also revisited.

And perhaps after Glass, we could do Interpreted - withouth the ABC-book condition.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I think the ABC-book theme sounds great - but it could perhaps be done with all sorts of letters made from (or combined with) objects beginning with the letter in case. So it would combine traits from Interpreted - edible - iconic - signage etc. We just need a condition that you mustn't take photos from actual abc-books.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
If anyone likes quiche, that could be a Q if you include a serving utensil at the right angle.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
It's been a while since we've done a color theme. Perhaps we could do orange and black for Halloween? Or would that be too hard?
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
If we do it as orange&black or orange or black I think we could manage.
admin
mag3737 PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by mag3737 (admin) 10 years ago
I've put Halloween colours next up on the list, unless there are any objections from my co-admins.

Another future idea:

People/portraits: Each photo of a letter must include a person (posed or candid).
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
ah, that's what I just suggested in the upcoming themes thing. Great minds think alike, mag.
Eva the Weaver PRO 9 years ago
Haha! Was going to say I'll probably pass on that one ;-)
Eva the Weaver PRO 9 years ago
Some revisits we might make:

textiles
edible letters
transient letters

Not-yet-done neat idea: the ABC book (not from ABC books).

The last three may overlap too much to be done one after the other, we could pick one.

And I don't mind if we run the people letters, even if I don't participate much.
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
anyone care to define the ABC book idea? I'm afraid I haven't grasped it yet.
Eva the Weaver PRO 9 years ago
Letters made from objects/materials that begin with this letter, OR are combined with an object beginning with this letter. A made from apple peels or written into the skin of an apple - or with an apple on the side.

Scavenge ideas from ABC books, but don't use photos OF the ABC book.

Sounds like mostly a constructed-letters / arranged-photos theme rather than a found-items theme - or we'll have to flesh out the rules where to draw the line.
Timothy Valentine PRO 9 years ago
I noticed "car letters" in the summary. Have license plate letters been done?
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
any of these themes is fine by me!
Eva the Weaver PRO Posted 9 years ago. Edited by Eva the Weaver (member) 9 years ago
We also have suggestions for Very Large letters and macro letters - both will be revisits, I think.

And it was some time since we last had a colour theme.
cutesmallfuzzy Posted 9 years ago. Edited by cutesmallfuzzy (member) 9 years ago
Realized I should have posted the boring letters idea in this thread. D'oh!

Some more ideas ....

Decorative (as opposed to decoratED) letters: Letters whose shape is clearly meant to be decorative as well as representative of the letter. This criterion would leave a lot of room for interpretation but I think we could manage to keep it on track:

O G

Rustic letters. I don't have any of those but something along these lines:

www.flickr.com/photos/lwr/2049959576/sizes/t/in/pool-7334...

Maybe we can do handwritten letters (again?), with the restriction that the poster may not have written the letter himself or herself (don't want to make it too easy):

U

All lower-case again, specifying that for ambiguous letters like O there has to be some context to prove it's lower-case:

O

Another one with a lot of room for interpretation: minimalist letters, meaning letters that are very simple:

A I (that's an "I" not an "L")
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
Could do another found/interpreted letters theme.
I like the decorative letters theme.
It seems we've never done 'folk' aka 'outsider' aka 'artisanal' typography, i.e. non-official, undesigned letters. there's a whole group for it here
www.flickr.com/groups/folktype/
I wonder if it's what you mean by rustic, cutesmallfuzzy?
duncan PRO 9 years ago
How about a Helvetica theme? Might be tricky, I think I have one or two.
cutesmallfuzzy 9 years ago
I don't know that I can reliably differentiate Helvetica from Arial and other similar fonts.

By "rustic," I meant letters that were either photographed in the countryside or have some sort of countryside aura to them. I can't say I quite understand the criteria for "folktype."
Eva the Weaver PRO 9 years ago
We could perhaps do a sans-serif theme? But if we do it next, right after the boring theme, we'll have to find some absolutely non-boring samples.
admin
urbanmkr Posted 9 years ago. Edited by urbanmkr (admin) 9 years ago
Did we ever do Eva's suggestion of Letters made from objects/materials that begin with this letter?
The folk typography criteria basically means handmade, unique rather than using a predesigned font. So for instance
R by urbanmkr

C is for Café Rico by urbanmkr

So rustic = rural = countryside. I like that idea, too. Also the helvetica/sans serif theme, it will make me want to watch the documentary about Helvetica!
cutesmallfuzzy 9 years ago
Nudge to mods: New theme?
Eva the Weaver PRO 9 years ago
This long thread is getting a little unwieldy... but I'll bump it up in the list of topics anyway :-)
cutesmallfuzzy 9 years ago
Next please!

Hint: At some point, I'd like to see a revisit of e. e. cummings, all lower-case ...
Eva the Weaver PRO 9 years ago
Not a bad idea.
admin
mag3737 PRO 9 years ago
i don't necessarily want to get into a permanent rehash-rut, but how about concave letters (another repeat) as a followup to our recent convex?
Timothy Valentine PRO 9 years ago
Concave would be fun - I've just gotten a set of commemorative plates with letters "carved" in.
Curiosity question - could letters that are doubled (off-set) be considered "one" letter?
aa
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
I reckon so, but you might want to save some for our next double letter theme!!
admin
mag3737 PRO 9 years ago
this reminds me of another "probably too hard but i'd be interested to try it someday" theme i thought of recently: Multiplicity: each photo should have *three or more* copies of the target letter.
Monceau PRO 9 years ago
Have we ever tried an alphabet that combines three colors? For example, letters with backgrounds that include primary colors (red yellow blue) or some other combination. Could be challenging.

Another idea: those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are moving into Summer. Is there a summer theme we could do? Aqua/turquoise colors, letters with or among flowers, etc.

I scanned the list of alphabets that Eva the Weaver did (nice work!), but don't recall seeing an alphabet that includes a reflection with/in each letter. Has it been done? Do we want to do it?
Eva the Weaver PRO 9 years ago
Reflections, mosaic by mag3737 :
Letters with reflections

Done very early on, could very well be revisited.
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
I still want to re-do the animal theme!!!
Monceau PRO 9 years ago
Have we done a series of letters done in calligraphy? That could include old-fashioned calligraphic (like Old English letters) or more modern ones. Yes, they are handwritten, but it's the style that makes them different.

Could be challenging, particularly for X and Z.
TooFarNorth PRO 9 years ago
Since we just finished the "Between Letters" horizontal, is there a plan to do "Between Letters" vertical?
Timothy Valentine PRO 9 years ago
Have letters woven through things (i.e., fences) ever been done?
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
I like all those suggestions, hard as they sound!
Timothy Valentine PRO 9 years ago
Perhaps..
(having just visited a cemetery)
Letters from monuments or headstones?
A
TooFarNorth PRO 9 years ago
Also wondering about obscured letters ... you know, the ones behind a tree or a telephone pole.
cutesmallfuzzy Posted 9 years ago. Edited by cutesmallfuzzy (member) 9 years ago
How about letters photographed at an angle other than full-face-on? By this, I don't mean full-face-on letters that happen to be tilted to the right or left, like this one:

R

But letters actually photographed from the side, below, or above:

W D

(I know that many letters are in fact snapped from slightly below if they're on signs above eye level, but I'm thinking more about ones where the non-full-front angle is somewhat pronounced. My first example is better than the second)
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
Inspired by my partially obscured Z - partially obscurING letters, i.e. letters that block the view of something?
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
We could revisit edible letters.
admin
urbanmkr 9 years ago
Also, did we do mag's idea of
People/portraits: Each photo of a letter must include a person (posed or candid)
?
cutesmallfuzzy 9 years ago
Stenciled letters?

O J F
Eva the Weaver PRO 9 years ago
Hvae we really not had stencilled letters before? No, doesn't seem so. Then I think we've got us our next idea. Should be easy and nice.
cutesmallfuzzy 9 years ago
Very large letter revisit, perhaps?
Of course the only one I have is that W from the W hotel, but I could always go out shootin'.
Timothy Valentine PRO 9 years ago
I have a great big "Z" - Zeiterion Theater...
ovalspleen PRO 9 years ago
I have an idea for a theme after mosaics... how about ghost letters?
examples: signs that have had letters removed, graffiti sand blasted letters... etc.
Eva the Weaver PRO Posted 9 years ago. Edited by Eva the Weaver (member) 9 years ago
Missing letters

We had that one last summer
ovalspleen PRO 9 years ago
sorry i missed that one... great set!
