Everybody else: The top contributors are not allowed to play. Everybody else gets a theme-free free-for-all to give us a whole new view of an alphabet. We'd have to decide where to draw the cutoff line: Certainly exclude the top 5. Exclude our new admin Eva? Exclude other frequent contributors such as Rooty, MikeZ, duncan, csf, Xurble...? Go all the way and exclude anyone who has EVER contributed a letter to the pool?
Eva the Weaver PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by Eva the Weaver (member) 10 years ago
Excluding anyone who has ever posted before sounds as if it would take a very long time to fill an alphabet. Drawing the line will be difficult, too. My suggestion is to modify this idea into an alphabet where each contributor can post only one letter - so it'd be "one from each", rather than "everybody else".

Edit post hoc: it took more than six weeks to complete the democratic theme.
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
I like the one from each idea. Very democratic. One member, one post, as it were.

I'm afraid I don't understand your golf reference, mag3737!

We still have backwards letters and shadow letters in the works.

missing letters? Ghost letters? or do we want to wait till Halloween for the ghosts??!!!
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I've collected a lot of backwards letters by now. Not many missing until I can do a set of my own.

Wet letters would be a very timely theme for me ;-/

We should be able to fit in another colour theme before Valentine - but when I look at things, it might be time to have a theme by material - there have been suggestions of glass and chalk.

Glass (and other transparent materials) might be nice. I just bought a set of decorative gel letters to put on windows etc. Might be reasonable to exclude neon from the glass/transparent theme - and also other artificially lit signs. Or maybe too difficult then?

We still haven't done an animal alphabet, i.e. making letter shapes out of real live animals, including humans of course. See mag's cat's

admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
yeah but I'm sure you can get her to make another letter or two! I'll start working on Cleo...
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
I also like Eva's suggestion of a tall and skinny alphabet to go with the wide one. The problem is that REALLY tall, skinny letters - ones that are, say, three times as tall as they're wide - are awfully hard to come by. If the criterion is height >= 3x width, that would knock out all but five or six of my letters, most of them from the same sign.
admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
we didn't have a "proportion restriction" on the wide letters. i'm too much of a rule-nut usually, but i think this is best left to interpretation, with a statement like "the letter must be noticeably visually taller than normal -- whatever 'normal' is". to quantify it would (imho) mean making separate rules for upper- and lowercase letters, which would be cumbersome.
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
I like rules best when they're of thumb! :-)
now where's that cat?

If we could get laihiu to join the group this could be the O:

you guys are so fun!
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
OK, but seriously. Do you think it could be time for a colour theme? There's a colour cartel group for jade, emerald, turquoise, teal - that stretch of the colour circle where people have so many disagreements about what is blue and what is green. Could be the letter, could be the background, could be with other colours, but preferably the bluey-greeney delight would be dominant. Or?
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Sure, I could go for an ambiguous blue/green theme.
admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
sure. make sure you word it so that we end up squarely in that "gray" area in between blue and green. we don't want no chartreuse in this one!
aristide Posted 10 years ago. Edited by aristide (member) 10 years ago
i prefer pure blue letters and the background could change :-)
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Well, we're coming up to the end of the bluey-greeny alphabet. How about that Valentine's Day theme next - nothing but red, pink, and white?
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Yes, I was thinking the same. Won't be time for another theme in between, even if it may be a bit unorthodox… well, I see that there has been two colour themes in a row a few times before.
aristide Posted 10 years ago. Edited by aristide (member) 10 years ago
i was looking for a bluey-greeney Z all over vienna in the last days and couldn't find one but i came across this wonderful A book and an idea came to my mind: why not find letters going with one (or more) icons like the book and the owl in this case?
Monceau PRO 10 years ago
And for a future alphabet, what about white-on-white or any other color? Claude's teal T in the current alphabet is an example. And I just found a bunch of white handkerchiefs with white embroidered letters.

I like cutesmallfuzzy's suggestion about Valentine-related color letters next.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
This is not quite the same as Aristide's suggestion, but I have been collecting a whole A to Z (with additional Å and Ö, still looking for an Ä) of letters which are themselves iconic/pictorial:

L - Liten

I think we have decided on Valentines = red-white next.
And after that we'll need a non-colour theme=a material-based or shape-based or idea-based theme or… (we have a small store of suggestions in this thread, but more are always welcome).

I like the white-on-white, or monochrome suggestion, too. For next colour slot, perhaps.

i like all these recent ideas. eva, if you start up the VD theme, don't forget pink.

i have a subcollection of monochromatic squircles.

Green for St. Patrick's Day?

I know green has been done before, but ...
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I have been thinking of an eatery alphabet - letters from chalked menus, signs etc. - because I think that would be easy to fill.

Green - I'm not sure. Green has already been had twice: once generally green, once green backgrounds.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
How about green, white, and orange, then, the colors of the Irish national flag?
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
Apparently, March 21 is World Poetry Day (UNESCO says so according to Wikipedia). Perhaps we could have a poetic alphabet: each letter should have a poetic title or legend, repeated in the discussion thread. A 26 line poem.

What about pastels for spring?
aristide Posted 10 years ago. Edited by aristide (member) 10 years ago
what about black and white only or has this already been done?
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Black and white has been done as a checkerboard

Spring colours have been done as Spring Explosion: "The current theme is SPRING RIOT letters. It's a colour theme. We want letters in springlike colours: pink, yellow, green (especially spring green, of course), and turquoise/pale blue. To symbolize the explosion of riotous life that happens in spring, the colours (not the letters, the colours!) can be in any order. Blossoms away!"

Both themes done long before my time in the group.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Actually, I think it might be a good idea to repeat select themes once in a while as we have had many new people join lately and they would not have had a chance to participate in those themes when we did them in the past. Also, I'd like another crack at a few themes myself ... interpreted letters, tenuous links, and edible, to name just a few. Thoughts?
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
And the materials - wood, stone and metal.

But I think this is up to the original admins to decide.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Plus I think the poetry idea is a good one, and should be easy. In terms of the photos it would be an(other) opportunity for posting your best letter shots. Then the poetry could be most any snippet of vaguely poetic text - I think most of us would get inspired from our photo - some might find rhymes coming easiest to mind, I suspect I may be inclined to broody, unrhymed musings on rust and decay ;-)
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
(presidential voice) "As founder of this group..." ;-) I'm quite happy to repeat themes. I agree with cutesmallfuzzy that it would be fun to have another crack at them. Maybe we could set a year as the shortest interval between repeats?
The less visually-based themes, e.g. interpreted letters, would be particularly different from each other anyway.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Year interval sounds good to me ...
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
SO I looked at the summary and it seems we haven't done 3D concave, i.e. carved-out/imprinted letters e.g.

A B

'negative space' wasn't quite the same thing.

How about it, folks?
aristide 10 years ago
hm, i would prefer a severe one, like black and white or white on black or black on white or black on black or white on white.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I think carved-out & imprinted sounds fine for the next theme.

An then after that it might be time for another colour theme; and that COULD be a repeat of a one-year-plus-old theme.

urbanmkr 10 years ago
white on white would be easy for me with all the snow still in Montréal!!!
aristide 10 years ago
*lol* here it is snowing also from time to time, but seems more like april weather because the sun comes out in between and then it is hot.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
No objection to carved-out.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
I also shot a whole bunch of missing letters the other day. :)
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
This reminds me of a very cool J ratsal_adsand has. It's hard to tell if it's incised or raised - you can stare at it and make it go back and forth.

Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Well, should we do black and/or white next?

I dont think it'll jinx the carved-out theme if we decide on the next theme a little bit early - and it would give people a chance to start collecting before us regulars have filled in haf the slots already.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
I think it's a good idea to announce the themes in advance.
aristide 10 years ago
i enjoy the speed of your present alphabet though i have only convex letters as fas as i see....and yes, i would be very fond of the black and white theme :-)
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
black and white fine with me - in whatever combination you decide is best. And I agree with Eva that we could also announce the one after it.

NB We have the 'shadows' and the 'backwards letters' threads on the go for a future date, but there aren't many letters in them yet.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
So then we'll do black and/or white next.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
And after that perhaps one of the earliest material-themes, wood or metal. Anyone got preferences?
Rootytootoot PRO 10 years ago
do we have striped? spotted? speckled?
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
We did seeing spots last autumn, so spotted has been covered.
Eva has done a very useful summary thread for everything that has been done already, if you're wondering.

I like both suggestions of striped and speckled
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
We did stripes as late as some time in November. One of my first themes (or THE first).

How's about an Alphabet in a Day. All 26 letters must be posted in 24 hours. If not, the alphabet is reset. As a trial any sort of letter.

If successful, other "Alphabet in a Day"s could be slotted in now and again with different themes.

would probably be a good one for a weekend.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Well I started it. It's fun, but very non-democratic.
I have put up an announcement for the next theme, already, going back to the earliest materials themes, to give everyone a chance on them.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Whatever happened to the iconic letters idea? That'd be a nice challenging one to do after the metal theme.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Yes, sounds good. We can line up the iconic theme after the metals.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
The iconic theme is going to take some time yet. But how a bout a colour them next? I have been thinking of "wasp colours" - black and yellow.
aristide Posted 10 years ago. Edited by aristide (member) 10 years ago

here's an idea that would make an awesome alphabet mosaic: On Black. letter must have a deep, dark, really black background. maybe mostly will be neon letters, which is fine, but maybe we'll get some other good ones. (e.g. here's a nice A from duncan.
duncan PRO 10 years ago
how about a car/auto logos theme? I've often thought a trip to a carpark or junkyard would provide a lot of good letters, and I've already got two As, and a B, T and V.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
I like both those ideas! Would we exclude license-plate letters from the car theme to make things more interesting? (I mean, restrict the letters to those on the vehicles themselves, not on the license plates.)
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
@mag: We could also, simply, do a revisit to neon.
@aristide: I'd immediately get into difficulties with colours that aren't "flat" - how many colours would a shaded letter count as…
@duncan: nice idea. I noticed when we did the metal theme, that I could probably have filled an alphabet of metal letters, hunting car brands (on objects standing still, thank you). So yes, CSF, I think we would exclude licence plates - I also wasn't thinking of printed logos on company cars (some of my iconic ones come from that source). But I understood this as from the brands of cars… and, all in all, it may be a little soon after the metal theme. We could do it in a while.

@CSF: yes, we have talked about monochromatic. Since it's about time for another colour theme, and since nobody else seems keen on the wasp colours right now, I'm thinking we could do monochromatic next.
aristide Posted 10 years ago. Edited by aristide (member) 10 years ago
why, eva? a shadow is no colour and does not count ;-) and the idea of monochramatic letters is excellent!
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I didn't mean shade as in shadow. I meant shades as when yellow blends into orange or hot pink blends into cool pink or red. More or less continuous.
admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
i'm a big fan of neon and would certainly love to do it again sometime. but that would also invite letters whose background was not black, and i'm separately keen on "on black".

i wouldn't mind seeing yellow and black the next time we are feeling colourful.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
And I'm minded to do the monochromatic theme next - let's see whether that turns out colourful or muted.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
What now?

admin
mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
cars was a nifty theme. kudos to duncan for the suggestion.

i'm extremely pleased that i could swoop in with a squared circle to finish it off. i spotted that Z on my way home tonight, and rushed in the door and straight to my computer to post it, without getting the (snail) mail or even feeding the cats. (worry not, they were fed immediately after that. :-)

what's next? i assume urbanmkr is kidding about the bikes. ;-)
admin
urbanmkr Posted 10 years ago. Edited by urbanmkr (admin) 10 years ago
I wasn't kidding about the bikes!!! maybe not for the next alphabet, but for one later this summer. There are loads of cool letters on bicycles out there! I've got more of them than car ones.

It would be nice to revisit reflections.
And I still want to do the human/animal alphabet. My cat has provided some Xs so far (paws crossed) but we're working on the rest. She doesn't much like having her photo taken.

how about we do the "you can have any colour so long as its background is black" idea next?
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Yes, I'm putting up the blackground theme now.

Mag3737 will be the appointed judge of what is a Really, Really BLACK background.

We could perhaps do te people-animals next. I will hardly have any animals, but people-letters should be produce-able.
admin
mag3737 PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by mag3737 (admin) 10 years ago
these on-black letters are really looking good. it makes me want to try an "on white" sometime, with backgrounds as white as possible.

another thing we have not done in a long time is a checkerboard -- the last one was 28 themes ago, "silver/gold", although i particularly like the backgroundy ones, and the last one of THOSE was 32 themes ago, "orange/blue".

but since we're on the black backgrounds this time around, i think we should focus on something in the foreground for the next one...
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
We could go back to the roots, and do wood.
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
So I started wood. A revisit to reflections would be nice, I agree - let's do it soon. However, I've been thinking of a colour theme that combines the spring colours with the checkerboard idea: every other letter green on any (bright) background and every other letter any bright colour on a green background… and that should be done before mid-summer.
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
I still want to do animal (including human animal) letters... :-)
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I have seen hardly any green since I suggested a spring checkerboard, so I don't know…

But I've got a whole, uploaded, set for a reverse alphabet - and I think I've got a full set of ghost letters as well (which is not uploaded yet).
aristide 10 years ago
suggestions for the next theme: because it is summer - swimmingpool letters, letters from bathing places, letters from ships and boats....they should have some relation with water.
admin
urbanmkr 10 years ago
Nice suggestion, aristide. Nice and tricky.

Apologies for the immobility of the alive alive oh alphabet - I kept intending to get my friends to make letters, and then not getting round to it. But I'll be working on it. Would be nice if others did too! But it clearly didn't grab anyone much...
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
Well my flamingo S is better than the flamingo K… that's all I say.

The "relation to water" should not be so difficult to fill an alphabet with - the tricky thing is how do you see in a single-letter shot that it is from a ship, not from an old pub, from a swimming pool rather than from a storefront with mosaic… etc, etc. It would be OK with me as long as those connections are explained in the description text. Any other opinions?
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Related to water with a note in the description if necessary sounds good.

We'll just have to rely on the honor system. And I think that very tenuous connections to water should be OK, too, not just the obvious ones.
aristide Posted 10 years ago. Edited by aristide (member) 10 years ago
it would be perfect if the light is reflected from the water to the letter but as this is not so easy i suggest to take also an environmental shot as proof, just like this one:

exemplary

@urbanmkr: my cats just didn't want to make letters and i cannot force them so i let it be.
cutesmallfuzzy 10 years ago
Here's an idea for a challenging theme: single letters. I mean letters that aren't part of an actual word or sentence in real life - just letters sitting on their own, like this:

B

or Eva's J in the water alphabet

We could even ask that the picture include some of the surrounding context as evidence that the letter was found as a single letter.

mag3737 PRO 10 years ago
i'm for it, too, obviously. let's call them "lonely letters" or "isolated letters".
Eva the Weaver PRO 10 years ago
I think "lonely letters" is good - since I think we want to do this with found letters, rather than bought ones, like my alphabet cookies or self-made ones, like those wonderful edible letters.
