OK, here it is: www.blurb.com/bookstore/invited/3063273/c241a45e7c1c3c454...

Head over. Take a look. Tomorrow night-- let's say 8 PM EST-- I'll lower the price and Jordy will order his hard copy. I do not expect there will be any further updates. Once Jordy reviews the hard copy proof, we will make the book available to order. That will either be Proof 2 or I'll make one final revision.

Ladies and gentleman. It's in the can.

Jake, I wanted to thank you for all the hard work, time, and MONEY you've poured into this project. Really, this was no small feat, and I just wanted to give a public thanks to you for your undying drive to help others.

You're pretty awesome.

If I haven't noted before, this book was a LOT more work. Not just on my end, but by all the proofreaders and people pesterers and editors and layout gurus. The combination of massive collaboration in the writing of 40+ essays made for a challenging project.

I think it's all worth it in the end.

Also, someone needs to remind me to do a "lessons learned" post about The Icebox books.

The #1 lesson is there need to be clear instructions to all participants upfront, with clear deadlines, and remorseless removal from the project for the failure to meet those deadlines.

And the deadlines & guidelines can't be arbitrary, otherwise they'll be ignored. Book I got moving at the end because we had a clear date final.

Ambiguous guidelines for photo submissions, unknown need for aspect ratios, confusion on what the final essays were supposed to look like and the need for collaboration at every step are just some of the problems that led to long delays at every step.

I know we already have a publisher for Book III, and I will gladly share more of what I've learned if anyone else is contemplating one of these projects.

Lesson # 2:

Picture selection. Whoever becomes editor and chief should have the authority to choose participant photos that have made it to the Fridge. In this go round, largely due to timing, people had pictures not submitted to the Icebox II group that I would have preferred to use -- pictures that made the fridge long after everyone had forgotten about the project.

But even without timing, an editor should have control over the look of the book, and the most important part of that is picture selection.

My suggestion would be you raise your hand and say I am in, permit downloads of all your fridged photos (and don't delude yourself that people are stealing your carp), and then.

The editor does the rest.

Oh .... and I do not want to be the editor.

But, you know. Call me if you must.

I don't know if I'd go as far as Jordy. But I do think there are better ways to go about photo selection. To date, there was no photo theme for the book. Not that there has to be. But the submission guidelines and design didn't really allow it. Jordy's concept, it really becomes the editor's book. Which is certainly a possibility, and reduces greatly the need to herd cats. But that's neither here nor there.

More than anything, the plan has to be developed up front, and clear direction provided. It's so easy to sign up for a project when the only requirements are submit some photos & write an essay. When it became clear how much work that would be on the backend, it was too late in the process to turn it back around and say "you must 2 photos with each of the following aspect ratios, and write a 200-300 word essay." And pre-assigned roles to other primary contributors and assistants.

My other advice: we're photographers, not writers. Expecting great essays from 41 writers in a timely fashion turned out to be too much of an ask. I don't know if we could've figured that out ahead of time, it's a lesson that we had to learn firsthand.

Sounds like the delays were generally because if the initial concept. What fuckwad came up with it?

The concept played a role. But we all voted on it so we all share in the blame.

Bravo all, but you are going to have to work on the pricing.

Heh. The pricing is absurd because we're still proofing. Lowering it now, but I recommend not ordering it. We'll launch after Jordy reviews his copy.

Oh, and the 7" softcover is uploading as I speak. Going to order a hard copy to check on how it prints. Both should be reviewed by 12/1 & we can launch then. Perfect timing for Christmas, Hanukkah & other winter festivities.
