Is that the reaction that guy had when he found out he was fired and could FINALLY leave the Baby Boys franchise? I'd hate to be stuck there.

(The Texans played their very first game- ever- on September 8, 2002. We beat the Baby Boys 19-10 in an "upset". I've been celebrating the 10th anniversary.)

Can we get a reminder when voting is open? Anyone is free to start a thread. Cubes are about 30% of the voters, and I often forget once I'm bounced.

Just a thread, with bumps every 3 days as voting begins.

Have to say, no matter the outcome, I was happy with this Buick.

You might not know I had to get graffiti, logos and a light fixture out of this picture.
I was torn about whether to get the litter out from under the R wheel.
I left it because I thought the image looked too sanitized without it.

I owe my Grandson prints of some of my Shelbys.

I am getting destroyed by Queenie. When I was posting my shot I thought "I hope I'm not against that one"... and bam! Great shot, deserving of going to the R2.

By the way, are the pairing really blind? Amazing the number of pairings that are quite similar in this game. Minimalism vs minimalism, cat vs dog, portrait vs portrait, smoker vs smoker, man holding a baby vs man holding a baby, landscape vs landscape, etc

I noticed the same thing....pretty funny. Also, luck of the draw has several great photos against other equally great photos (like in your case!).....unfortunately, several people will be eliminated who shouldn't be.

Look at the morgispop(Don) vs Baz 120 match up.

Darren LoPrinzi: I actually don't find it funny... I already don't like much the "blind" system, because it removes all strategy from the game. I definitely would like it even less if I learn that the matchups are not random.
MOD

espinozr: What's the other format option if it wasn't blind? Do you mean like they set up your match up so you see who you're up against, and then you post your photo?

Darren LoPrinzi: Previously, you knew your opponent before posting. You could also see the whole draw, so you knew who were your potential opponents for the following rounds.

I think one of the biggest problems with the preset brackets was the no show problem.

Another question: are the finals going to be round robin of the last 3-4, or is it going to be standard knock out set up?
Queenie-v PRO 3 years ago
espinozr:

Thanks! I'm surprised at the vote so far, as my first thought was "Oh, no, out in R1 again." My understanding is that the pairings are completely random, although in the past several games, that damn randomizer kept pairing me up with Cyn, who kept beating me.
I think the main advantage of the blind posting is that the game can start with any number of players, so they can set a firm schedule.
chloe & ivan PRO 3 years ago
Thing is, I see some pretty interesting pairings, found myself thinking that couldn't be random.
But I don't know.

chloe & ivan PRO 3 years ago
I try to click thru each one.
Some rounds it is not possible.
Sometimes the only way to decide is to look at the images really large.
Then sometimes your winner does not hold up.
Yes, the first rounds take a long time.
CollardGreens PRO 3 years ago
I didn't know this thread was up and running or I would have posted earlier. There are certain truths to playing F64. Here are a few:

1 - The random number generator does indeed set EVERY matchup. The sequence for R1 is run PRIOR to any signup sheet being posted. The random number generator uses a random event and 64 numbers are spit out in an unordered sequence and assigned to each signup position ...this event is run 7 times if the posting day (for the signup thread) is an even date and 9 times if the posting day for the signup thread is an odd date. The random action event is repeated ONE time for each subsequent round and matches are set. This is a truth.

2 - Signup order and random numbers are paired - then another event occurs where the random numbers are ordered either in ascending order or descending order (at the flip of a real coin)...from here the matches are set. This is a truth.

3 - There are no-shows...so the order for pairing is pushed up to fill in the vacancies and the vacancy holes are slid to the bottom (we also note who is a no-show btw). The game tool takes care of text for the matches and photo html is automatically posted into match text...URLs are reserved for play and matches are populated when midnight at the international date line is reached (we could not get people to understand time zones so we had to make it simple...post by midnight in your time zone on posting day). This is a truth.

4 - Flickr does not allow for group Fmailing so in the past the reminders were sent one at a time and that was VERY painful. So my clever self set about to create a way to autoMAIL participants reminders. The text has to be generated ONE time and the button has to be pressed ONE time for every reminder that is sent...and every so often flickr comments that there is an undue amount of fmail being sent from a single account and I have to explain the need etc etc. SO - each reminder has to be set to action by an actual human - This is a truth.

5 - We all liked the bracketed "know in advance who your opponent would be so you can sandbag for later rounds" method. We could go back to that method IF IF IF there were 64 signups AND AND AND several alternates for the ever existing no-show problem. Signups are off because we are better technical admins than marketing admins...so. We use the current blinded method and any number of people can play. The current blinded method also prompts you to put up your best shot every time...sometimes good photos are matched against good photos and bad against bad. This is a truth.

6 - flickr NOW regionally caches your photo. Meaning that on occasion there are hiccups at YOUR local flickr server and certain photos come up with viewing issues from time to time. Also IF a player changes a photo and uploads new - it breaks the html and someone (admin) has to sort that out...write a fmail and explain why it is an ethical issue to change a photo after posting etc. etc. This is a truth.

7 - Semi-Finals will continue to be round robin as this is the best way to take 4 and make 2 worthy opponents.

8 - Myself and a small number of reliable admins (VERY small) run this game with precision, fairness, and no small amount of clever repartée...ALL done with the foremost premise of HONESTY and FAIRNESS in play as a priority. This is a bloody fucking truth and fuckety fuck fuck anyone who says otherwise. This is a truth (more calmly this time).

We try - sometimes we fail - but we do sincerely try to produce a consistent game quality given the field we play on. We will continue to try until - well until we don't feel it is fun any longer. It IS fun now. Come and play if you like. Vote if you like (but do it honestly and vote in all the matches - easier now with the JUMP TO NEXT function cleverly installed).

These are truths. End of line.
CollardGreens PRO 3 years ago
Oh - if you use the scripted and installed voting buttons...your vote is easy to place and accurate.. AND the script only allows ONE vote per thread for you. Thanks to Josh Wolf for these.

If you are using the beta new group experience, you can return to the old version temporarily, where you will find the voting buttons still exist, and then flip back to the beta when you are done. I have done this for the last game, and for this game. Using the voting buttons, and the link to the next match makes voting on 64 photos much less onerous.

Thanks for the excellent platform Ted, young/old, experienced/noons - we all flock to f64 much like moths to a flame - knowing all too well that we are probably going to be consumed/crushed/plastered....but also knowing that out of this creative turmoil a few rise much like phoenixes & the beauty is in that glory being short lived as one out performs the other each time with the rest striving for the same recognition :)
Sometimes you think you are matched against a 'fail safe' entry and soon discover that the votes speak otherwise thus making you change your perception of photography as an effort, a result, a concept or an art form. That way both icebox & f 64 help as sharpening stones - just that we sometimes need to be receptive :) Great stuff!

Darren LoPrinzi PRO 3 years ago
As I mentioned elsewhere, I have a hard time deciding what others would consider "my best" photos.....and after seeing the early entries in round 2, I would venture to say many people have that same problem. So far, more than half the entries in round 2 are significantly stronger shots the same player's first round shot. Of course, just my opinion.

*Under the assumption that everyone is playing their "best" shot first.

Darren LoPrinzi:

I usually don't go with my best in the first round. But it's a dangerous game-- my #1 photo might beat Rogdy's #6 entry on a good day, but his #1 would crush my 6th best shot 99 times out of 100.
chloe & ivan PRO 3 years ago

Queenie-v PRO 3 years ago
I have to play my best shot each round, to stand any chance of making it to the next round. Also, I play early, in case of a tie. I am surprised to still be in it, especially when I saw I was up against Rogdy's landscape.

I would think that strategy would only work if one was confident that ALL their top 6 photos were better than any other player's entire photo collection. Otherwise, they are playing against the odds.

On voting for oneself. We assume each player is voting for themselves automatically. The count starts at 1:1 so the votes are offsetting and don't matter in any case. In the event someone does actually vote for themselves then it is a double vote as per our initial assumption and we remove the extra. Moot.
