Group DescriptionThis group is for those who like to meet strangers anywhere, anytime and make consensual portraits to celebrate the life stories, record the beauty of the Human Family and share these encounters with others.
The Human Family Project and the act of making stranger portraits serves 2 purposes;
Firstly, it helps us to overcome our fears that prevent us from knowing the people that surround us. Breaking down the social barriers improves our confidence and ability to genuinely connect with others in a meaningful way.
Secondly, over time, it helps us improve the photographic skills that are needed to make beautiful portraits of strangers and show our subjects in the best possible way, through OUR eyes.
We recommend that if you are new to stranger portraiture you set yourself a challenge of taking 50 portraits of 50 people you don't know. You may well want to continue on from 50, as many of us have already done, and you are most welcome to continue to post in this group, but once you get to 50 setting yourself some new challenges is encouraged.
The expectation is that members will share their journeys through the portraits made, coupled with the accompanying commentary explaining the circumstances of the encounter. Ideally this would include introducing the stranger, what it was about them that you found interesting and any other details relevant to the encounter. We encourage you to genuinely engage with your stranger to find out who they are, where are they going in life, what is THEIR story? You will be surprised what people are prepared to tell you when you are interested.
We also encourage you to be interactive and share what you have learned through each encounter. This not only helps to teach and inspire others who are just starting out, but aligns you with the premise of the group, which is to demonstrate good will to all of humanity. Be willing to give and receive constructive feedback to support and challenge your fellow group members. Being generous with comments about posted photos is greatly appreciated and valued which in turn promotes growth and a sense of community within the group.
So whether you are a beginner wanting help along the way by a caring community of like-minded photographers, or a seasoned veteran looking for a place to share your human encounters, then this is the place for you.
