SHIPtember
One Month.
One SHIP.
One Hundred (plus) studs.
Rules: Build SHIP must be 100 studs or longer between September 1st and October 1st. That's it!
How do I enter? Simple! Start building your SHIP starting on Sept 1st, and start posting WIP shots as you go so everyone can all praise your guts for building a SHIP in a month!
Work in progress (WIP) shots should be posted here (this thread)
And your final glory shots should be posted in the LEGO SHIP group:
New Pre-SHIPtember Rule! - Start now!
Since a good portion of people are going off to school in September, you can start NOW, as long as you start posting in the WIP thread (this thread) you have one month (till September 1st) to finish.
What about [insert standard ship critiera]? We don't care, as long as it's a 100+ studs and you build it all in SHIPtember we'll be happy...
Though there will be Trophies for people that build a really good SHIP... ;)
Trophies?!?! Yup. Trophies. The most significant one yet.
Engraved/Printed Badges!?!?. Yup, we got those covered too. What's a trophy without a nice engraved brick? And we got some extras for SHIP Builders.
FAQ:
What is a SHIP? a S.H.I.P. is a Seriously Huge Investment in Parts and is at minimum 100 studs in length. Alternatively it has also been dubbed a S.eriously H.uge I.nvestement in T.ime...
What scale should the SHIP be? Any scale you want, Minifig, Micro, Frog, Chicken, whatever floats your SHIP - as long as it's 100+ studs.
Does it have to be space-ship
Yes.

I'm calling the frame done. I'll finally have some modularity, since I'm applying to a convention, and want it to be easily transportable.
I won't have easy access to my Lego between now and November. This will make things interesting.

I think I am finally ready to tackle the challenge that is SHIPtember. Thanks for doing this again Simon!

I started building what was supposed to be a practice SHIP at the end of June. I got about a week into it, life happened, and I probably won't be able to touch it for another few weeks or so.
Here's where I am so far, and will remain until about the 25th of this month. If I can finish it by September 1st ( I can ) will you allow it?

Is it wrong that I look forward to SHIPtember more than Christmas? Three more weeks!!! Yippee!
As for my SHIP design this year, if I had money I would love to build this:

Although .Tromas did give me the idea of doing something like this:

But in the end it'll probably end up looking like last year's SHIP:

Just curious, it wouldn't be a problem to do one SHIP in August, and then one in September, would it? Just so long as they were both, or either, done in a month?

Most people don't do that, but I'm sure it's fine. The rest of us envy your amount of spare time.

I have begun work on my SHIP. It is going to be realistic and will be part of my military faction known as the IRT. It is based off of lifting body vehicles and most importantly the space shuttle, with one major difference. It is a "space bomber". It accomplishes its bombing mission by dropping guided tungsten rods from LEO. They impact the ground at Mach 10 and have a yield of a tactical nuke. However since it is from kinetic energy alone there isn't any radiation as with a nuke. My SHIP will also be able to launch small spy satellites.
Here are some WIP pictures:

Just make sure it's 1M elapsed. ... i'll take your word for it...
The frame is never done, I find I always have to tweak them :P
You're Nick. You'll make it work.
Is it wrong that i feel like it's Christmas morning when I finally see your finished SHIP ?
I liked last year's SHIP, nothing wrong with looking amazing again :P
make it better!
Improve, iterate the design. If you look at my SHIP last year, I could have probably done it in a week. But I went back and re did panels and styles for what felt like weeks to try to get the best design.
Hehe nice! I thought that looked a bit like the CanadARM XD
yay Bomber Shuttles.

I made some removable armor panels. (Those blue ones are way easier to remove than to put back again.) I think they turned out well :)

Simon says it's ok (but it's not nearly as much fun as irl). And I don't think you can get any awards.

Quick question, this is going to be my first time building a SHIP and I have a lot of pieces but not many for the skeletal frame or skin. What are the biggest 2 or 3 piece classes you often use? Plates, technic beams too I suppose. I'm going to be placing a bricklink order soon so I'd like some insight. Thanks!
LEGOHungary
I have a lot of 1x14 technic beams (buy the cheapest colors, they're not visible).
I strengthen them with plates and bricks. I assume you want to cover the frame with mostly studless armor, so I suggest using bricks (mostly 1xn I'd think) and/or tiles with plates.
I'm no expert, but these are my thoughts. (Take a look at my WIP SHIP's frame or armor panels if you wish)

for the frame -
alpha.bricklink.com/pages/clone/catalogitem.page?P=32555#T=C
alpha.bricklink.com/pages/clone/catalogitem.page?P=40345#T=C
alpha.bricklink.com/pages/clone/catalogitem.page?P=3703#T=C
I have found tons of these on PaB walls in Lego shop, they are good at holding the upper and lower frames together and also flipping the underside of the frame to build totally inverted

I hope this is of some use.

LEGOHungary and sioka sculpting: thanks so much! These suggestions definitely give me something to go towards. I image I'll learn as I build but any starting point is great.

What level of "Pre-planning" is acceptable? I did some sorting the other day, and made a brick/technic ruler. Are sketches acceptable?
Looking good Jacob!

Does it count as 'building time' if I put together a prototype frame around August 3 and loved how it turned out so much that I reinforced the design and let it sit for a bit while finishing the rest of the design in LDD? I'm a bit worried that my orders for the parts I don't have won't come in on time, due to having to gather all the parts I could from the far corners of my collection and make sure I had quantities right and other such fluff before ordering.
If it helps any, here's a render of the final revision to my design:

Can't wait!
You can only try your best, and join the honoured ranks of those that dreamed, but wasn't able to finish. Though I do hope you do complete it.
Yes it sort of does count, and sort of is cheating on multiple levels :p
Unless you finish by Sept 3rd!
Then you're all good.
Unmistakable ship! Awesome!

I'm kind of limited by practicality, here - my collection has a fairly broad selection of pieces, but I don't have hundreds upon hundreds of most of those pieces. Since I'm also a college student, I pretty much have to know exactly ahead of time what I need due to a limited budget (no room for screwing around) - and I need to use a digital model to help me develop prototypes from the selection of pieces that I have.
Besides, I thought it was okay to make and submit digital model renders anyway :D
It's very understandable - and the month is suppose to try to push your limits. For some that's just getting to 100 studs due to collection sizes, or for others it's time crunch, others it's how much they can fit into a build - or even how big you can go... SHIPtember is about having fun - building a SHIP, and sharing it with everyone (hence the heavy emphasis on WIPs) ... but you're absolutely right, you've completed the LDD part, hopefully you'll be able to squeeze in the real thing too.
if not ... no big deal, question is, did you have fun?
Ack! you're going to make us wait?

LDD design began on august 17th and finished a few days ago, waiting for BL order to make it on real bricks, hope it will be done before september 17th :

On this shot, the ship is 95 studs high, with some antennas, we'll have the 100 studs high. Is it ok regarding the rules?

Can i use LED-Lights? Without it my ship will look like "not finished".
It's frustrating to have ideas and refraining to test them because it's not September 1st... :)

This is why I hate building at odd angles. Give me some nice houses anyway!

I don't think I'm going to make it... The order made last Tuesday hasn't been shipped out yet! >w<
Sadly, I can't even just build one side of the model and get a picture of that side for the poster, since that last order has so many critical components. Guess that's the last time I make an order from there if I can help it.

Ever heard of something called Space Battleship Yamato?

Last year, my concept exceeded my skill-set and available time. This year, I have more time, less (read 'no') concept and the same skill-set. Even if it's a 100 stud box, I will make a SHIP!

'Stand' by for action!
I wanted a decent stand this year that would tuck neatly inside the bottom of the finished build without hiding any of the SHIP for the side profile images.

My work area for the build to start tomorrow. Another first for me, actually sorting parts. Never did that when I was younger, just dug through the pile of parts looking for what I needed.

I'm excited for my first Shiptember! I was a casual observer last year, as I was only about a month out of my Dark Ages at the time. Over the past year of buying, selling, and building (mostly with my 6 and 4 year old sons as their interest in Lego has grown), my focus has mostly been on Architecture and Star Wars for my personal collection.
This will be my first major MOC, in addition to my first SHIP. I'm very excited to get started, and equally as excited to see how this turns out. Good, bad, or otherwise, I'll be free building this year, and my source material is limited only to my 31 years of sci-fi tv, movie, and video game intake.
Last night, I got the basic beginning of my frame started, and will be able to complete it after my Brickowl order comes in. I'm shooting for 100-110 stud total length when all is said and done, with a maximum width of approximately 16 studs and a height of between 24-30 studs. I've also completed 2 identical cannons and 1 missile array to begin. I hope to get some other components built tonight to start getting the basic shape formed. Most of all, I'm really looking forward to what some of the incredible builders in this group are able to come up with!
