Vintage Film Effect

view profile

Beau Vincent says:

Hey everyone,

I developed a technique that makes your images look like old film.

Example:

I've created a Photoshop CS-CS3 action for you to download.
[Download Here]

If you use it, please post your before and after examples to this post.

Cheers!

-Fallout75

UPDATE:
I've created a PDF document that has step-by-step instructions on how to create this effect using PAINT . NET

Update: 8-12-2014
The link to the action and the pdf are now back up. I have verified this action still works with Photoshop CS6 just fine. Just drag the action into the photoshop window and it should install in your actions panel just fine.
Cheers!

This action is absolutely one of the most fantastic and artistic ones!
Thanks so much,

I've applied it to a set of photos of friend's birthday celebration (with some minor adjustments to the saturation and contrast values set in the actions). The style just fits the Chinese atmosphere so much:

at Jovi's b-day (yum cha) at Jovi's b-day (yum cha) at Jovi's b-day (yum cha) at Jovi's b-day (yum cha) at Jovi's b-day (yum cha) at Jovi's b-day (yum cha)

Sorry I haven't the before effect ones available on flickr.

can anyone tell me why an action may not be working?. it worked the first times but now when i go to apply to the action to a photo i cannot physically press the "record" or "play" on the action. it comes up with a croseed out circle. Would this have anything to do with the file type or anything to do with the actual photo??

Rolling Blue says:

bitteroblivion,
you have to first install the action in PS. Then when you go to the actions pallet within PS, with your photo open, you click the play button. Voila!

If you don't understand how to do this try searching the Photoshop Support Group's topics for "actions" , "using actions" or "installing actions". That should give you all the details.

I do get error messages when using the action in ps cs3.

I have a german photoshop version. translated it says something like:

"The object "layer "hue/saturation 2" " is not available at the moment."

The same error message is coming up for the layers Gradient Fill 2, Gradient Fill 1, Brightness/Contrast 1, ......

I have the choice to proceed or to cancel..

Does anybody get the same error? Somehow it still looks that the effect is applied, but the error messages are annoying.

Would appreciate some help.

Thank you!!

I'm really surprised at the overwhelming response over this action, I'm glad everyone is diggin' it.

I don't know how "Vintage" it really is, but I needed a name at the time and to me it gave me that "old-shoebox-full-of-vintage-photos" feeling.

:-p

Keep it up, I'm loving the results. -F75

You can't use Elements. You have to have a version of CS.

I have added another step to my processing--a b&w gradient layer set to Screen with the opacity set between 25%-50%

there's a little window with "History" and "Actions" tab. Click on the latter. On the upper right you see a little button that looks like "play" button on a cdplayer or anything like it. when you click on it a menu opens and there's also this option: "load actions". click on it, find the action you want to use it and click ok. it'll be shown under the actions tab. click on it and press bigger play button thats located on the bottom of this window. =) i think thats it.

took it a bit further, tweaked the action a bit, added some other features and made this - its a waaaaay older vintage feel. like think 1800's instead of 1970's

i'd love to know thoughts on it, and if anybody is interested in hearing how i did it let me know - maybe fallout75 and i can work on a new action =P.
