Hi All !
I just wondered if you guys gel your strobes when shooting outside in the open on a cloudy dull day and if so what type.

If using a CTB. Should I set my camera's white balance setting to cloudy too ?

I never gel outdoors, I set my WB to flash and go for it, the color temp is close enough for my uses.

Thanks Alfredk

Just another thought..... I totally get what Wolfiesden said an that relates to balancing ambient and flash, but , what if I am under exposing my background considerably with flash dominating.... Do I still apply the same gelling principle as above, in particular choice of white balance setting ?

I think this depends on personal taste.

If you want to have everything the same color and just different exposure you would gel.

If you want the background to be cooler than your flash lit subject you wouldn't gel (or you would gel the other way if you want a really extreme effect).

Oh and with respect to WB:

If you don't gel the flash you could stay with flash white balance which would make your background look cooler.

If you don't gel the flash you could move to shade WB which would make your subject look warmer.

If you gel the flash you would set the WB to match the gel/ambient temperature making the whole frame look neutral.

If you gel and don't change WB you can tweak it in post, but skin tones will probably look a little off until you fix it.

A lot of photography is finding what you like, and figuring out what you are trying to achieve. I've found that if I don't have a vision things fall apart quickly, but I'm also only a hobbyist so that just means I have to try again later.

(PS: Someone double check me on the color shifts, still trying to get it all down.)
