Drag to set position!

Could I just mention here that this group is about Stourport and should really show images that contain a recognisable feature or location in Stourport.

It is nice to see images of a piece of fence, a bird in flight, a solitary flower or a garden bench but if they are not shown in the context of Stourport then could members please not post them. I'm sure there will be plenty of other Flickr groups that would accept these.

Correctly known as Stourport on Severn this small town/suburb of Kidderminster is situated alongside the River Severn in Worcestershire. It is officially part of the Wyre Forest District that was created in the 1972 boundary changes.

Stourport has the distinction of being an early example of a New Town after the village of Lower Mitton was chosen as the terminus of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire canal in 1766.

The whole project - to include locks, basins, warehouses, shops, other industries and domestic dwellings - was the brainchild of the Chief Engineer, James Brindley.

Since the demise of working traffic on the canals to be superseded by leisure traffic Stourport has now become an inland tourist destination with fairgrounds, souvenir shops in addition to the canals now being turned into a Heritage Centre.

The majority of the 20,000 residents of Stourport are now either retired or commute to their places of work in Kidderminster, Worcester and Birmingham.
