Hi all,

I have recently programmed a Homepage that connects to the FLICKR API and reads out all 3-D images from flickr to show them in the output format you can view best.

It does not matter, if the input format is a parallel view picture or a cross view picture. You could choose the following output modes: cross viewing, parallel viewing, color optimized anaglyph mode (recommends red/cyan glasses) or mono mode.

Please have a look at my Website

Cool images! With what stereo camera or stereo lens adapter did you acquire these?
schillr Posted 10 years ago. Edited by schillr (member) 10 years ago
Dear leicar8,

thanks, but these are not MY images. The Homepage just reads out all FLICKR 3D photos and shows them on my Website.

By the way: I use two Sony DSC-V3 cameras twinned with a lanc shephard system that controls both cameras. I will post some images soon.

How do you select flickr 3D photos? from tags?
schillr 10 years ago
The 3D photos are selected from the title, the description and the tags by a special search query.
Balliolman PRO 10 years ago
This is impressively good!

So apart from viewing mode what other benefits does this application offer?
schillr Posted 10 years ago. Edited by schillr (member) 10 years ago
At this time the viewing mode is the only benefit - but I think about some other features that I will implement in the near future, e.g. simple editing functions to improve the images or some better gallery features.

If you have some wishes do not hesitate to post them here or send me an e-mail!
-ytf- PRO 10 years ago
It doesn't display who the photographer is, nor link back to the original photopage. Also, it only seems to show one size.
ofir tirosh 10 years ago
It doesn't work...
No matter what I choose, parallels stay parallel and cross views stay cross views. The image stays the same also when I choose anaglyph.
Am I missing something?
schillr Posted 10 years ago. Edited by schillr (member) 10 years ago
to ofir_tirosh: If it does not work and the images stay always the same you should install or activate the flash player.

to -ytf-: the Username of the photographer and a backlink to flickr are added. Addititional sizes are coming soon.
hotcactuspepper 10 years ago
1) Perhaps you could make a handy URL we could post in our comments for a picture so people can quickly load it in your app.
2) Maybe also have a view that show one image larger and the rest as smaller pics (similar to viewing a photostream in flickr).
schillr Posted 10 years ago. Edited by schillr (member) 10 years ago
please try this handy URL:

The URL is:

parameters are:
imgid=xxxxx (the ID of the image you want to show; required)

inputmode=cross (values could be "cross" and "parallel"; this is the original viewing mode of your photo; required)

outputmode=cross (values could be "cross", "parallel" and "anaglyph"; this is how the photo is shown at my website)

<a target="blank" href="">view as anaglyph, cross-eye or parallel-eye</a>
(this shows a parallel-eye photo in anaglyph mode)

have a look at the result of this example:
view as anaglyph, cross-eye or parallel-eye

to -ytf-: just made an update of the application: different sizes of the images are now possible to choose.

have fun!

Fantastic. I've been waiting for someone to do just this!

Edit: Can I put in a request for half-colour and greyscale anaglyphs?

Edit2: Scratch that - I've just noticed the colour anaglyph is optimised...and very well too. Cool.

This stuff is great, where shall we all send the beer to?

Is there a quick way to add the Shillr tag to a large number of photos, I have been pasting the html above and replacing the image ID.

Is there a way to automatically append it to a batch of photos when uploading?

schillr 10 years ago
Thank you all very much for all your compliments.

Marc, I am sorry, but yet I have no idea how to make a batch upload with the Schillr tag easier. I thought about a bit of Javascript Code, but obviously this is not possible to add at flickr.

When I have a solution, I will post it here.

Iv'e tried to enter this site from Internet Explorer (on a windows machine) and it worked. It's a great site! Very well done, now I know what all the fuss is about! I have flash on my firefox as well but it still didn't work on that browser:-(, not on my linux and not on a windows xp machine.. I don't know if there's an easy way to fix that, anyway, thank you for your time and efforts to build that service, It's a great idea.

schillr 10 years ago
Ofir, I think, your version of the Adobe Flash Player is too old. Perhaps you should update it to the recent version (version 9 or 10).

Please tell me, if that helped.

Dan (aka firrs) 10 years ago
Micheal this is great stuff, but would it be possible so have links to photosets (or perhaps even groups)? Or be able to view pictures of specific users?
schillr Posted 10 years ago. Edited by schillr (member) 10 years ago
I have just added a search box to type in any flickr username.

You can link to all images of a specific user by linking to

Change my username to any other username you know at flickr.

You can also add the query parameter to show only images that correspond with the query

If you have special characters within your username first make a request with your username at and have a look at the url given back.
Example: Dan (aka firrs) will be &user=Dan+(aka+firrs)

I have flash 10 installed, and I also tried to use flash 9 to view the site, they both didn't work. I tried to access your site from a few different computers and they all got the flash activated only in IE, when I used firefox it just showd me regular pictures (not flash). I assumed the problem was support of the firefox browser and not the flash plugin. Are you telling me you can view your site with firefox? That's very strange... Has anyone else here had the same problem?
schillr Posted 10 years ago. Edited by schillr (member) 10 years ago

that is really strange. I have no idea where the problem is, for I can see everything with my firefox or IE 7 or IE 6 browsers.

Perhaps the problem is the flash detection script I have installed on the Website. I just deactivated it. Please have a look again and tell me, if it works now for you.

Dan (aka firrs) 10 years ago
Brilliant. Thanks so much.
ofir tirosh 10 years ago

Thank you very much Michael. I really appreciate your support and attention to everyone's questions and requests (including mine of course).

schillr 10 years ago
You are welcome. I have to thank you all for your suggestions - that enables me to improve the application more and more for you.

Smallrice PRO 10 years ago
Okay Michael, another great thing for your application would be to be able to navigate from one image of a selected photostream or set keeping the same format (e.g. "anaglyph - medium view") without having to go back to the format selection page. This we could view a collection pf photos quicker, keeping anaglyph glasses or stereoscope on all the time (having" next" and "previous" buttons next to the view).
What do you think?
schillr 10 years ago
Done. I have just implemented this feature. Now you have the possibility to go to the next or the previous image. The application "remembers" the size, the output mode and the selected user name and the query you typed into the search boxes before. Try it!

@ Dan (aka firrs): thank you very much for linking my Website. It is a great pleasure for me to see, that the application is willingly used by you.

Duncan _C 10 years ago

That is a VERY cool application. Would it be possible to use it for photos on other sites? I have a variety of images that I format sometimes as anaglyphs, sometimes as parallel, and sometimes as cross-eyed stereo images. The bulk of my images are in my pbase fractal gallery rather than Flickr.

I made an update that could be interesting for you all: the application now automatically converts anaglyph images to black/white stereo pairs. It is not perfect but I think that works rather good.

@Duncan _C: I thought about this possibility, too. Please be patient for this will take a while to work on.

@ofirt tirosh, Duncan _C and Dan (aka firrs): I have added special thanks to the left column of my website for linking. I hope, there will be more people linking this application.
Dan (aka firrs) 10 years ago
Hey - thank you Micheal (schillr)

It's way quicker to link your site than to go to the trouble of making anaglyphs and posting them...but even with that I'm starting to get lazy. I wonder if there is a way to use a single link code ...and have your website know what page the visitor is coming from.

You might want to also post in the anaglyphs group
I think they'll also love your website
schillr Posted 10 years ago. Edited by schillr (member) 10 years ago
Hey Dan,

I am now searching for a while for a solution of a single link code. Desperately with no success. Getting the referrer URL of the visitor does not always work, because some users might have deactivated this possibility in their browser. But I go on searching - there has to be a solution.

I have just posted a question about that to the flickr team and I hope they can help.

It fits not really in this discussion, but maybe it's from interest - there is a similar app for iPhone available for the iPhone called 3Dee!oadr. It's intercepts with the Flickr API and looks for Parallel and Cross-View stereo at Flickr. On your iPhone you can interlace these images than for 3 different anaglyphs modes too.
schillr 10 years ago
I made a small update: if you swith to the anaglyph mode and view a single image you now have the possibility to adjust the stereobase of the anaglyph. This is helpful if the source image is a mounted with frames.

Here is a link to an example image:

Just slide the "adjust Anaglyph" button below the image to the right

Great work. Now the dicatomitc bane of every software developer of a good application; creeping requirements. It would be really nice to have a "on black option". Thanks for the killer app.

geminitwincam: I have just installed an "on black" option.

Just a question: what would you all prefer as default colour: black or white?
Dan (aka firrs) 10 years ago
White please...same as flickr. A lot of people use the white background for fancy frame trickery...very good to have the on-black option though.
breakable statement [deleted] 10 years ago
This is an impressive project. Thanks for your work.

I am interested in an online application that you upload individual left and right photos to and then automatically outputs full quality stereo images in various formats (crosseye, anaglyph, etc.). This would be great for amateurs that don't have Photoshop or the like to create their own. Is there anything like this?

The reason why I'm asking here is because the technology behind Schillr seems like it could easily do this, possibly by accessing one's Flickr and then choosing two separate photos to combine.

I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere or if this is off-topic.
Dan (aka firrs) 10 years ago
There is freeware (e.g. StereophotoMaker) that will do it - and correct any misalignment between the two photos. Schillr is great for translating between formats, but for making the initial stereoscopic image you can't really beat the freeware for speed and ease of use.
breakable statement [deleted] 10 years ago
Nice, but it doesn't work on Mac without emulation. Maybe I should just install WIndows...

Great piece of work! One suggestion and one nit-pick:

Suggestion: Add links to the stereophotography groups to the homepage.

Nit-Pick: When advancing through a stream in original size, it reverts back to medium with each new picture.
schillr 10 years ago
@ Mesoamerica: Dan (aka firrs) is right. is not a tool to create 3D images. It is just thougt to be a viewer to show existing 3D photos in different formats on the web.

I use StereoPhotoMaker myself and and I don't know anything that can compete with it.

Please check this thread for editing and viewing stereopairs

You can zoom into a stereo pair in any viewing mode ( not just anaglyph).
try the crosshair mode on with "pan on".

stay tuned for a tutorial on editing and other options.

Just curious: would the adjustment tool in anaglyph mode (that allows altering the stereo base) also work well on "wiggles"?
schillr 10 years ago
yes, that woud be possible. I will add this feature soon.
schillr 10 years ago
done. Wiggle images can now be adjusted, too. Please try it.

Smallrice PRO 10 years ago
I did, it works great!

Thanks Michael!
Smallrice PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by Smallrice (member) 10 years ago
This one is a good example of how the adjustment can improve a "wiggle":

Before the adjustment the "pivot point" is way behind the subject (Robert aka ThemeParkPhoto), who as a result moves way too much. When you drag the cursor to the right you can get the "pivot point" on the subject, with the foreground beer and background bar surroundings moving in opposite ways.

Of course that means that there is a strip of the photo on the right that is only "mono".

That's a great feature Michael. I hope more people will vote and that the top rated page will be filled with the most interesting and beautiful photos. One small detail that I've noticed - when you view the images on a black background (Schillr on black) the stars still have their white background.

Great job!

Hello Simon,

I think there are two possibilities:

1) does not work with local images from your hard disc. The images you want to convert must be available on the internet

2) the images may not be within a password protected area, because my scripts do not have access to these areas.

Does this answer help?

Best regards

sharper3d 9 years ago
I profoundly appreciate what you have provided with this work and site...Bravo! There is seems to be just one area were improvement would be easy. The photographer, not the program, should assure the quality of the ANAGLYPH OVERLAY. It is usually harder to create a fine anaglyph display, due to overlay and contrast issues, from either of the 2 possible pairs. I would suggest that a trial anaglyph, be made, for alignment purposes, even if the "flickr" posting is to be made in " cross" or "parallel " . I don't presume to know precisely how to integrate that approach into your software...but I do know that anaglyph overlay is more unforgiving than either dual image formats. Comments?
vreijs 9 years ago
Hello Schillr, Great service!!!
Would it be possible with parallel viewing (and only there) to be able to provide the screen resolution and the eye separation?
In that case you program would be able to resize the parallel pair in such away that it is adjusted to a person's eye separation (as is essential for parallel viewing). It would be handy that this info is remember (a cookie)
I am using that method on my web page:
for my stereo gallery page:

Let me know what you think.

All the best,

P.S. Would it be easy to add this functionality to other browsers (like SeaMonkey or IE).
vreijs 9 years ago
To shaterp3d/Schillr: I have been thinking about this anaglyph issue. I know some people want to be able to control the way how the anaglyph is being make (perhaps for artistic reasons). I assume that from parallel/cross to anaglyph is a kind of transformation formula/matrix. So if the program would accept such a formula say from the EXIF data in a parallel/cross picture; would it then be possible to make the correct artistic anaglyph?

All the best,

schillr 9 years ago
Update: everybody is now able to save the adjustment of the stereo base.

This feature is currently only available for medium size images.

If you click on the "Save" button, the page will be reloaded with a new URL and the adjustment settings are saved. This URL can be sent to your friends, so that they can see the adjusted image.

If you want to see the original version, just click on the "Reset" button and the adjustment will be reset to default.

Please try this feature. Suggestions are welcome.

Best regards

vreijs 9 years ago
Hello Michael,
That works (these save/reset buttons).
A few requests:
. Would it be possible to crop the pictures when using the slider?
. I am also wondering if the term 'adjust stereo base' for this slider is correct. Is it not 'adjust stereo window' (adjusting the stereo base is not easy, can only be done by rephotographing, IMHO)?
. Related to my above question, would it be possible to use this slider when doing parallel viewing, but then for changing the picture separation/width, in that case my above request would be covered;-).
. As the picture width (eye separation) is related to a single viewer, the save should work on a cookie (but on the URL).

Thanks for considering this.

All the best,

P.S. If I right click a thumbnail in the stereophotography page, I get a small picture (without the save/reset button). I need to press 'medium' to see 'normal size' and the button.
schillr Posted 9 years ago. Edited by schillr (member) 9 years ago
Hello Victor,

thanks for your suggestions. I will add them soon.
I have already renamed the "adjust stereo base" to "adjust stereo window". You are right that the stereo base can only be changed by rephotographing.

I have now added a button for viewing green/magenta anaglyphs as well.

Cropping and picture separation are coming soon.

Best regards

Thank you for your Schillr website which is great, especially for people like me who have only mastered the parallel technique.

When I first became interested in stereoscopic photography back in the 90s, the use of the "View Magic 3D viewer produced by Dennis Brown (Dimension Press) was very popular amongst members of the Stereoscopic Society and I was wondering if you had had any requests for this format to be included in your Schillr website. Basically the right image is mounted directly above the left image and viewed using the "view Magic" viewer which was available from Dimension Press (but I don't think they produce these any more). The advantage was that standard size (6'x4') photos could be stored in a standard photo flip album and viewed easily. The advantage for the web is that long landscape photos can be viewed in this way. Please see an example of the format .

If you are interested I can give you more details, but I think it would be an interesting addition to your Schillr website, which some of us oldies would identify with and would allow for large landscape format photos to be viewed.
Many thanks
