Night shots

Hi- I recently purchased an Alpha 330 and was wondering how good is the kit lens (18-55 mm) for night photography. Thanks.

Over all for night shots you'd like to have a faster lens but it can do alright. For still shots with a tripod it will be fine but to stop any kind of motion in low light will be tough... unless your close enough to use a flash.

Thank you. What would be a good faster lens?

It really depends on the focal length you need. For short to medium range you can save yourself a lot of money and get a great low light lens with the 50mm f/1.8. If you need to shoot things farther away its going to cost ya.

For longer range you need a lens like the 70-200mm f/2.8 but Sony's is 1,600 bucks. I'd look for Sigma or an older used Minolta if that's too much.

Thank you again. I have a rather stupid question: which has better zoom, 75-300 or 18-250? I guess 75-300 =4X and the latter ~14X. But does the overall closeness of the distant object change much, since one goes to 250 and the other 300, only 50 mm difference?
