ricks2050 ADMIN October 12, 2014
We enjoyed the St. Mary's Class of 1964 50th reunion at Branson, Missouri, on October 7-10, 2014.

We attended three shows, had a welcome buffet, and a celebration dinner. In between, lots of partying, laughing, and some drinking.

The event was organized by Lee Ann, senior class president, with support from Donna, Beth, and Sandy. Fourteen classmates attended, most with their spouses.

Surprise of the Week: Allen Sullivan's first name is Clarence.

Group Description

St. Mary's-Colgan Class of 1964
Purpose of Group

This online group is a place for the members of the Class of 1964 to gather, share photos, and plan future events. We all loved St. Mary's (now St. Mary's-Colgan) High School and its traditions. Many of us attended St. Mary's schools from kindergarten through high school. We have never forgotten our school friends and classmates. With this group, we hope renew and maintain these friendships.

St. Mary's -- Then and Now

St. Mary's Parochial school was started in 1885. It was discontinued in 1906 because of financial problems and then restarted in 1915.

The original elementary school, which we attended, was completed in 1924. A third story was added in 1937 to accommodate a gym and additional classrooms for the high school (grades 9 through 12), which began operation the previous year.

The new high school building was completed in 1960. We were the first class to complete all four years of high school in the new building. Sister de Chantal was our principal from 1960 through 1963. Sister Veronica was principal our senior year. Since then, the high school has been renovated and a wing to house the junior high has been constructed on the south side. The name of St. Mary's High School was changed to St. Mary's-Colgan High School to honor Father Colgan, who died in 1966. The high school is still located at 212 East 9th Street, Pittsburg, Kansas 66762.

In 2006, the original elementary school building was demolished and replaced with a spacious, single-story building for Kindergarten through 6th Grade. The elementary school is still located at 213 East 9th Street, Pittsburg, Kansas 66762.

The railroad tracks north of school have been removed making room for a new gym and practice field. Basketball games now are played in the new gym. Football games are still played at Pittsburg High's Hutchinson Field. The team continues to walk to the convent and to serenade the nuns with Good Night Irene after each win.

The size of St. Mary's school system (K-12) is about the same as when we attended. Total enrollment for Kindergarten through 12th Grade varies between 500 and 550 with an average number of students per grade between 41 and 45. Just a few nuns teach at St. Mary's now, primarily in the elementary school. We have had only lay principals since 1974.
