Group Description

South Australians of World War 1 : Share their story is a showcase of some of the many First World War portraits from the State Library of South Australia and State Records of South Australia archival collections. We invite you to add your own photographs of South Australians who served in the First World War as well as add their service and biographical information to our photographs.

The State Library of South Australia has digitised just under 500 First World War portraits, taken from the Chamberlain Collection and has combined these with a series of photographic portraits of South Australian soldiers, sailors and nurses supplied by State Records of South Australia (GRG 26/5/4).

By submitting a photograph to this group the owner confirms that they have the legal right to share the photograph, and in so doing they give a non exclusive licence to the State Library of South Australia to reproduce and distribute the photograph.

Records of Australian First World War soldiers are digitised and can be viewed online at the National Archives of Australia.

Many thousands more photographs from our collections can be accessed online at State Library of South Australia Catalogue and at the State Records of South Australia flickr site.

Information about the Chamberlain Collection and tips on how to research military personnel are in our South Australians of World War 1 Library Guide. Other First World War military records held by the library can be found in our Military Records Guide.

State Records of South Australia holds a collection of close to 3000 photographic portraits of soldiers, sailors and nurses who took part in the First World War. These photographs were collected by the administration department of the then Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery of South Australia from 1918 to 1952. Each photograph is accompanied by a ‘particulars sheet’ giving full name, date of birth, date of enlistment, trade or calling, birthplace, address prior to enlistment, rank, number, unit and distinctions. An index to the photographs can be found through State Records’ catalogue and more information can be found by contacting State Records’ References and Access team at or (08) 8204 8791.

Enquiries regarding this Group can be sent to Jenny Scott at the State Library of South Australia.
