Group DescriptionSixth & I Historic Synagogue is a non-denominational, non-membership, non-traditional synagogue that aims to reinvigorate connections to Judaism by offering outstanding programming and dialogue opportunities that speak to personal, spiritual, and social interests. As an incubator of innovation, Sixth & I primarily works to engage unaffiliated Jews in their twenties and thirties, while simultaneously serving as a multi-generational community resource.
Dedicated as a Conservative synagogue in 1908 and then serving as an African Methodist Episcopal Church for the latter part of the 20th century, Sixth & I was saved from being turned into a nightclub and, instead, transformed into a hub for Jewish life in downtown DC. Sixth & I opened its doors in 2004, seeking to fill an unmet need in the Washington area for people in search of non-traditional ways to embrace their heritage, whether religiously, culturally, or socially.
Sixth & I offers a fluid blueprint for modern Jewish communal engagement in a warm, non-judgmental environment. With programming that is both spontaneous and deliberate, Sixth & I satisfies the multi-faceted interests of a generation of young Jews in search of outlets other than traditional synagogues in which to explore their Jewish identity. Priding itself on the beauty of choice, people can visit Sixth & I for concerts, comedic performances, lectures by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, a game of trivia with young professionals, workshops on genealogy research, a Shabbat service with live music, a tour of the historic sanctuary, and so much more. Sixth & I has been recognized two years in a row by Slingshot as one of the most creative and effective Jewish organizations in the country.
In an attempt to dismantle perceived barriers in the Jewish community, Sixth & I accommodates all streams of Judaism, houses six sets of prayer books, and welcomes rabbis of all Jewish denominations to lead services. Blending the best of arts and culture with the best of spiritual services, Sixth & I is a re-imagined gateway to Jewish life in Washington, DC.
