For this year Help Portrait, we're going to the same location as last year.

We are going to work with New Citizen Life Center Shanghai, to help one of the local migrant school, to take portrait for the children (and their family).

WHERE

新市民生活馆三林馆
归泾村老年活动中心一楼(上浦西路如海超市南走200米过桥)
No 168, Town Center Road, Guijing Village, Sanlin Town, Pudong
Shanghai 201104, China

WHEN

The event will start around 10AM, which means we need to be there and start preparations at 9AM !

MEETING POINT

Meetup point should be same as last year: Line 8 metro station inside - 陵兆新村站 - Ling Zhao Xin Cun station.
Meetup time: 8:30AM

WHAT

Our target this year is a group of about 110 families. It is not as much as last year but several people from previous events will not be here so we decided to scale down a bit.

WHO

Alright, so we need to start putting together teams for the shooting.

The goal this year is to set up 3 sets meaning we should be able to shoot 3 families at a time.

For that we will need:
Photographer: 6 (take turns, break into 3 groups, 2 photogs each, the 2 will take turns to shoot, one will be the assistant of the other, hand over card to printer the time the other shoot another family)







Printer/Editing: 3 (Canon is providing us with free printer, ink and photo paper (and maybe free photo folders... :P) so we should be able to have 1 printer per photographer team. printer must have his own PC/Mac with Lightroom - will try to prepare templates in advance to speed up printing this year)




"Front desk": 3-4 peoples (the most important role of HP !! need to direct each family to different photogs, hand prints to families, control the flow)

Again, we would like to remind you that, even though none of us are professional, it is a big event, and we really need organization and commitments.

Please indicate which role you would like to play (please give both first and 2nd choice, so in case let's say 12 people wants to be photogs, then we will have to pick....).

大概人数:110人/家庭(对今年少因为今年组织者也少了)

集合再地铁8号线 - 陵兆新村站
时间: 8:30早上

对一个这样的活动来说,我们都应该知道不可能每个人都是摄影师的。所以就要分工,以下就是大概的分工:
摄影师6名(分3组,每组2个,轮流拍,当一个拍的时候另外一个当助手)
打印员3名
“前台”3-4人,负责分派各家庭到不同的摄影师,还有照片将会在前台拿。

另外居然有足够人手,我们还想有以下的:
拍视频的:1-2名,记录当天情况
场记摄影师2名,同样是记录当天情况
我会在这里(下面),根据各位的报名列出来。

大家都看到,如此大的活动,是非常需要大家的合作。
所以假如你决定参加这个活动, 请在下面报名, 同时注明你当天想当什么角色, (请注明第一和第二选择)
我会在这里整理好然后到大概一周前贴出来。

But btw,
The same location means almost the same families & kids ?? Why can't we try some new locations? I think down to jinshan or up north to chongmin, there are also similar schools we can help ...

I was a behind-the-scene photographer last year and don't mind to do it again. Violet would sign up for the front desk role. We would also be the printer transporters ;-)

The original purpose of this event is help the under-privileged families got professional family shots for them to keep and share. We gonna have studio-like setup because it is something they are harder to reach, and if you have 100+ families and don't want to mess up, you need to be fair to everyone. ;-)

Milos, there will be Canon shooters, like Lumi, you can pair with one of them.

else i can do edit+print as well!

Hey guys sorry too busy these months so didn't have chance to check on flickr!
Fortunately Alfre and Damien gave me heads up on the event!
So what can I do? No more coffee queen title avaliable this year for me! :-P

I talked to my friends already, so yes we can bring a team.
I can do whatever needed though...directing kids to their groups?
bring coffee to everyone? assistant? sending memeory card to each printer?
anything needed just let me know! as long as nothing to do with printer..:P

Ok, so everyone.. reminder...

photographers:
- make sure you bring at least 3 memory cards, so it can be swap (format them first!)
- and the proper card reader for the editors (since everyone might have different cards.
- extra battery, it's gonna last a whole day
- Bring whatever lighting gear you need, but only what you need, as it is quite a walk there. (unless you GOT A CAR)

Editors/Processors/Printers:
- the printer we will be using is MG7180 from Canon. Please try download the driver before going there. as there will most likely be NO INTERNET that day. ( can you confirm the printer model? )
- bring an extra card reader just in case
- don't forget your power supply
- Lightroom is strongly suggested as the weapon of choice from past year experience.

Everyone:
- Bring a pen and/or marker since you never know when you will need it
- whatever snack you need to last the day, (energy/chocolate bar is your friend!)
- water, the nearby supermarket are not quite nearby... (even tho some say they can drink coffee whole day)
- cellphone mobile battery pack (don't expect there will be enough power outlet to charge your phone, we will be lucky if we have enough juice to run all the printing station. (and of course the proper cable)

yes, you are welcome to join. I am not sure if there is still a need for photographers but you could do some other jobs like behind the scene or jump into a photographer duo to rotate with them...

Updated the post. Put new comers as Assistant for now, we can rotate between photogs during the day, no problem.

we gonna have one lighting setup, camera, laptop, USB cables, and card readers. should have 1-2 extra flashes and manual triggers to lend others.

I will bring 1x light stand + umbrella and at least 4x flash.
I will check if I still have another umbrella but there i don't have a stand for it

To all the volunteers of Help Portrait Shanghai 2013,

Congratulations again on yet another successful event! Here are the highlights of our HP 2013 at the New Citizen Life Centre (新市民生生活馆) in Linzhao Xincun (凌兆新村) in Pudong.

A group of 16 photographers and volunteers (compared to around 25-30 last year) helped photographed 215 families. Other fun statistics:

4 printers + 4 stations
4 French, 1 Singaporean, 2 Germans, 2 Canadian, 2 HK, 4 mainland Chinese, 1 American
8 hamburgers from KFC
14 flashes
2 dogs (a first for HP Shanghai!)
2 coffee machines
4 walkie talkies
1 Arnold soundboard
1 Doraemon toy (on Kirk's camera)
15 bowls of wontons which equals to around 120 wontons
1 reporter from NPR
5 kids who started crying when they saw Lutz
Range of PSI 230-250 / average 200 AQI
1 black cab

I also want to thank you all to make this happen. Not only did we take 215 portraits but also with a lot less people as the previous events. That is what I call professional :-)

The new admins of the group did a great job in organizing that event, thank you to take that task from our shoulders :-)

Canon not only provided all the printers inclusive all the material for the fifth year in a row but also sending us the newest high tech inkjet printer with an awesome photo print quality. Without Canon we would not be able to do that event in such a large scale. Thank you, 有り難うございます, arigatō gozaimasu Canon!

Most of you would have seen Help Portrait Shanghai being featured on US National Public Radio (NPR) here.

Help Portrait HQ in Seattle was alerted to this and they have reached out to us expressing their pride in our team carrying the spirit of HP here in Shanghai. I will respond to them sharing out day's success but also highlights of the great work the HP Shanghai team has done over the last 5 years.
