For our 2nd contest here on SCI-Lug we will be building what we all love: Starfighters. But here is the catch it has to be small! Here are all the guidelines:

Starfighter:
1. Your starfighter must be able to fit in a 14x14 landing grid and stand no taller than 5 bricks tall.
2. It MUST be to mini-fig scale. Meaning a full minifig must be able to fit in the cockpit.
3. If your starfighter is submitted as part of a diorama (ie: a hanger bay), you will be judge ONLY on the starfighter.

Entry:
1. You must be a member of SCI-Lug.
2. The starfighter must be built specifically for this contest! If it has been entered in another contest before the judging of this contest, you will be disqualified.
3. Entries must be made here on this thread (please post pics and not links). Please submit 2 different pics of your MOC.
4. Only one entry per person.
5. There must be at least 10 entries for the winners to receive their prizes, however, we will go ahead and judge the entries either way.
6. Entries must be posted by noon (cst) on February 1st.

Prizes:
1st place: 1 LEGO set ($40 or less) of your choosing from LEGO
Shop @ Home delivered directly to you.
2nd place: 1 LEGO set ($20 or less) of your choosing from LEGO
Shop @ Home delivered directly to you.
3rd place: A flickr pro account (or $20 via paypal) payed for by Nannan Z!

Judging:
The judging will be done by the Admins (who are not allowed to enter in the contest).

Let the building begin!

I think a pro account will then disqualify the winner ;-)

How many of these are going to BrickFest in Portland this year? Maybe we could get them all together in one place. They're small enough, some people might even be willing to mail in their entries....?
supreme eyes [deleted] Posted 10 years ago. Edited by supreme eyes (member) 10 years ago
Nannan just said for the winner...he may be willing to pass that to the 2nd place winner if the 1st place winner has one...but that is entirely up to him and I will let him make the call on that one! I am wanting to go to brickfest (am mine will come if I am there) but the $$$ is very thin right now, thanks to the economy and a dead transmission in my Nissan.
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
Nannan has suggested that the flickr pro account goes to the 3rd place winner instead of being added to the first place winner...sorry for any confusion, but we are going to add a 3rd place prize!

So, 3rd place wins the flickr pro account.

A collaborative display at Brickfest would be very cool, except I could not attend considering where I live... Since I'm sure many others could not attend, either mailing the MOC in may be a good idea, or doing another collaborative at Brickworld.

The Pro account idea sounds great, (and I thought it was already as good as it can get!)
Micah G. 10 years ago
I might be willing to mail my entry in and the new one I'm working on
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
Is there anyone who is attending Brickfest that would like to coordinate the "Mail-In" fighters? That is assuming that we do a display.
Cole Blaq Posted 10 years ago. Edited by Cole Blaq (member) 10 years ago
To see them all together sounds great,
even if postage from Europe (where I actually live) is expensive.
BTW who would take responsibility like provide a contact address, taking care at the event and also sending it back...? Any Ideas?
Voidology 10 years ago
I'm all game for mailing my fighter in, but do the fighters for the display have to follow the 14x14 and 5 bricks tall regulations? I can go either way...
opallix 10 years ago
I might send mine in, but are there expenses for having them displayed?
@ McDoug, this is a collaborative display for 14x14x5 starships only, I believe.

There's a possibility I may be attending BrickFest, so if Bill Ward is interested in helping me out, I'd love to help coordinate a small-fighter display. After working with CheifLUG at BrickCon, I think this'd be a neat idea, and I could help out.

Also, here's my entry I built several weeks back, but never entered for fear of it being too tall. However, when placed sideways, I believe it fits within the prescribed grid.

Just so the judges know, if I win third place, I will offer the Flickr pro account to the next eligible non-pro participant.

Glory and honor are all I crave.
curtydc 10 years ago
in my quick count (might not be accurate), it looks like the contest has a total of 65 fighters submitted so far! (I also counted at least 3 others that aren't actually for the contest... kind of confusing). This is going to be tough for you Judges, I've seen so many that look like winners to me. Wonder if someone will photoshop a group shot of everyone's ships.
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
Thank you worker201...we will just have to wait and see if you get your glory and honor! That is very generous of you.

curtydc: The judging will be REALLY tough as there are a number of amazing entries...we may have to throw in a couple of "honorable mentions".

Designed and produced by Deimos Engineering, this craft was used to hunt pirates in Earth orbit. The wing assembly on the right protects the pilot from solar radiation and can absorb light laser fire. It opens up fully to allow a communications array to hunt for pirates with the least amount of "noise" from the engines. And the smaller wings that open up on the right assembly display a wide range of weapons.

It assure you it fits into the 14x14x5 allocated space! This was great fun! There's one more photo below where the whole side of the starfighter opens up;

Brickeye,
I'm very sorry that I did not make it clear that my first ship was not my entry, sorry again for the confusion. I should have deleted my first ship when I posted my second, I will now. If it means that I do not enter, that is fine. But, uhhhh, well..... can I change my first ship to the latter? Believe me, it's fine if I can't. It's just, well, when I saw that Crimson Wolf had posted another ship, I thought I might do the same. But, by the way, there really is no rule saying that you cannot change your ship before the deadline. And, out of curiosity, why might it not be fair? But, you're the admin, I'm cool with anything.
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
There was some discussion about it earlier in the thread...but basically it is not fair to change your submission after you have seen other submissions. The "One Entry" rule some implies that your first entry is your only entry...it's not black and white, sorry. I had already downloaded your first entries pics and so I consider it your entry. I already deleted your second entry from this thread. As far as Crimson Wolf's let me go back and see what happened there and I will handle it accordingly...it has been a really tough week at work so I will need to refresh my mind on his stuff.
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
Okay, Crimson Wolf's first post was of a fighter he built previous to his contest. He was bsically saying, "Hey, I have built one of these before...I am going to enter." His statement at the end of his post: "This is not my entry." was not added a couple days later like yours was. In fact the MOC he posted in the pic was one of the reasons that I thought this contest would be fun!

Quick answer: Crimson Wolf only entered once.
Voidology Posted 10 years ago. Edited by Voidology (member) 10 years ago
Alright, that's fine. Sorry for the mixup! :)

Btw, was I disqualified or something? Like, am I still in just with my first "entry"?
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
All "non-entries" have been deleted! Please only post pics of MOC that are being entered, please.
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
Yes, your first entry is still "qualified" so you are still in the contest...I guess you deleted it, if you want to post pics again so others can see, go ahead. I have the pics downloaded.

Hey hey!

New Member. Hope this works. I present "The Bailiff". Yes, I chose the colors in homage to the new sets. This is a two seater, which I only seen a few of. The pictures are terrible, as my regular camera decided to take a powder. These are from my cellphone, which is feeble.

I'm not sure what the guidelines were for "editing" the pictures, so I left them oriented as they were taken. I also forgot my cellphone atuo-orientation is broken so it reverses every image, therefore these are also backwards. :)

More awful pics here:

g2necrotron: I don't think there will be any complaints about cleaning up the photos. If you look at other photos, there are a number with the background eliminated, etc. As long as you're not fudging the size of the model or something like that, I wouldn't expect anyone to whine.

I think that if you're only allowing one entry per person, then that person should be entitled to decide which one it is. Someone shouldn't be punished because they came up with a mediocre (in their own view) idea first, only to be inspired later on. Otherwise it would have a chilling effect on early entries.

Yeah, Bill I have been thinking about that exact "backlash" to the decision that I made. I think I will be re-evaluating that for later contests but for now the decision has been made.
_nash Posted 10 years ago. Edited by _nash (member) 10 years ago
(wrt: brickeye & Bill) Although I don't really think allowing people to change their entries prior to the deadline is a big deal... no one forced those people to post the first thing that came to their mind the day they heard about the contest. You clearly stated the deadline and people knew they could wait till later on in the contest. But people get post happy then regret not waiting, that's not your fault and I applaud you for not wavering in your original intentions. Anyone could have done like Peter did and posted a couple of these in their own photostream, then decided which they (and everyone else as the case may be) liked more and entered it in the contest; probably the smarter thing to do. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I don't see reason to coddle those who acted premature. People can still build cool things even if that MOC isn't in the contest.
Fredoichi PRO 10 years ago
Bill: I don't think this should be changed, it simply makes a sloppy contest. I think it's just like the other contest rules/restrictions which forces people to think twice, longer and better of what to build and what to enter... if they have any doubts or need more inspiriation from other entries, they can or should wait...

Also, from all people who entered, how many requested to change their entry? One, two, maybe three?

Brickeye: stick to it, like you did... that's what makes this contest fun and good!

Hi all!!!

Well, finally got my entry finished and photographed today... this comp has been loads of fun! Thanks to the organisers and here's to a lot more cool comps like this in the future!

This is the XK-990 cross-fire... originally built as an endo-exo atmospheric platform for repair work on orbital stations, due to recent pirate activity they have been retro-fitted by many station owners to fill a defence role, their robotic arms and welding torches replaced with rapid-fire laser cannons and miniature concussion missiles.

Here she is in flight:

And in the hangar:

The ship deploys to full size for flight... compliance pics of it in it's folded up format are shown here:

and here:

farm4.static.flickr.com/3407/3239821080_2336b63531_o.jpg

Please... someone tell me if I've done anything that breaks the rules or if more pics are needed and I'll take some more pics before the deadline!

Cheers all!

Here's my 14x14x5 starship. It was a big challenge building in this format! Thanks for hosting such a great contest!

The Boxer FTF (Fission Turbine Fighter) is a multi-role scout and interceptor. It's small stature is not to be underestimated as it can generate over 4 Million Kn of thrust in under 2 tenths of a second making it the fastest ship of it's size.

It is an agile skirmisher and can be deployed with light ship to ship armaments not shown here due to size restrictions... ;)
