For our 2nd contest here on SCI-Lug we will be building what we all love: Starfighters. But here is the catch it has to be small! Here are all the guidelines:

Starfighter:
1. Your starfighter must be able to fit in a 14x14 landing grid and stand no taller than 5 bricks tall.
2. It MUST be to mini-fig scale. Meaning a full minifig must be able to fit in the cockpit.
3. If your starfighter is submitted as part of a diorama (ie: a hanger bay), you will be judge ONLY on the starfighter.

Entry:
1. You must be a member of SCI-Lug.
2. The starfighter must be built specifically for this contest! If it has been entered in another contest before the judging of this contest, you will be disqualified.
3. Entries must be made here on this thread (please post pics and not links). Please submit 2 different pics of your MOC.
4. Only one entry per person.
5. There must be at least 10 entries for the winners to receive their prizes, however, we will go ahead and judge the entries either way.
6. Entries must be posted by noon (cst) on February 1st.

Prizes:
1st place: 1 LEGO set ($40 or less) of your choosing from LEGO
Shop @ Home delivered directly to you.
2nd place: 1 LEGO set ($20 or less) of your choosing from LEGO
Shop @ Home delivered directly to you.
3rd place: A flickr pro account (or $20 via paypal) payed for by Nannan Z!

Judging:
The judging will be done by the Admins (who are not allowed to enter in the contest).

Let the building begin!

Clarification please.
14x14 landing grid, as in 14 studs x 14 studs?
because that's seems purdy small, not put off at all, just making sure I got it right? - as those two pictured above are bigger than that, yes?
JK Renegade [deleted] 7 years ago
Yes, 14studs. Landing gear included (the 14x14 is in landed position, as if that is all the room it would have on a carrier). Steelharbingerofdeath: I don't know what that would translate to, sorry. I had some difficulty with LEGO Shop @ Home last time in shippin the $50 GC to Canada...that is why I am doing sets. Can someone else help with the translation?
HStrang [deleted] 7 years ago
I will enter. Thank god, a small build.

Go time! I've got an idea...~LL
JK Renegade [deleted] 7 years ago
Just to clarify as well, it can be smaller than the 14x14 limit.
kojman47 7 years ago
What currency is '£'?
NewRight 7 years ago
I also have a question. Are custom elements from BrickArms, BrickForge, Arealight, Kam, etc. accepted?
HStrang [deleted] 7 years ago
Kojo: GB pounds. The currency british people use.

Brickeye: Can it be atmospheric or must it be a spacecraft?
JK Renegade [deleted] 7 years ago
Custom elements are accepted...however I would prefer that you don't "modify" LEGO elements (such as paint, cut, chew, or whatever) you won't be disqualified for it but it will hurt your chances.

It can be atmospheric, but it is a Starfighter contest so if you build an atmospheric fighter it needs to be able to travel in space as well.

Hope that helps.

14x14 is VERY small, I tested my small fighter out against a measured out square, and it's like 21 studs wide and almost 18 studs long, and it's pretty dang small compared to some other fighters. Though probably therein lies the challenge.
UltraQ 7 years ago
Does the landing bay have to be oriented with the 14 x 14 as the floor, or can we have a landing bay that is 14 studs tall by 14 deep and 5 bricks wide?
MOD
Crimson Wolf 7 years ago
Also, can it fit into the specifications in any direction? Like diagonally in the 14x14 landing pad?
MOD
Crimson Wolf Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Crimson Wolf (moderator) 7 years ago
Just so you know bridboykristan, you have to post pictures, not links, Entry rule #3.
Just making sure you knew.

dkromp 7 years ago
crimson wolf is correct but the image size does not seam to fit even if i play with the sizes.
If it has folding wings, antennae, weapons, etc. then can it qualify as long as those things fit in the 14x14 space when retracted? In other words, is the 14x14 space representing a landing pad or a storage bay?
MOD
Crimson Wolf 7 years ago
If you make me an admin or a mod (even temporarily) I could probably fix it.
Also no-one has answered my question about the diagonal fit.
:Bob: Posted 7 years ago. Edited by :Bob: (member) 7 years ago
^ I'm not able to make an official ruling, but there does not appear to be any explicit rule against putting the ship diagonally on the plate.
JK Renegade [deleted] 7 years ago
Bill Ward...Yes, When landed it has to fit in a 14 x 14 but it can "open up" and be bigger! That is exactly what I did with the Spitfire!

Diagonally is okay.

Birdboy, give it a name if you could...
JK Renegade [deleted] 7 years ago
Yes, 14x14 is very small! That is what is challenging about this build.
kojman47 7 years ago
Would 15x14 be accepted? Probably not but...
JK Renegade [deleted] 7 years ago
Nope, I am going to be pretty picky about the 14x14. It's tough, I know...those were the standards I put upon myself for the Spitfire and I had to rework it a couple of times! Good Luck guys.

Does flight orientation matter? The engine configuration I've got lets it take off from a position that fits within the size limits, but it looks more interesting in semi-vertical flight.

Question: 5 bricks tall rule includes landing gear ? If my Moc is less than 5 bricks tall in flight configuration but with landing gear on is more than that, it qualifies?

From what I understand the 5 bricks is in a landed position, like that's all the room it has in a carrier.

Dr. X - not to be picky, but you're too wide. Remember, a brick is taller than it is wide - the ratio of brick dimensions is 5 x 5 x 6. So those wings of yours which are 5 bricks wide are equal to 6 studs wide. Your fighter is actually 16 studs wide (not counting the studs on the wing tips).
Big_X 7 years ago
Make it moar chibi!
Dr. X. Posted 7 years ago. Edited by Dr. X. (member) 7 years ago
@UltraQ: Curses! I know that ratio myself, and I should have done it properly. I was lazy and used a plate, and it came out at 14.

Anyway, am I still in, Brickeye? 16 is pretty close to 14...
peterlmorris PRO 7 years ago
Dude, if I had two extra studs in any one direction, neither of mine would look so dang chibi.

with the size requirements... really ought to include a link to a pic showing they will in fact fit in the box. Or at least have them available, don't you think?
JK Renegade [deleted] 7 years ago
Sorry for the slow response:

Dr. X submit me a pic of it on a plate with walls around it, similar to what fe2cruz did above and that will be the deciding factor. It has to fit, or it will be disqualified...sorry.

Wiseman_lego it has be 5 tall in the landed position.
JK Renegade [deleted] 7 years ago

Legolord-If I were you I would build a nice little wall all around it, leaving the opening 14x14 (check out petermorris' photostream) and if it doesn't fit, then sorry, it will be disqualified!

To answer this for everyone, anything, even a hair over 14x14x5 will not be considered eligible!
