So, what's different about this group from the CSF group or the LEGO Sci-Fi group or the others? There are so many groups on flickr, I just wondered if there was a special purpose for this one not served by the others.

I was wondering the same thing.

Its funky.
Kristian.Stenslie 10 years ago
I think this group is specifically for millitary-sci fi.
The Pumpkin Man 10 years ago
It is.
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
It is for Military Sci-fi only. We are planning on making building contests a large part of this group...
Happy Weasel PRO 10 years ago
Ah, I didn't garner that from the fuel tanker contest.
onosendai2600 10 years ago
Yes I agree with Dan. Space fuel tanker reads civilian scifi to me all the way, which isn't a bad thing just not "Military Sci-fi only".

Also wasn't there a doomed group of builders called SciBrick way back in the day?

Depends, in Modern Day we use Fuel Trucks to get Fuel to our Vehicles every now and then, we would probably still be using them in the Future.
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
Actually the idea is more like the refuelers that the military uses to refuel fighters in flight (but obviously not limited to just that) The military has to transport it fuel some how and they also have to be able to protect it!
supreme eyes [deleted] 10 years ago
And really guys, if you don't like it then don't build that's okay! The prize would be worth it to me!

yes brickeye is right this group is for anything sci-fi you can make refuelers but thats not all.You can build any ting in the realm of sci-fi.
5aint 10 years ago
Its still funky.

Funkay! Shake your bootay!
Paul B. Hartzog 10 years ago
I don't build military builds much myself, being a pacifist, so I hope this group doesn't decide to swing that way. :-)

dkromp 10 years ago
Oh no you can build whatever is in the realm of sci-fi
vìnn 10 years ago
Okay, so brickeye says its for military sci-fi only, and dkromp says its for all sci-fi. Which one's it gonna be?
little furniture [deleted] 10 years ago
Of course, no military (be it in real life or science fiction) can function without a lot of support vehicles including lots of fuel tankers, cargo vehicles and ammunition carriers (i.e. HEMTT, HUMVEE, 2.5 ton trucks, tank transporters, etc.).
Skinny Boy 10 years ago
Why was I asked to join, when I have no sci-fi creations in my photostream? Yes, I do have some military type things, but this is futuristic isn't it?
mickomaley 10 years ago
well skiny boy love it or leave it!

Not to criticize you Brickeye, for you have done a very good job with managing this group, but I do believe that there are quite a few groups like this. It would be nice if there wasn't any more.

By all means, you should keep this group, as it is a great success, but the little ones which don't even pass 20 members are getting annoying.

Cpt. Decius, I agree with you...there are a lot of little groups out there that aren't worth messin' with, but that doesn't mean that people shouldn't start new ones. There will always be the lesser things in life, that's what makes the great things great! Thanks for the encouraging comments. We are definitely far from perfect here at Sci-Lug but we're trying!

My philosophy on flikr groups is simple. If you don't like the group, then offer to help in a constructive way or leave. (not intended for anyone in particular).

We have been really excited by the response to our group, so thanks to everyone who has joined and let us know what we can do to make Sci-Lug a group that you look forward to coming to.

Of course, you have to ask yourself if the success is because of the prize money or because of....*shrug*.

I do agree, after reading these replies, that the group's purpose is a tad confusing. You guys kind of seem to lack some communication.

Also, "Anything sci-fi" could find this group simply hosting stuff that has been posted elsewhere already. You should expect to see lots of starfighters.

Just some thoughts. As I posted on CSF, do what you want. The worst that can happen is you'll have a lacking group.

A suggestion, in case you guys are still kind of on the fence about your group theme. I would try to narrow things down a little and choose a niche.

Whatever you do, good luck!

I don't think that every Lego Flickr group has to have a lot of members to be worthwhile. For instance, have a look at my little group (which is still pretty new) if you'd like:
www.flickr.com/groups/912544@N23/

It may only have 15 17 members as of today, but it is still new and I haven;t invited anyone individually since I was worried it might be considered spamming (due to the nature of the group). High numbers of members are not the only consideration when making a judgment about a Flickr Lego group IMHO. There are some quality people in the group including some former and current Lego Ambassadors. :^)

I'm also a bit concerned about the theme portrayed in this group. The group name states SCI-LUG, yet it appears you guys are only accepting Sci-Fi Military MOCs. It isn't at all obvious from the group name.

Also, I agree that a niche theme is best for some groups such as this. For instance:

www.flickr.com/groups/acompany

we're modern/quasi-sci-fi military group, and while it's not obvious in our name, our community has very strict rules and vigilant admins monitoring the sort of content.

In short - change the group name to something that makes more sense.
