Could someone tell me exactly what this is ?

hey corgiflore--it's a sugidama or cedar ball, traditionally hung up in front of a kura (sake brewery) to indicate the sake is ready. you also see them at the entrance of sake drinking establishments in japan--so you know there's some good stuff to be had inside. :) hope that helps.
