The Sailor Chic exhibition at the National Maritime Museum has closed but you can still view some of the collections online – and this photo pool keeps growing.

Group Description

A collection of photos showing fashion and craft influenced by sailors' uniforms, both contemporary and vintage. We're particularly interested in portraits and wardrobe remixes and have been astounded by the number of nautical Blythe dolls. We're also open to pictures of real navy uniforms, if they've directly influenced your creations.

This photo pool was created to accompany the Sailor Chic exhibition at the National Maritime Museum.

Sailor Chic explores the use of nautical styles to express solidarity, patriotism, rebellion and sexuality. This new exhibition links traditional naval uniforms from the National Maritime Museum's collection with more recent reincarnations from contemporary designers including Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Kenzo and John Galliano.

Fashion first took on a nautical twist with the sailor suit as a style essential for affluent children in Victorian England. Today, navy jackets, sailor stripes and epaulettes continue to influence high street fashion. Sailor Chic explores how naval costume became a source of inspiration in popular culture through music, advertising, and on the stage and cinema screen.
