Submit your photo(s) capturing the iconic beauty and diversity of one of America’s rail-trails, and you could be featured in our 2016 Rail-Trail Calendar.
Entry period: July 27 – Aug. 21, 2015 (Contest ends at midnight.)
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is seeking the best photos of rail-trails in the United States. We are looking for photos that capture the diversity of life on and around our nation’s incredible rail-trails. We want to see skylines and mountain ridges; bicyclists and horseback riders; families and pets; waterfronts and windswept prairie; commuter pipelines and pebbly escapes; urban bustle and rural quiet; and a variety of seasons. If the scene moved you to take the photo, then we want to see it.
We’ll choose at least one Grand-Prize-winning photo to be featured in our 2016 30th Anniversary Special-Edition Rail-Trail Calendar. The Grand-Prize winner(s) and two runners-up will receive an RTC Gift Pack, which will include: a 2016 Rail-Trail Calendar, a one-year membership (or membership renewal) to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a bike badge, a Camelbak water bottle, a bottle opener and a Share the Trail sticker.
Winners will be notified via Flickr by Sept. 10, 2015, and announced online and via RTC eNews on or about Sept. 15, 2015.
HOW TO ENTER: Each photo must be submitted electronically, by the following method:

*If you have trouble using Flickr, please consult their online help files, especially regarding joining a group and adding photos to a group. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is not responsible for and cannot provide technical support for any issues or problems you encounter while trying to upload a photo on Flickr.
Please read the following rules, terms and conditions before submitting any photos.
TERMS: Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s Calendar Photo Contest (the "Contest") is open to ALL photographers at least 18 years of age, except employees of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and the immediate families of such employees. The contest is open to all participants regardless of residence or citizenship, as long as the laws of your jurisdiction allow participation. By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and states that he or she is 18 years old or older.
YOUR RIGHTS: You will retain all rights to any photograph you submit—including ownership if applicable—other than those rights licensed in the next sentence. By entering the contest, you hereby grant to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (i) a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display and publicly perform the photographs you submit to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, and (ii) the right to use your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions and other publications. If RTC uses your photo for purposes other than the calendar, it will be credited to your Flickr handle or Flickr account name (if provided). (See “WINNING PHOTOS:” for information on credits for Grand-Prize-winning photos.
WHAT TO ENTER: We are looking for the best digital image of a rail-trail within the United States, but that image may include a broad range of perspectives and subjects. Entries may include, but are not limited to: open landscapes of or around a rail-trail, as long as the photo references the rail-trail; wildlife activity on or recognizably near the rail-trail; people involved in any exercise or activity on or visibly near a rail-trail—fishing, riding horses, kids playing, cycling, inline skating, etc.; urban trail settings—bicycle commuters, kids walking home from school, families pushing strollers or walking dogs, grocery shoppers; and any other image of rail-trail use that captures the personality of a rail-trail and the communities it passes through.
You may submit as many images as you wish for consideration, but you may not use an agency or automated system to enter.
All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared, and have a clear relationship with a rail-trail. Each photo must have a caption that includes the name and location of the rail-trail depicted. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, adjustments to color and contrast, etc.) will be disqualified.
To find the location of a rail-trail near you, visit our trail-finder website, www.traillink.com.
Entrants must not submit images that contain sexually explicit, nude, obscene, violent or other objectionable or inappropriate content, as determined by RTC in its sole discretion; or the willful harassment of people or wildlife; or damage to the environment by the photographer; or that infringe on the rights of any other photographer or person.
If you choose to include people in your submission, you are responsible for obtaining the necessary releases from the individuals depicted and must be able to provide copies of those releases to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy upon request.
Submitted photographs must be the original photograph of the entrant and must be the property of the entrant. Photos must have been taken no more than five years before the date of entry into this contest, and may not have been published previously in exchange for monetary payment.
DEADLINES: All entries must be submitted no later than Aug. 21, 2015. Online entries can be uploaded starting July 27, 2015, and must be uploaded no later than 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) on August 21, 2015.
Entrants may be asked to submit a paragraph about the story behind the photo any time after Aug. 21, 2015. The Grand Prize Winner and runners-up will be announced on the Flickr Contest Page on or before Sept. 15, 2015.
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.
WINNING PHOTOS: At least one Grand-Prize Winner will be chosen.
The Grand Prize Winner will be determined by the judging panel as designated and managed by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. The Grand-Prize Winner's image will be featured in Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s 2016 Calendar as a cover, back or inside cover, a featured month photo or any supporting interior content. An RTC Gift Pack will be awarded to at least one Grand Prize Winner and two runners-up, and will include the following: a 2016 Rail-Trail Calendar, a one-year membership (or membership renewal) to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a bike badge, a Camelbak water bottle, a bottle opener and a Share the Trail sticker. The value of the gift package is $51.50.
All prize-winning photographs will be credited with the caption “Credit: Person's Name." Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has final approval of any language that appears on its website with any of the photos and will not promote or endorse third-party products or services.
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy reserves the right to upload photos submitted through this process to its public group on Flickr.
ELIGIBILITY AND JUDGING: Entries must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi, and landscape orientation at 3,300 x 2,550 pixels to ensure eligibility for the contest. Images that do not meet this standard may or may not be judged at the judging panel's sole discretion.
Entries may originate in any format—including, but not limited to: digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints—as long as they are submitted electronically as a digital file. We will NOT accept hard-copy entries. Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant RTC a license (see "YOUR RIGHTS" above). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously, upon request.
Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. The judges are a panel of Rail-to-Trails Conservancy staff members familiar with photography and responsible for selecting images for various RTC print and online marketing and membership materials.
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final.
The odds of winning are dependent on the number of entries received. This is a skill-based contest, and chance plays no part in the determination of the winners.

YOU HEREBY WAIVE ANY RIGHTS TO HAVE DAMAGES MULTIPLIED OR INCREASED. The Contest and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s website and calendar are provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, either express or implied.
