We have this thread for this. A catch-all thread as long as a shipping company has no separate thread.

Lite Shipping and AMTC/SSF might be big enough to merit their own threads.

I'm sorry if this is a bit off topic or if my question is not connected in this topic. everyone here who knows a roro name RAFFY NANTES? my grandma said she is sailing in the port of real in quezon going to polilio islands and some other ports in bicol. do you have pics of this vessel or the specs of her perhaps?
admin
mbb8356 7 years ago
I just know that is the Dinahican-Polillo connection but i am not sure what kind of vessel that is. But i highly doubt she goes to any Bicol port. Not normal that Polillo island connects to Bicol. It is Jomalig island and Patnanungan that has a connection to Camarines Norte thru Capalonga and J. Panganiban. The vessels there are dual-purpose passenger-cargo motor bancas that carry copra.

The vessel which is the topic is named after a pol. Was that the vessel connected with a big shabu bust?
Ft. 98 Rangero [deleted] 7 years ago
oh. that's right she always sail to dinahican polilio as what my grandma told me. tnx for the info. any pics of her?

Sorry, none. One of the few ferries we have no picture of. Nobody here has covered Dinahican for PSSS yet. Hope you can go there and shipspot;).

I've been on capalonga on camarines norte. that was when i was a kid pa. don't you worry sir mike. if i my leave for work has been approved i will go there. bicol and batangas port. but for now i'm only shipspotting in manila ports.

alright. so what do you think she's doing out there? shes near in navotas fish port and she's docked there.

Drydocking? They used Navotas shipyards for drydocking in the past. But this is speculation on my part. They do not have a Manila route.
Ft. 98 Rangero [deleted] 7 years ago
oh i see. and a fastcraft is also there? looks like a former NN angels. and there is a negros navigation building there. is their former port before?

I am really interested now about this M/V Raffy Nantes. a friend of mine who did experience ride her told me that she is one of the biggest small ferries in polilio.

Based on the web, M/V Raffy Nantes was owned by the former governor Mr. Raffy Nantes who was perished due to a chopper incident. he was a great governor, a great politician and a successful business man in his time.

My friend told me that the vessel is a little bit scary when she encounters big waves plus the bad smell of copras in her stern area ( it seems like her cargo deck. )

Another info from my friend, there's 2 big companies that competes in shipping business. one is Mr. Raffy Nantes at ipinangalan nya sa mga anak nya ang mga ferries including his name. their routes are Polilio to Mauban, Mauban to Polilio and Mauban to bordeos.

( To all polilianos out there, you might want to share your knowledge and experiences with these ferries. and please correct me if i'm wrong. )
admin
mbb8356 7 years ago
This Mauban route is new to my ears. But it makes a lot of sense. as in the past people of Polillo will have to go via Laguna first to reach Lucena their capital.

Now here is a route that is a good alternate to the road which loops a long way. Same came why the Mukas route clicked. But in many cases the Gloria government will make an alternate route where the land vehicle and the ferry can just see each other. The ferry can never win against the bus or jeep. Like in Dingalan. Well the ferry can't even win against the bus in Bataan. And so the PPA will refurbish more ports to Bataan. Coz their line of reasoning is if there are more ports then the ferry will come. And the COA will find that the revenues will not even cover the utilities and security.

That is also the case of the Davao Oriental ports.

Now it seems this Mauban-polillo route is a winner even without the fanfare.
Ft. 98 Rangero [deleted] 7 years ago
Mauban is a first class city in Quezon province.

by the way, my friend told me that M/V Raffy Nantes is sold now and they don't know to whom dahil matagal na raw itong wala dun sa regular route nya. i ask about his remaining fleets. hindi rin nila sure kung active pa yung iba. i really hope someone from polilio shares to us the histories of this ferries.

Seems to me Palacio Shipping is almost phasing itself out of business. That is their 2 biggest ships. The first one is the "Calbayog" (formerly Asia Singapore and Don Martin Sr. 9) and the second one is "Don Martin Sr. 8". If they sell "Calbayog" will that mean closing their Calbayog route. It will be DMS6 that will be left manning the Plaridel route or will they use that ship once each week in their 2 remaining routes? Even in Plaridel they will be soon under siege from Lite Shipping. In Calbayog they reeled from Cokaliong.

Is P70 million the price of the 2 ships. It cant be one as it will be too high.

This is almost like the passing of an era again. i doubt if those ships can really be sold at those prices and conditions. Palacio ships are even less-maintained than competition.

Maybe Roble would be interested in them? Or Lite perhaps?
admin
mbb8356 7 years ago
Roble has still the laid-up Ormoc Stars and Joyful Stars still not joyful.

Lite bought 5 ferries last year. Wonder if they broke or tied Montenegro's record of most purchases in one year. And i think their source of fund might have dried up also like MSLI and SSF. No more laundry machine business.

CSLI and TASLI won't be interested in that. Aleson would probably not go for it. G&P has just purchased one and they are not that strong.

Maybe they should just apply CSLI standards?

Montenegro Shipping Acquires Ro-Ro Vessel
February 25, 2012, 2:12pm

MANILA, Philippines — Montenegro Shipping Lines, Inc. (MSLI) has recently acquired a second-hand roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel from South Korea for P86 million under a lease agreement with the DBP Leasing Corp. (DLC).

DLC vice president for leasing and corporate services Ricardo Romero and DLC vice president for shipping operations Ronilo Bacolod turned over the MV Maria Lolita to MSLI after completing the five-year lease contract.

MV Maria Lolita is one of the four Ro-Ro vessels acquired by MSLI under the DLC lease financing scheme.

The three other second-hand Ro-Ro vessels are MV Maria Natasha which sails between Batangas City and Calapan City; MV Maria Oliva, plying the Roxas, Mindoro-Catiklan, Aklan route and the MV Reina Divina Gracia plying the Lucena City-Balanacan, Marinduque route.

Montenegro Lines, which operates 31 ships, have been serving the Filipinos for almost three decades with four vessels transporting goods from one island to another.

Meanwhile, with the expansion of scope of its leasing activities, DLC has recently approved the lease application for a second-hand container by Meridian Cargo Forwarders, Inc. (MCFI).

The three-year lease contract has a total project cost of P151 million.

MV Rachel has a maximum capacity of 256 units of 20-foot containers and would be deployed in the developmental route between Manila and Puerto Princesa in Palawan. (EHL)

RE Lite Ferry 11:

I have recently sailed with that ship and frankly i was not impressed even if that is one of the newest ships of Lite Ferries. Seems there is connivance between their ticket issuers and the crew. So the crew can "hire out" mattresses and shoehorn passengers who failed to get tourist tickets into the tourist section but occupy the floor.

And i really wonder about an overnight ship which uses "sitting economy". The rate is P390/seat (Ormoc-Cebu) while the "lying economy is" is P400. If that is not shortchanging i don't know what is. And the seats are either wooden seats or fiberglass bucket seats.

I have not ridden a lot of Lite ships but i noticed their aircon are always on the anemic side as in kulang ng lamig.

On the way back i rode the Wonderful Stars of Roble, one of their competitors in the route. I can say LF11 can't hold a candle to the Wonderful Stars. Amenities are simply far superior and it has a proper restaurant (compared to the biscuits and instant noodles of LF11). And the fare is just the same.

If they can't match the Roble ship i am very sure the more they can't handle Cebu Ferry 2.

Something in this photo caught my eye:

MQP docked at Pier 4 by rad_meltdown

(Please see my note.)

Is that the current Super Shuttle Ferry 15? If so, why is she in Pier 6, North Harbor near the Moreta vessels? Did she serve under Moreta too aside from being an Atienza vessel (as Joy Ruby)?
admin
mbb8356 6 years ago
No, she was sold by Viva direct to Atienza and from Atienza she was sold to SSF. However by that time Atienza was domiciled already in IPB (from Puerto Galera).
MOD
roverken 6 years ago
So the ship in the above photo is a possible sister?
admin
mbb8356 6 years ago
That could be Joy-Ruby of Atienza which later became SSF15. Actually i will not be surprised if Joy-Ruby was seen in NH.

Actually the question is did she ply a Manila-San Jose or Manila-Coron or a Manila-Puerto Princesa route?

Because when she met her accident as Joy-Ruby ( grounding/wrecking incident a ship length from the wharf) it was in Puerto Princesa port.

These are the years i don't take a Manila ship anymore to go to Bicol and i have stopped going to/thru Manila.
admin
mbb8356 6 years ago
To Raymond:

Did Atienza ever try a Batangas-Puerto Princesa route? What was the reason why Joy-Ruby was in Puerto Princesa when she met her accident?
MOD
fangedboy8 Posted 6 years ago. Edited by fangedboy8 (moderator) 6 years ago
@Sir Mike: There was no Batangas-Pto. Princessa route served by Joy Ruby back then. The only routes served were Batangas-Calapan & v.v. and Batangas-San Jose, Occ. Mdo.

With respect to the photo of the tickets in my photostream, MV Joy-Ruby was in Batangas during the fourth quarter of 2006. Another related photo of her (as advertisement at San Jose, Occ. Mdo.) is found on this link:

MV Joy-Ruby by homma5433

It could be possible that she plied Manila-Coron-Pto. Princessa route before that as shown in radmeltdown's photo that was pointed-out earlier by Ken.

mbb8356 6 years ago
I guess this thread should be reformatted. AMTC has its own thread and so do MSLI. We also have a thread named "Cebu shipping companies". Maybe Lite Ferries deserve their own thread. After all they are even bigger than the likes of Roble which has its own thread.

I wonder if a dedicated thread on defunct Cebu shipping companies is needed. To keep their memories alive. Their number is piling up -- Maypalad, Rose, Palacio, Roly and earlier the likes of San Juan, Western Samar Shipping Lines, Georgia, etc. Some of their ships are still extant and is in our pool.

What do members think?

A scion of Viva Shipping Lines. Another scion said they are on the comeback trail. Might be Starhorse Shipping and the ship could be a Virgen de Penafrancia now.

Wonder if they will sail the Lucena-Romblon route.
Irvine Kinea 6 years ago
Anyone know or heard a vessel name PINOY RORO? They said she is owned by Starhorse shipping and was built by navotas and they told me that she's somewhere in a navotas shipyard. I tried to look at the possible places near the river of course dividing the navotas and malabon but failed to find her.

, - They got bankrupt? What happened to Asia Japan, Calbayog, and to the others excluding the two Don Martins (6 and 8)?

Is M/V Ormoc Star scrapped already?
Jeth! 5 years ago
- Asia Japan never became a part of the FJP fleet and was sold to a company named Keywest Shipping. She is currently docked at one of the Cansaga shipyards, awaiting a refit.

- Calbayog has been sold to Starlite Ferries, she is now the Starlite Neptune.

- DMSR6 was reportedly sold to Starhorse Shipping, her new name is still unknown.

- DMSR8 has already been broken up.

- Ormoc Star is still anchored in Mactan Channel, her fate is still uncertain.
