CLOSED PHOTO CONTEST: Dramatic Moments in every day Life

Upon looking over the photos in our group's Pool and partially inspired by Michael's post, I thought it would be nice to feature the photographic talents of our members.

Naturally, all of our members like to work in Lightroom but not all of them have presets to share. However, they do utilize one or more presets in the fine works that they produce. So in keeping with the theme I would ask that people post their BEST photo in this post. To do so, scroll down and add your photo link and details in the "Reply to this topic?" box. (It's ok, you can't break anything and can edit your own reply anytime later.)

Photos should be posted in the medium size and be tagged with TWO tags be be eligible for the contest. Please tag your photos with "PresettingLR" and "Contest0209".

You may enter your BEST photo in the contest - deadline for submission is Feb. 28, 2009 (that's a Saturday). If you submit a photo and then want to submit a second photo, no problem, just remember to delete your first entry! Failure to do so will mean only your most recent submission is eligible for the contest.

Please, also indicate which Lightroom preset you used and most importantly why?

Here's an example of a contest entry.

Wet Snow in Munich
Title: Wet Snow in Munich
Preset Used: Focus> Vintage B&W
Why: While visiting Munich, I exited the subway and was greeted with this scene. It had just started to snow those large wet flakes that make for a miserable walking experience. This lady was probably happy that she was just moments away from the underground refuge of the subway. I played around with a number of color enhancements but in the end I opted for an old time vintage black and white treatment. It just brought out the atmosphere more!
Notes: This is a newly developed preset, not released yet, but allows you much more control over the vignetting effect.
---------------------------------------------------

Voting will take place from Mar. 1-10 and each member can vote for three photos. Do so by listing the title of your favorite three photos in your preferred order. (ex. 1. Mama's Girl, 2. Bozo the Clown, 3. Spring Fever)

Let's see if this will spark up some lively discussions/interactions between members here!

Winning photos will be assembled into a Flash Photo Gallery and either displayed here (if this is possible) or via an outside Flickr service.

Cheers, Markus

P.S. Don't forget the TWO tags on your photo (will be required for the Flash gallery)

1. PresettingLR
2. Contest0209

Okay so I felt we needed some prizes for this, maybe get some interest going. Title: untitled
Preset Used: NYSM
Why: I developed the NYSM preset for this image. On my first trip (and only) to NYC I was there on business. I worked for a design firm and we went there to get inspiration from the city. One thing that I quickly noticed is that everyone wears black and white clothes. On top of this everything has this grey color to it. The buildings, the street, the sidewalk; yet everywhere you go there is this intense pop of color somewhere. The yellow taxis, purple accents, bright red awnings, green green grass (in the parks). All the advertisements where extremely bright and colorful. Fashion focused around black suits with a bright color accent (tie or scarf).

So I built this preset that drops the color saturation, adds some vibrancy to colors and emphasis bright colors, all trying to maintain an analog perspective with cool shadows and warm highlights.

Title: I control the Universe
Preset: Kelsey Smith
Why: I realy didn't want to do a traditional colour pop because the top was already bright red and blue and I didn't want to wash it so Kelseys preset was perfect.

Excuse my ignorance but how do I get the photo large like you guys have it??

Hi floxyloxy, I've helped out this time. Basically, you go into all sizes for the photo, click on medium link (you should see a medium version of photo appear) and then cut the code in the box into your entry. To see what the code looks like, click on the blue edit text under your entry and see what it looks like now.

It's always better to paste the HTML code when you go into all sizes. See post about 3 and 4 up in this thread.

It's also a good idea to give your photo a title so that someone can vote for it at the close of the contest.

Hey Markus,
I have a huge problem. As you know that I am a photographer and I am very poor with captions but in other way. I am good with the presets as I've learned myself how to create the presets. The reason why I said about the captions is because I cant hear and am not too good in putting the captions. I would love to enter the photo contest myself.
Two years ago I enrolled my photo into the AUSA (ARMY Magazine Photo Contest) and I won 3rd place.
Let me know what should I do with the captions. Your help will greatly appericate that much.

Hi Reddy,

We'd love to have your photo in the contest. I'm guessing by "captions" you are referring to "tags" as in tagging your photograph. No problem, submit the photo and I'll help you with the rest. If I've misunderstood what you meant by "captions" can you please elaborate.

Hi again, am trying to send my photo to you but I do not remeber how I had done it before. Hope that you can help me as I think you will like my picture. Do I need a caption for my picture? The question I had asked about was the "Tags" which according to the instructions are required; but I am not too good at such things as Tags or Captions. I am good at taking pictures since I've been doing that for almost 29 years; but although I have eyes to see, I am unable to hear.

Hi Reddy,

As I said, I can help you with the Tags. Upload your photo to your Flickr photostream and then click on the photo which will take you to the section where you will see an option "All Sizes". Click on that and then click on the Medium link. Below you will see some codes. Copy those into a new Reply in this thread. The rest I will help you with when you've got the photo posted.

Title: Thoughts
Preset Used: HDR
Why: While walking around with my daughter, she sat on this bench and started to thing about something; surely kids thoughts for sure. I got my K10D around my neck and shoot this moment as fast as I could. The result's not bad for me, so I share this photo with all of us for this contest.

"He wants what!?!"
Title: "He wants what!?!"
Preset Used: Wonderland: Color Isolate Red
Why: This Dramatic Moment occured as I was sitting in an open air cafe in Hanoi, Vietnam. I was just mooching around, pot shotting around Hoan Kiem Lake and decided to stop in for a coffee. While watching the passing parade, this woman in the kiosk started waving this knife at the waitress, what else could I do? I took the shot.

I wanted to enhance the sence of drama in this image and the Wonderland preset did a great job at keeping the orange colours whilst losing the skin tones and desaturating everything else. A few additional localised exposure adjustments and a brief play with the Treatment Sliders, then off to PS for matting, labeling and borders.

So, here is is, I hope you like it.

Hang On

Title: Hang On!
Preset Used:SarahJi -->Schwinnbreeze (slightly tweaked)
Why:Moto-Cross/Enduro racing is a fast, rough sport where each race feels like a battle against the weather, other riders and your own body. The Schwinnbreeze preset gave the action shot a de-saturated, eye catching look which created an almost "battlefield" look and feel to the shot. This rider, trying to hang on to his bike as he navigated a water crossing, was one of my best of the day and I felt truly captured the explosive drama of the afternoon.

Title: New Mexico Rain Storm
Preset Used: Color Pop
Why: This is a photo I took during one of the fabulous New Mexico thunderstorms that I grew up with. The earth almost seems to shake from the thunder, lightning and rain which pours for only a few minutes until the sky clears for a lovely high desert sunset.
Notes: Lots of saturation, with a full recovery, high blacks and a high vibrance.

Sabrina & Fall Color

Title: Fall Fun

Presets Used (in order): Focus> Dark Skies (Land), PH Colorize my Autumn vignettes, Golden Vintage medium

Why: Original photo was taken on an overcast day and the colors were quite flat.

Reasons for the presets: Dark Skies; darkened the top portion of the photo directing your attention to Sabrina. Colorize my Autumn; added vignette and brightened the color of the leaves. Golden Vintage Medium; removed the orange hue on her skin and brightened the yellow shirt. How did I arrive at this combination?; Just experimenting with newly downloaded presets and stumbled into it.

Title: You Are Being Watched
Preset: Daguerreotype by LifeInDigitalFilm

You are being watched

This was shot somewhere in the Blue Mountains just out of Sydney. If anybody knows where it is please let me know.

Shot using an old Canon C120 (2.1 meg), you don't need a great camera to get good shots. Processed jpeg in Camera Raw using a Daguerreotype preset, and Photoshop to add noise.

I found that using the Daguereotype preset not only did it give the look I was after with minimal efort but it also draged out much more detail in and through the mist which other's wouldn't.

Focal length at 4.2 gives great distortion, and with the frame of the tree and the vingetting that daguerreotype adds helps to add interest to the shot.

Presets Used (my own preset): Grayscale; Split Toning (H: 48,75) (Bal:-7) (S:236,68) + Vignette -100

Why: To create a old atmosphere.

Reasons for the presets: It's a rainy day in Santiago/Cuba..when I going to streets looking for a Color Contrast ..i just saw to much gray..but Cuba is Cuba that a lot of meanings and feelings..at this time I felt the Old Times..no big ADs, old cars, to quiet...a little journey in the time.

Faceless Masses (by demosthien)

Title: Faceless Masses
Preset Used: Old Time Look w Vignette - Lightroom Killer Tips
Why: I took this photo on the Champs-Elysees in Paris while on holiday (on a nice sunny day actually). I couldn't help feeling the lady would have very little luck in this affluent location. "Faceless masses" is a term that is normally used to describe homeless people. I was trying to show with this image that it is not just the homeless that are faceless. I deliberately chose to blur the passers-by in order to show this. The preset allowed me to really push the contrast up and made the image much harder, darker and more depressing.

Man On Pier

Title: Man On Pier
Preset Used: Kodak TMax 100 Auto
Why: I chose this preset because it confirms the essence of that dreary day in Germany. The pier extending out to a faint horizon gives the feeling that one has come to the end of the road, that nothing is left. The man at the end of the pier is alone, the way I felt that day. However, he is returning which gives hope that the next day will bring happiness.

to answer your question we live in a world with millions of people, of which we are just a few. It also happens to be a very good shot and moody.
