Group Description

This site is dedicated to the class 201 - 207 Diesel Electric Multiple Units of the Southern railway that have been saved from being scrapped and are now in preservation. From 1957 until 2004 these units were the workhorses of the non - electrified passenger routes of the Southern Railway. Resented by some as they replaced steam locomotives; but loved by others due to their reliability and shorter journey times, they certainly divide opinion. What cannot be argued is that after 42 - 47 years service, they fulfilled their "short term" objective of providing passenger services until all lines were electrified, axed or new stock was provided.
