Group DescriptionThe Port of Liverpool Police is a small, specialist, non-Home Office police force with the responsibility of policing the Liverpool, Bootle, Birkenhead, Ellesmere Port and Eastham Dock Estates and Freeports. The force also has the policing responsibility of the Manchester Ship Canal area. The force was formed on 19 June 1975 under The Mersey Docks and Harbour Police Order, making the force the youngest in the country, however origins can be traced back over 200 years.
Police officers of the force have all the powers of a regular Home Office constable whilst on the 70-square-mile (180 km2) area of the jurisdiction and up to 1-mile (1.6 km) outside of it. There are about 40 Police Officers in the force including senior management, administration and C.I.D.
Officers in this force wear similar uniforms to their colleagues in other forces throughout the country, including the familiar helmet of British police constables. All personal officer protection equipment is also carried by constables including CS spray.
