Post directly from Picasa 2 to Flickr

Some nice people have made an application that allows you to upload directly from Picasa 2 to Flickr at the press of a button. I tried it and it seems to work well.

Picasa2Flickr can be found at:

picasa2flickr.sourceforge.net/

It seems to be Windows only at present but for someone like myself who uses Picasa to manage my photos, it's a great little app.

Gaël Chardon says:

In fact the uploadr is only needed since Google has blocked Java calls from picasa. Thus we need to use the flickr uploadr to bypass this "security" feature.

See: picasa2flickr.sourceforge.net/install_v2.html

Gaël Chardon says:

For Windows users the picasa2flickr button uses two params to locate the flickr uploadr application:

param name="exe_name" value="Flickr Uploadr.exe"
param name="exe_path_regkey" value="HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Flickr Uploadr\"

These two params should be updated for MAX OS X env.....
But the google documentation does not give us much information about it

Thx to B. Quorning I have "released" a new version that should work under Mac OS X. This version uses a new parameter called bundleid, see code.google.com/intl/fr/apis/picasa/docs/button_api.html

Mac users can simply copy & past the following URL into a browser:
picasa://importbutton/?url=http://picasa2flickr.4now.net/picasa2flickr_install_v4.pbz

Before updating the website page I would appreciate some feedback from Mac users ...

@Gael:

Any luck with Picasa2Flickr using Picasa 3 for Linux (Ubuntu 8.10)? The button doesn't seem to be working for me.

Thanks in advance.

@poznanov

It almost work under Linux :(

I've made the following test under ubuntu (virtualbox image)

1/ install picasa3 (apt repository)
2/ install the last version of picasa2flickr button via the website
3/ Quit picasa
4/ Copy the win32 version of Flickr Uploadr from a XP/Vista friend (C:\Program Files\Flickr Uploadr) into your "google wine" home directory: /home/USERNAME/.google/picasa/3.0/drive_c/Program Files
5/ patch your picasa user.reg (/home/USERNAME/.google/picasa/3.0/user.reg) by adding two lines
[Software\\Flickr Uploadr] 1233234811
@="C:\\Program Files\\Flickr Uploadr"
6/ start picasa .. select photos and click on picasa2flickr ..
Flickr Uploadr will start ... but it's very slow !!! (XUL+wine=slow, I think)

But ... it seems that the paths provided by picasa is not correctly handled by Flickr Uploadr.

I will retry with a version where the button export value is 0.

Gaël Chardon says:

Ok so It works (but it's slow) if you disable the "export" option in the button.
So you have to manually edit the pbf file located inside the pbz file (it's a zip file) and replace:
<param name="export" value="1"/> by <param name="export" value="0"/>

I'm on Mac OSX 10.4.11, picasa2flickr_install_v4, latest version of Picasa and Flickr Uploadr.

The photos are sent to Flickr Uploadr fine, but the tags and captions are not going. Anyone else can get that to work?

I can't get picasa2flickr to work with Ubuntu 8.10.

I've done everything mentioned by Gael Chardon above (btw in step 5/ there was already an entry for [Software\\Flickr Uploadr] and I just had to add the line starting with @ below it), but I can't get beyond the authorization stage - it seems like it doesn't manage to launch a browser to display the authorization page.

Any suggestions?

Not sure if this is an unrelated problem, but I've downloaded v3 of the button for Picasa 3.6 on Windows, clicking the button now present in Picasa doesn't seem to do anything... am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for any advice!

gael great work on this. i installed it and it worked like a charm.

now if we could some how link face-tagging in picasa to the person tag in flickr.... but I imagine that's a tough one due to the lack of uniformity in the info on people across platforms

anyway thanks again

This was a really big help to me. For some reason Photo Gallery does not accept the edits I do in Picasa. When I have been uploading to Flickr the images in Photo Gallery are selected instead of the edited photos I've completed in Picasa. As a solution, I tried editing in Photo Gallery. But, the results were disappointing. It became pretty frustrating not being able to get my edits from Picasa since they were so much better. This app saved the day. It is a little tricky. But, with some work I am sure I can figure it out. Thanks eikona and Gael. Really appreciate it.

Ecostore Belfast says:

The problem with the previous poster was that he was not selecting 'Save' on his edited pics. Picasa doesn't overwrite the original (which is a good thing) until you do this (and it keeps a backup), but can cause issues like this, usually because you forget to Save. Another way around is the Export the pics.

P.S. The reason I'm on this thread is because the button doesn't work for me either.
