Jason Drury, originally of Whitehorse, YT, is a graduate of the University of British Columbia, Okanagan, in Kelowna, B.C. with a degree in Human Geography. Influenced by his studies in Human Geography, Jason is interested in the way we talk about and represent landscape, and the ways in which landscapes of production once valued for their natural resources have become landscapes of consumption, valued for their aesthetic qualities.

Jason captured this winter sunrise on the Alaska Highway in Northern British Columbia, just south of Watson Lake, Yukon, using a Pentax K-x with a 10-20 mm F3.5 lens, shooting at 1/25 second and f/13 at ISO 400. The resulting RAW file was edited with Photoshop Lightroom and Nik Software Color Efex Pro.

"Winter Wonderland"

The PHOTO News Challenge for Winter 2011/2012 is to celebrate the beauty of the winter season.

The topic is open to a range of interpretations - you may shoot landscapes, winter activities, or seasonal events, and images from past winters are welcome. If you fly south to escape the snow, your perspective on the "winter wonderland" theme may be quite a bit warmer.

Please note that shooting in cold weather requires freshly charged batteries - and shooting toward the sun may result in underexposure - turn the camera slightly to meter the scene without the sun in the frame, use the exposure lock feature on your camera, then recompose the image and take the picture.

To participate in the PHOTO News Challenge, please post a 600 pixel wide version of your entry in this thread – please include your name, your location, a description of how you took the photograph, and why you feel it is a special image. The photo pool at our flickr® group will also be used to select images for our Reader’s Gallery – so take a look, sign in, post a few of your favourite photos, and enjoy our interactive photographic adventures!

The PHOTO News Winter Challenge will run from December 4, 2011 through January 15, 2012.

You may post three images per week to the challenge thread.

Happy Holidays - enjoy the winter season!

DSC_4956 A taste of winter!!

I had taken this picture no a road trip with my wife to Waterton Park in Nov 2011 on what was supposed to be a sunny weekend, not so predictable in the Mounting parks in November, we had taken a drive up the parkway and the higher up we went the worst the whether got, or should I say the better the landscape got. This was not the picture I had stop for and did not see this until I put the wind to my back, with the blowing snow and running water and fresh snow falling on the trees it just looked like a Christmas card winter wonderland.

This may not be a great shot but it is one of my favourites. We were just driving along a back road to avoid traffic and I spotted the bike. Of course, I said "pull over, pull over" It had just snowed and the wind did not have a chance..yet...to ruin the shot.

Georgetown, Ontario - Canada

I made a point of going out to shoot more often in inclement weather. Bringing an umbrella allowed me to set up wherever I pleased. I liked the isolated look and feel to the scene. The person on the road (the sidewalks were a lessor option at the time) added some human interest and scale.

I loved the silence created when all the harsh surfaces in town got padded.

Snowy Owl

Image made with a Canon 30D; 500mm f4 L IS Lens @ 500mm; f4; 1/2500; ISO 100.

My first encounter with this beautiful northern visitor! While we spotted this owl a long ways out in a farmer's field east of Ottawa, Ontario; we decided to try and walk out to it. Approaching slowly; stopping every so often to take a few shots; then moving forward in a zig-zag fashion to try to get a little closer.
The owl was quite tolerant; until another photographer walked straight into the area (Like he was on a mission); and spooked the owl.
I held the shutter down and managed a few decent images as it left the area..
An encounter that I hope to repeat some day soon.

winter sun

There is nothing like bright sun and blue sky on a cold winter day. Presented with these conditions on a trip to Toronto last winter, I headed to the lake at Bluffers Park to capture the scene along the frozen shoreline. When shooting into the sun it's always a challenge to control flare, but in this image, I think the flare conveys the intense brightness of conditions that day.

A trip up the Bruce Peninsula to Tobermory between Christmas and the New Year is becoming an annual event that I look forward to. "Surprised by the Light"

Surprised by the Light

A few weeks ago our only real snowfall so far occurred. It was the typically grey, cloudy, snowy day, but I had pulled over on the road and trekked into the woods to get some winter frosting shots. All of sudden the most beautiful, low, directional light broke from the evening clouds, illuminating the evergreens and rimlighting the fresh snow. I happily shot away...

-20C morning on a rural road - Brrrrrrr!

This may not be the best winterscape I've done, however, it s the one for which I have the fondest memory. A few friends and I had braved the -20C cold to shoot the Bay des Chaleur coast back in the 80's, and on the way, we stoped on this rural road at 7:30 AM and I was struck by the light and share starkness of the moment. It was a particularly blustery day in February when I wen out to see if I could get some blowing snow photos. I found a concession road where the snow was blowing across it but decided the visibility was too bad to risk being out of the car to take photos. I was heading for home when I saw this bus coming toward me, coming in and out of white-outs. I stopped and took this shot out of the front window of the car. It may not have been the shot I was looking for, but to me it speaks volumes of the challenges of living rural and carrying on with the daily routine of life, despite the weather.

Home for Christmas by LennoxC

On Christmas day 2008, while hiking in Todd Inlet near the Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, I captured this image of a woman being pulled in a rowboat towards a sailboat frozen in the ice. Minutes before taking this shot, she had fallen out of the boat into the icy waters, getting one leg completely soaked. She told me she was waiting for her husband to pull her towards the sailboat where they arranged to have Christmas dinner together.

This image evokes memories of the frozen pond in Toronto's High Park, where my friends and I used to play as kids.

This was taken in Glenbow Provincial Park, just east of Cochrane, Alberta. We were the first to go for a walk this morning, white, fluffy snow-gorgeous.

I was on my way to Glenbow Provincial Park and looked to the east-the cloud formation looked like a Chinook, and sure enough it was very mild. It looked cold though.

Taken in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Just as I was about to give up for the day I spotted him by the side of the road. He flew up high on a tree and I waited for to fly off hoping I got a good shot. I was pretty happy with this one

Bohemian Waxwing

I photographed this Bohemian Waxwing last spring while him and his buddies bombarded my Mountain Ash tree. They are so quick when they eat! When they are in a feeding frenzy I stand under and/or beside the tree to get the best light and background. After a few minutes they don't even care that I am within 5 feet of them....but you have to be fast...

Snowy owl
I’ve been trying to find and photograph this Snowy owl for over a month but without success. On my 5th trip to an area about an hour outside of Ottawa I finally spotted him and spent about 5 hours following him around an area covering about 3 square miles. Standing in the middle of an open field with the wind howling in your face and temperatures hovering around -10 with windchill of -20 was well worth it. Winter Walk

My wife and I were out walking the shore ice along the Great lake Huron in a light snow storm. I spotted a family enjoying themselves in the distance and just had to capture the snow and the moment.

Snow Angel by jimmy brown

snow angel

I spotted this fallen snow angel in my hometown of Petrolia , Ontario, Canada. It rested on the snow in the small cemetery there. I used my D700 to capture this moment with my 24 - 70 mm lens set at 70mm. I used spot metering and +2/3 EV . Even though damaged the angel seemed at peace with the world and that makes this photo special to me.

Winter morning sunrise on Koshlong Lake, near Haliburton Ontario. Two months of the year, this beach is a summer camp. The rest of the year it is an outdoor education centre. People who come to camp only in the summer months have no idea how beautiful it is in other seasons. Its wonderful!
