PN 20-1 Final Frame

Our PHOTO News Challenge for Spring 2011 is “Walk on the Wild Side!” – a theme that lends itself to a wide variety of interpretations.

Look for subjects that depict the Canadian wilderness - you may focus on flora, fauna, or family fun in the great outdoors. The theme lends itself to a wide variety of interpretations, so let your imagination "run wild" and take lots of pictures!

You may find inspiration in the thread on two-flash marco photography - wildlife comes in a wide range of sizes!

To participate please post small versions of your photos in digital format, no larger than 600 pixels wide, to this PHOTONews Gallery flickr® Group Spring 2011 Challenge thread.

Images from previous spring seasons are welcome.

The contest will run from March 7, 2011 to May 1, 2011.

PLEASE LIMIT YOUR ENTRIES TO THREE IMAGES PER WEEK.

Please include a description of the image (what it is, where you took the picture, why you like the shot) including the type of camera and lens that you used, shutter speed, aperture, ISO setting, and any special technique that helped you create the photograph.

The PHOTO News Gallery flickr® group will also be used to collect submissions for the Reader’s Gallery in each issue – please post your images to the pool, and we will contact you if one of your photos is selected for publication in the magazine!

Enjoy photographing Canada in the springtime!

Snowdrop 7102e by Harris Hui (in search of light)

Taken with Fuji S3 Pro and Nikon 105mm macro lens.
ISO 400 F8.0 1/250 second on tripod.
This is not exactly something from wilderness but the snowdrop did show the color of early spring.
It is taken in Queen Elizabeth Park Vancouver.

The Least Bittern is a shy species, difficult to see let alone photograph. Its amazing how it moves around in the marsh just the way its feet appear by crasping the reeds almost like its walking on stilts. After waiting a couple of hours it appeared in the marsh at Presqu'ile Provincial Park in Brighton Ontario.

Moose cow and calves

Not only was I fortunate to see this moose cow and her calves, but even more so when she let me watch and photograph her family. The mother watched me the whole time (I was on a small cliff across the stream from them), and eventually both calves became curious about the "clicking" noises and looked my way as well. It's like they posed for a family portrait!

Robin in Snow 2

SW Ontario started to get some spring weather, then we got another snow and ice storm Tuesday night. I just happened to catch this chilly looking robin in sitting in a snow covered tree in my yard a few minutes ago.

Taken with Canon Rebel T1i. Driving on the highway towards Banff, there's a ton of cars stopped on the side of the road, then we see about 20 mountain goats! I just had to get a picture!

Raccoon

I took this photo in Oakville, ON last fall – this little guy was pretty hidden but I spotted him when I was biking by. I couldn't get a clear view of him and kept having to time my shots with the wind. I like that some of the foreground foliage really helped smooth and blur some of the colour.

Master of stealth

We saw this distant Coyote while walking in Fish Creek Park, Calgary. A second one joined this one and they both headed uphill towards the residential area. I rather liked the pattern and texture of the trees in the background.

Mushrooms are one of my favourite subjects to photograph. Always a challenge, partly because of the lack of light in the forest and also because they are so low down on the ground. I used a Raynox DCR-250 for this image, as the mushroom caps were maybe quarter of an inch in length ; )

Much Rejoicing

This bench is along a walkway between the English Gardens and the Leo Mol Sculpture Gardens in Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg. The view changes with the seasons, but this is what it looked like last spring. Everything around it was in full bloom, and I was reminded of the quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, that the 'Earth laughs in flowers'.

Taken in Verner Ontario at 7:30 in the morning. It was a very cold morning (-18) and everything was coated with a heavy frost. Just as I was pouring a cup of coffee I looked outside and saw this amazing sunsize that had me running outside in my slippers to capture the moment and the "double rainbow".

The snow and frost-covered trees made me think I was walking in an alternate reality or walking on the moon due to the very unusual lighting.

This photo was taken on the Ottawa River on a beautiful windy sunday morning. I took a break from snowkiting to get some photos of a friend of mine who always loves to "take a walk on the wild side".

In this particular shot he is jumping over the snow-covered rocks to put on a show for the camera. I'm always a little nervous until he lands safely without breaking gear or bones!

This is another photo taken on the Ottawa River at sunrise on a beautiful windy sunday morning.

My friend who always loves to "take a walk on the wild side" is rotating mid-air over the ice. Even though he is wearing a helmet and padding, it really hurts when he crashes.
