Weekend assignment August 25, 2006: Portraits

view profile

fd says:

The weekend assignment is a weekly (well, that's the plan) prod to get out there on the weekend and put into practice what you’ve been reading about. The idea is simple: reading about technique is pointless without practice. My hope is that the weekend assignment will not only help you improve your photography but also give you some creative ideas to focus on each weekend to help you make fresh images.

Read this weekend's assignment.

Two candids taken in line for Expedition Everest in Disney World. It was very hard to pull these off discreetly given the close proximity. I'm pretty pleased with the result. :)

As much as I would like to, I *never* take pictures of people. But last weekend I discovered that taking pictures of kids is much easier than adults. This child was already so used to having the camera pointed at her, and in fact she loved it and kept posing and then coming back to see the image in review on the camera display. Other times she just ran around and played and didn't seem at all concerned about my camera. It was so much fun!

I almost NEVER get to take pictures of people... Everyone seems to get camera-shy, and my fiance gets PISSED when a lens is even REMOTELY pointed at her... So... That being said, I was pretty happy to get these over the past few days..

I think it's a good picture of him, but he's your typical ten year-old boy--Tamagotchi around his neck and holding a wood dowel he found somewhere.

I was practicing my Strobist skills, and it worked well for this assignment too.

More of a random shot while playing with a new lens than a planned portrait.

Chilling

This kid was playing around with his little sister as we were trying to hitch a lift out of Ya Ding, Tibet. Couldn't help snapping a couple of shots - both of these are uncropped and uneditted.

Window cat

This is Victor. It may be impossible to pose a cat for a portrait, but open a window and you know exactly where he's going to be.

I love these. I especially like that several of you shot portraits when you normally don't. Great shots, everybody!

I really dislike taking pictures of people-It makes me uncomfortable-I worry abouth what the person thinks about themselves, how the look, etc. I enjoy viewing these shots greatly though. So, I'm glad that others take such wonderful portrait shots~

I can understand that. A lot of people are self-conscious about being photographed and it's important for photographers to have empathy. The flip side is that, through photography, you can make people happy by portraying them in a flattering way.

Magnus Davidson

This is my son Magnus - he is a keen (and good) cyclist and as I photograph him at lot at races he is now very relaxed at having his picture taken. However this one is a zoom shot as he waits at the start of the race, where for once I got the light just right!
