16-45 vs Sigma 17-70

I have waffled between these two lenses for a long time and bought both of them. The Sigma is great with a wide aperture, entended reach, and very good sharpness. However, the color rendition and optical quality of the Pentax has won out. I posted the Sigma on ebay yesterday (I can't really justify keep both lenses) and will keep the DA 16-45. I'm sure occasional seller's remorse will flash through my head, but I am happy with keeping the Pentax.

Agree with your verdict - the 16-45 has the best glass and is definitely my favourite DA lens and I use it a lot. Like you I have both lenses but I can just about justify keeping them both. At the longer reach the Sigma has portrait advantages that I can use and since I have two DSLRs, I have them fitted with each lens - but really a luxury. Who cares?

I have never used the Sigma because after buying the DA16-45 I wouldn't need anything else for that range and purpose. The extra reach is not so useful for portrait since it's not fast enough to get the shallow DOF I might want.

I am probably one of the biggest fans of the 16-45 but for portrait purposes I like something a little longer. In fact, I have an excellent 105mm SMC Takumar f/2.8 lens on my Pentax Spotmatic and nothing beats it. Spoiled for choice, I am but I am worth it !!!

I had the 17-70 on my Sony, but shifting to Pentax made the 16-45 appealing. I agree, the DA is just too good a lens; I'll miss the Sigma's extra tele range but love what 16mm (and this lens overall) can do! This lens, a 50 prime, and a 55-300 make for easy choices and a compact kit.. but of course that's not all, I had to go buy some older PK manual-focus lenses to play with :^)

It depends how you need the better zoom range in one glass or prefer better quality of the 16-45. Personally me, I prefer the pentax because of the IQ. There are many situations when I would like to be with the sigma but... there is no ultimate happiness. Maybe a 16-50 2.8 will be better but... it comes with DA* price :). About the universality, maybe one cheap but nice sigma 18-125 will be great.
