New Website: Photo Location Scout

Hi, just wanted to float an idea that I'm putting together and gauge some interest.

What I'm doing is trying to put together a categorized compilation of great spots to shoot in Portland. This is mainly for portrait kind of shoots, not so much nature or architectural. I'd like to get a big enough list a cool hidden or well known spots for it to serve as a starter resource for photographers both local and visiting, and then have a forum where people can share their locations (then use the forum to help build the list).

My question to start with is; does this sound like something you would like to use? And how likely would you be to take part in the community and share your locations? Obviously how far this goes depends heavily on these two factors, because I want it to be a free service.

The end goal is to make the Portland site a template, and then hand it off to other photographers in other cities. If there is interest, and we get people adding to the list in just a few other large cities, then there will also be an iPhone app where users can upload GPS tagged pics directly.

I already have the website, and hosting. So does this sound helpful, or are there enough resources out there already that this would be redundant?

Good luck on getting photographers to give up there favorite secret shooting places, especially if it's not that well known. But who knows..i might be wrong...

I agree with @metakephoto. You aren't going to get people giving up their "secret" locations. In fact most production houses have people that are employed just for location scouting and it is a major element of business.

Yes metakephoto and NXTFoto make a good point but if you do get such a template made I would probably use it.

Good luck,

I would also be interested as Kenneth said. I have 2 engagement sessions to do this summer and would like to scout out some nice locations.

truth be told, I would read it but not add to it.

i will openly share my locations when talking with other photogs in person, but i don't think i would share my great spots openly with the world.

i reiterate that i would like to read it though and there are probably enough people out there who would contribute to it.

go for it.

Maybe this will all be solved when GPS tagging is universal? ;)

It's not in Portland, but Dawson's Creek in Hillsboro is a great place! I've seen several shoots there during my lunch hour. I too am scouting for on location shoots.

Thanks for the input everyone. I probably won't get many of the best secret spots, but I'm still hoping I can get a rudimentary interactive and constantly updating kind of guide for photographers. The kind of thing that most of us locals won't have much use for, but will be a big help for us if it's set up in a city we don't know.

I'll try to keep everyone interested informed of the progress.

I agree. You may not end up with many "special" spots, but you should get a good guide that would be usuful to many. Portland alone is a big place. I'm sure even the most experienced local would find someplace in your guide they haven't shot before.

I'd think photographers would get the most use out of it when looking for specific locations or features. Say if they were looking for "train tracks" or "open field" or "old warehouse" or whatever, a collected guide like this could come in handy to find similar locations in such a large and spread out metro area.
