Questions and Answers:
Q: So are we all supposed to shoot the exact same shot?
A: Nope. I suggested three poses from the Bumble and Bumble book they provided me. I actually like the poses and so do they. One setup station can accomplish all three poses which I will concentrate my shooting on. There are 13 employees so I am focusing on capturing three photos each of the 13 employees for a total of at least 39 images by me. I am doing this so that the salon will safely have photos of each employee to use for their website profile picture. People can come and go on my setup station. There will be room for about 3 or 4 other setup lighting stations inside or outside of the salon. As far as what is shot on the other 3-4 stations is up to each group, or we can plan ahead and decide. I will share the Bumble and Bumble book and other pictures with everyone as to the looks they like, but also they said they are open to the direction given to them by the photographer. The 13 employees will come in groups of 3 or 4 throughout the day, spending about 20-30 minutes at each setup and rotating through each setup station. Hopefully only one or two photographers is/are shooting at one time and the others are assisting, and then trading off.

Q: Are we shooting while they are open to the public?
A: Au Salon is always closed for normal business on Sundays. The salon owner is opening up the salon only for our shoot.

Q: Also if the salon uses one of our images, are they going to credit the photographer on the website?
A: I requested that the photographer be credited with any photo that is posted to Au Salon's website and the salon owner had no issues with the request.

I know there were many of you who voiced an interest on attending this photo shoot on my other thread. I wanted to set the date which I have done now before we conducted the official sign up.

I sat down with the salon today and discussed the client's expectations and also PDX Strobist's expectations. These included things such as how the stylists will style their hair, what type of style clothes to wear, the makeup to be applied, what jewelry is appropriate, the different poses to capture, the backgrounds to be used, etc. Nothing has been decided yet on these details but rather I pointed out that Au Salon and Strobists will need to have some dialog and make decisions before the day of the shoot.

1.) So are we all supposed to shoot the exact same shot? Since they seem to have high expectations on what they want.

2.) Are we shooting while they are open to the public?

3.) Also if the salon uses one of our images, are they going to credit the photographer on the website?

4.) Is each photographer going to photographer every stylist at the salon? So there would be a consistency in the shots. And if so, how are you going to co-ordinate it?

and i'm sure there's more questions, but that's all I can think of right now

I have been doing a lot of research on how to setup different portraiture lighting scenarios and also posing models for portraiture shots. I have been reading Monte Zucker books and others about light setup and posing which I mostly understand. What I lack is the field experience executing the different light setups and getting the look I am creating in my head. To be honest that is what I use the PDX Strobist meetups for is to try and create the looks I see in my books at our meetups. I download my pictures after our meetups and say yup I nailed that one or geez I butchered up that one, and I try to remember what I did right or wrong.

I am thinking it would be nice to concentrate on a light setup and pose and shoot tethered to a computer. I would immediately analyze the shot and make adjustments until I get what I want. I think that is my stumbling block for me at location meetups is that I don't really know how I'm doing until I get home to my computer. By shooting tethered or live view into a portable DVD player I can correct on the fly and get instant feedback on what I'm doing right and wrong. So I'm interested in how you guys learn over your shoots, am I the only one with this learning curve problem?

For those of you who are confirmed in the Au Salon shoot would you be interested in getting together to try and reverse engineer some lighting setups and poses? I am not proposing a new PDX Strobist meetup here but rather an informal get together like at my house. Not 16 people like we had last weekend at my place, but a few to shoot and then gather around the computer. We can shoot each other or I can get some friends to stand in. We would shoot tethered to my laptop and then analyze on a monitor. I think I will do this sometime or another just for my learning. I'm sorry Admins if this is the wrong way to ask if people just want to hangout, maybe I should've emailed everyone separately.

I'd be up for it too, but i propose we meetup somewhere downtown...under a bridge or somewhere outside in the evening.

I understand the luxury of shooting tethered, but i still believe its a luxury and not a necessity...

I'd be interested in this too Nuel. Scheduling isn't a huge problem, will have some company in town the first couple of weeks of Sept though.

I’m sorry I know it is great to get any opportunity to shoot but this falls into a different category than just a TFP shoot. You are about to provide photography services for free to a business who would otherwise be paying for the service. Just portraits alone of 13 people for web use would run well over $1k not to mention all the other photos they will be provided with that may be used for promotion. I hate to be a bad apple but I just don’t agree with giving away photography services for free. In the end it devalues the profession.
admin
ShutterCraze (NUEL) Posted 10 years ago. Edited by ShutterCraze (NUEL) (admin) 10 years ago
@ Alleh Lindquist

Thank you for your comments and point well taken. This meetup has been a very sensitive issue for us and has been discussed at great lengths on my other thread. I understand some of us have problems with this arrangement and have chosen not to participate. The shooters attending this meetup know that they will not be paid for their time, yet know what they expect to gain in his/her own way. On the other hand, if we as PDX Strobist advertise in Portland that we offer free photography services to anyone then yes I would say that would be a problem.

As for me I am not a professional photographer, my photography is a hobby I enjoy doing after working 80-90 hours a week at my job. It is a release for me but I do realize some people make a living at my hobby. I shoot on occasion family members, friends, company functions, etc as a favor where each would have paid money for a professional photographer. But I have never considered the professional who didn't make money that day because of me so my bad. I've known individuals at Au Salon for a while and they are friends and that is how this whole thing came to. I offered a favor without their soliciting for a service. I am trying to come to terms with just how much this meetup is so borderline and how much of my shooting in the future devalues a profession I enjoy.

Alleh,
Totally understand your concerns and frankly they are part of the reason I didn't initially sign up for this one. But I also think that it is a tremendous opportunity for a group of 15 amateurs. The salon is not getting a single professional photographer with guaranteed results and a uniform, exclusive, finished product. They are going to have to put up with 15 photographers and several different stations and a full day of shooting. I think their monetary gain is at least partially offset by 1) the hassle on their part, 2) providing us with a location for a meetup, and 3) the benefit to those in attendance (many of which don't remotely have the skills to compete with any real pro). It's more of a win-win situation. While a commercial, paid photographer may be losing out, given barosborough's experience, I'm not sure the owner's of this salon would likely be happy, paying customers anyway.

Anyway, I think your concerns are well noted. But I also don't want to limit our group. I know working with the dance studio was a great opportunity for me. They will never use the vast majority of our images (and I'm sure none of mine), they had 30 photographers take over their building, and put up with us for an entire day. At least 29 of those photographers would have never had the chance to get that experience without them opening their doors. So for the useable shots they ended up with, I actually think we came out ahead.

I don't want to start advertising our services and competing with any local commercial photographer. I don't want our hosts to start thinking of us as an alternative to a commercial photographer. However, if another cool opportunity or idea for a shoot comes up, I think the trade for images is about all we as a group have to offer to a potential location. I appreciate Nuel's work on this, and am really happy that people are putting these mini-meetups together. I actually wish now that I had signed up earlier. If you don't feel comfortable, do not attend, but I hope you will make it to the next one.

Just another $.02- which ain't worth much these days.

This shoot has taken on a very fine line between shooting for educational/fun purposes and stealing from potential clientele. And Nuelle stated above that he will be shooting the main grunt work of the day and whether he is shooting it for free or pay, he'd still be the one doing the main shots for Au. And the other 14 people are going to be able to benefit from a fun day of shooting and learning with no expectations.
And this particular salon has already worked with another photographer who shot the stylists for free (and there wasnt 14 other photographers that got to experience the shoot and benefit from it)

So all in all, I understand both sides of the situation...
Alleh Lindquist 10 years ago
I just wanted to drop in a little business practice sense for anyone who may not understand that side of photography. I don't really think it's a big deal. More often than not the person or people your shooting free photos for would not be hiring someone else if they were not getting it done free. If they wanted the guarantee of a professional they would hire someone. Shooting for free or cheap is how you get started.
DaveWeav 10 years ago
@Alleh - I completely understand your position on shooting for free or cheap and appreciate your opinions. I really like your style and would love to see how you would approach this type of shot. I am doing more sports portraits and think I would learn a lot from being able to watch your setup.

@PhotoInference

Good question. I know I will be camped out at the same set location for the entire day to be consistent with my shots. I will spent aprox. 15-20 minutes per model before I need to quickly moving on to the next model. I think I will leave it up to the groups if they want to move or stay. Moving will be the challenging part because the workflow will be quick. I would encourage only one person shooting at one time while the others hold/move lights and view histograms and images with the shooter. I think this helps learning on our side and not confuse models on the other side. We are going to meetup one hour before the models arrive so I was planning to take that time to arrange the set locations and work out how we are going to shoot through the day. I will be going over to the salon this week to capture images of the location to show you folks what you have to work with.

Just a reminder that the salon will be opening for us to setup at 9:00am, then the first group of models will be arriving at 10:00am. I'd like for all of us to be onsite at 9:00am to go over details as well. The Salon is smaller compared to the pictures because of my wide angle lens, and ya those are 2x4 bank fluorescent lights up in ceiling. There are some tracklighting too. Maybe we can play with the lights on and off. It might be a good idea for you to bring a wide angle lens as well as your portrait lens. Is anyone bringing a ringlight? I am bring a portable backdrop, something else you may want to bring too. Oh ya there is a Starbucks nearby as well as other places to eat throughout the day.
afraid caption [deleted] 10 years ago
I was thinking about bringing my ringlight and I was thinking about staying with it most the day....? Not sure if that would work or not but just another idea I'm playing around with. I feel like I don't have a good grasp of what styles they like. Are we photographing the stylists or their styles on models?? I know your planning on getting the shots they want but I'd like to at least try to give them what they want.
admin
ShutterCraze (NUEL) 10 years ago
Sorry for the confusion, we are photographing the actual employee stylist. Although those girls will probably be styling each others hair if that makes sense. As far as styles I posted a Bumble and Bumble link earlier to show you what kind of look they like. I have a book to go over with everyone at 9:00am to also illustrate the look they like. We are also encouraged by the salon to take fun candid or fun posed shots too.

@metakephoto

I had the same idea about the front area. I was going to take those pictures off the wall to have a nice background and natural light coming in on right side. That space was too tight for my light stands so I decided to move outside. I think that space would be awesome to shoot with a ringlight. As far as that very back hallway it does have a short wall of mirrors which I thought about maybe covering with large sheets. Or maybe masking the hallway entry with a large sheet from ceiling-to-floor so that light coming from either room doesn't contaminate each other. Anyone has something we could use to mask off the back hallway like an old bedsheet linen or something more opaque?

I'm sorry, but I can't attend this. I need to travel to The Dalles on sunday and won't be able to make both. :(

Metakephoto: My idea was to have a beauty dish directly and in front of the model, with two soft kickers on each side of them. I also wanted to try and do something that looked sort of futuristic, or distopian futuristic. Gel'd back hair, with the background knocked down and that midtone detail cranked for that gritty look that would make the subject just *pop* out of the frame. Now that i won't be able to make it, you have to do it jeff ;)

Have fun and I can't wait to see the pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Please go to my Photostream and view the names of the salon employees. I spoke with the salon's webmaster and he says full JPEG with sRGB colorspace assigned is fine. My file sizes are about 5-9 Mbytes that I'm uploading to the gallery. Also to receive credit for your work on photos that maybe selected to be used on the salon's website, enter whatever name you wish in the "name" field (after you have already entered gallery and hit the Upload icon) as you are prompted so when uploading to the gallery. This name that you enter will be seen and used by the webmaster to give credit to the photographer on Au Salon's website.

ShutterCraze (NUEL) 10 years ago
To your point yes even 72 dpi would be sufficient to use on the website and be a smaller file size. I felt this way to keep everyone's workflow roughly the same without compressing images too much from raw. If anyone is against sending larger than 72 dpi JPEG because of dail-up speeds or afraid of image being reproduced than I won't force you to submit the larger size. Hopefully 160-240 dpi JPEG is OK with everyone.

Hello Au Salon participants,

I would like to show the salon and their webmaster the results of our meetup very soon. But before I do share my gallery with them I want to make certain that I have everyone's efforts uploaded. So far only three photographers and myself have uploaded images to my gallery website. I understand busy schedules and if more time is needed for post processing than I'm OK with that. I just want to make a nice statement with a variety of your work all at the same time if possible. Please shoot me a very short flickr email if you are choosing not to share your work for good reason or if you intend to get to it on your time. The instructions are at the top my the Au Salon thread on how to upload your pictures. And thanks again for your free time and efforts.

Thanks, Nuel
