Just in case any of you are into sports car racing I just spent the last week posting race pics I took last weekend at the Le Mans race in Utah. They are here at my new twin Flickr site.

See you all tomorrow,

There was a big push to get PIR upgraded to hold LeMans here, unfortunately it failed. You have some great pics, love the colors of autoracing.

oooo I like cars.... looks like you've been at it awhile. I've always thought it would be cool to go to PIR w/a digital. (been film till a month ago ;)

I was just thinking that I should be taking some car shots w/all this 'diffused sunlight' we've been having ;)

@Whoowl - Did they really try to get LeMans over here to Portland? That's awesome.

I'd love to shoot auto racing, these are awesome shots Ken!

When the season gets into swing, maybe we can do a mini meetup or something, or something on a smaller scale, where there would be the dirt tracks with the sprint cars..

I'll have to do some research on that, maybe set up a little mini meetup for that :)

We had the LeMans series here for a few years. 2006 was the last race here unfortunately. Best racing @ PIR in a decade. But along w/Champ Car they are now gone. The track did get upgraded this past winter (new paving and reconfigured curves), but unfortunately the facility has a long way to go before we attract another big series. The old wood bleachers are just plain scary. The tower, the bridge, the restrooms are also in pretty sad shape.

That said, I can probably put together a mini-meet up at PIR during a track day. Or maybe even during the historic races (so I don't have to miss out on the track day myself).

I have been wanting to go shoot a race for some time. Too bad all the good racing has left.. Let me know what you come up with.

I was really embarrassed the last few years that the Le Mans series came here. Embarrassed for the piss poor turn out of fans (the last time there was a decent turn-out for IMSA's brand of big time sports car racing here was in 1991) and especially for the crappy track. And talk about a lack of promotion! The highest form of sports car racing on the planet was in town and the average Portlander, even the gearheads, had no idea they were here at all. I'm talking about huge factory programs from Corvette, Audi, Acura, Porsche, Ferrari and others spending gobs of money on cool technology, amazing engineering and some of the world's greatest drivers for top honors with which to promote their products world-wide. How could that be? I was thinking "so this is how that tree in the forest must have felt." The course itself is OK, but the rest of the facility is so totally Mickey Mouse as to be ridiculous. I'm much happier going to Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Monterey, or where ever to see them, rather than endure another experience like the 2006 event where I found myself apologizing a lot. The only reason they get any big time racing here - PIR's ace in the hole - (last I heard they hope to get the IndyCar series next year) is the lack of alternative road courses in the Northwest that can handle such a race. I love Le Mans racing, but I'm happy they no longer come here. We don't deserve them.

No I won't be there this weekend but I do plan on going for this...

www.portlandhistorics.com/

...the second weekend of July. I usually only go for a few hours and I usually take my two "doglets" Pee Pee and Napoleon so that I can sort of be walking them and looking at the beautiful old race cars at the same time. If you're free maybe several of us can go together.

I will be at the historics as well, and would love to get together. While they have historically been pretty good about amateur photographers, maybe we can get official passes?

Official passes of some kind would be cool. I don't know anybody involved with the historics and so the only way I know of to get a pass is to use my SCCA credential to sign up as a worker, but then I'd have to, of course, spend a bunch of time working. The last three or four years I was happy to just lurk around the paddock with my dogs for a few hours, but if there was a way to get passes to the corners then maybe I'd leave the dogs at home.

PS - Either way it would be cool for those of us who are interested to go as a group.
