Summer is almost here, so i'm wondering if anyone has a pool that they'd like to volunteer for a pdx strobist pool party? And to make things clear, not a kiddie pool (but i guess that could be fun too)

I know a pool but it doesn't have any water... in fact you know that pool too. Now I need to think about underwater gear...

I know that pool! Great view, and a free place to stay right there too!

Possibly a pool in someones backyard (with water in it), so we could have a BBQ and shoot some underwater photography with models.

Oh sure, now I have to go buy even more gear.

I only have a cheapie underwater 35mm camera that I would use. Maybe we can rent a professional underwater camera or camera housing and lights and split the cost between everyone.. And we'd just take turns using it. Cause there's no reason to go out and buy anything for a 1 time shoot.

Jimmy has a 1D, and Whoowl's got a D3, we could test just how 'weather sealed' they really are..

ok, maybe not :)

pool party sounds like a fun idea though!

yeah we can just stick the D3 and a couple SB800's in ziploc bags and do an underwater testing..strobist style...the D3 is weather sealed, right...j/k

Well if anyone can find some non lubricated clear condoms, it'll be an awesome pool party.

Haha. Gotcha. ;) But it would be really cool if someone could waterproof their point-and-shoot camera. It would be even more fantastic if we could find a way to trigger our flashes from the waterproofed point and shoot.

Or... You know... We could just have a gathering without any photography...

Or maybe not.

Love how everyone is volunteering my camera for water testing...

@Whoowl: we'll you have 2 cameras...j/k

@Auzigog: we could always kick it old school/available light underwater. But it would be fun to try and figure out how to shoot strobes underwater.

People trust a lot more important (and costly) things to condoms. Still not going to try it though...

We could try the old cardboard tube trick where you shoot down a cardboard tube that has been put into the water. The end works like a lens and as long as the water inside is not moving much the image is fairly stable (but small).
thinkable straw [deleted] 10 years ago
@ whoowl:

Kind of like when you plug one end of a straw, the air pressure keeps the water from filling the tube?
Whoowl 10 years ago
@Meeker - Nothing to do with air pressure, I think it is more that the tube doesn't allow waves to disrupt the water inside, so it looks like still pond at the bottom that you can see through
thinkable straw [deleted] 10 years ago
ahhhhh.... That's really neat, i'd be willing to try it.

Anybody found a pool yet? ^_^

metakephoto PRO Posted 10 years ago. Edited by metakephoto (admin) 10 years ago
@GeoFX: Nope, but there's gotta be someone in this group that has access to a pool??

August would be the perfect month for this shoot....and a private pool would be ideal...
GeoFX 10 years ago
Perhaps we can try Craigslist, TFP... time for pool. ^_^

I suggest we go for a White Water rafting on White Salmon river
and first I can use my water guns that I did not touch for a year.
second, we can do some really cool rafting action strobe shot.

Anyone second my idea?

Just bringing this post back. The talk about water shoots made this come to mind.

I do have access to a pool at my apartment, I dont know what it would take to rent it out so the others could not use it. If possible. It isnt no HUGE but it is a decent size!

I was hoping for someones backyard pool....Cause if we did it on a weekend a public pool would be swamped with kids.
GMKWS 9 years ago
I Have an above the ground pool about is decent size i also have a Spa And A Fire Pit in my backyard. but i would need to know the size of the group and work out details if this works for you.
admin
OregonVelo 9 years ago
GMKWS... I think you would be the one setting the size limit since it is your place.
GMKWS 9 years ago
Let me see what a good day would be and if someone wants to email me and go over any ideas that would be great.

GMKWS - I love the idea of an above-ground pool. Actually, I wasn't feelin' the pool idea until you mentioned an above-ground. If you want any help setting a shoot up, just let me know. I would be happy to help with the logistics.

@coupeowner: so why would an above ground pool be better? just curious

If we got enough people to chip in we could always rent a pool at a community center.

Jeff-
1) Nice low angles from poolside without being on your belly (good for lazy fat bastards like myself). A swimmer coming toward the camera popped into my mind.

2) For some reason a model on a float w/ drink & cigarette in hand, in an above-ground pool, plus some kid toys in front of the pool also immediately jumped into my brain.

I have a Canon point-n-shoot (S80) w/ a waterproof housing. No accommodation for off-camera flash though.

What about Mt. Hood Community College pool? Worth asking maybe. I just bought one of these www.ewa-marine.de/index.php?id=594 so I would at least have it just in case for shooting a whitewater kayaker in a couple weeks. Was planning to shoot a swimmer and a diver as well.

It just so happens to be that Dennis (dannotti) and I setup an above ground pool last weekend at his place. What do you guys think about having a meet here on say July 11th or 12th? His house is located in Washougal about 25 minutes from Portland. Here are some shots.

that place looks great to me....is that a tennis court too, right of the basketball hoop?

Looks great!

A BBQ would be fun to have with the pool party at my house. Also our spa has underwater lights that can have colors added to change color of water, good for night shots.
