Hey Everyone,

There seemed to be too many questions and problems with the upload and sharing of pictures with models. So we are going to simplify things to make it way easier.

Ok, here is the new instructions below. I couldn't find a good way to protect the images for download unless you log in, so models still have to register for an account and login. This is really simple and I think it is a small hurdle for them if they want their pictures instantly over the net. Photographers, pretty simple for you too now.

John

Photographers - Upload your Pictures!

1. Navigate to the main gallery, and then find the gallery for the model or group of models.
2. Click on the album to enter it, and then at the bottom of the page click on "add items".
3. You can now upload your images by clicking browse and locating the image on your computer.
4. If you have many files, either click the "more upload boxes" or alternatively you can place all your files in a zipfile and then upload that insteadof having to keep searching for each image.
5. Important! Make sure to fill in the caption with as name/company name - shoot date and choose "Set title to Caption" from the pulldown. If you forget to do this the model won't know who took the pictures.
6. Click upload. Wait for it to complete.

Note: The upload script won't run longer than 10 minutes. If it times out you will need to either upload less pictures at a time, or use a smaller zipfile if you are doing it that way.

THAT'S IT! Now the models have full access to the images, and can move, delete, download, organize, whatever.

Models - Creating a Gallery Account

It is your responsibility to create an account if you want copies of your photos. It takes less then two minutes to do, and is very easy. All you need to do is fill out the form, and pick a name. Whatever you put for "Full Name" will be visable so choose something you are comfortable with sharing.

Once you fill out the form, it will email the moderators for approval. This could take a couple hours depending on if we have real lives or not. They will also setup a gallery to hold your pictures and make sure that the photographers can upload pictures to it. As soon as everything is setup and your account is approved and should get an email.

Models - Downloading your photos
Here is how you download all the images in one big zipfile once they are uploaded.

1. Log into the Gallery, you will automatically be placed in your gallery.
If you don't have an account you will need to make one.
2. Under Item Actions choose "Add Album to Cart"
3. When you get to the cart screen, at the top right, pull down and select "Download in Zip" (note: you can remove any pics you are not interested in dowloading before choosing this too)
4. Your download will start after a bit, and you will get a file that has all the pictures in it.
5. Please consider deleting pictures you have downloaded. This will make it so when you come back to see if new ones have been added, it will be easier to find them, as well as you won't have to download them again. It will also save space on the server which is helpful.

Looking forward to the changes.

Went to zip my files and realized I don't have any zip software on my home computer. Is there any freeware people are using? Winzip is $25 - not a big deal, but figured w/ the computer savvy folks out there, you may know of an alternative. Oh, I'm running a PC w/ win xp.

Cool. I actually got 2 images loaded up, but I had intended to load all my PDX Strobist Meeting images and I don't know....I just wound up burning discs for Sugar Q and hand delivering them. Also, I didn't want to go through all those photos adding text strips.

@aizogog - I second 7zip it's free and works well. Also, the zip thing is OPTIONAL, it's just a convenience thing for most people.

@Ken, just make sure that you fill out the caption information with your name and shoot date. We just want to make sure the model knows which image came from who/when... Hopefully, everyone will that stuff in the EXIF info as well.

@OregonVelo - Joe's name is fixed

Has anyone tried this out with the simplified process? I just uploaded all my pics from the last shoot for SugarQ and it seemed to work really well but then I am a bit of a bad test candidate since I helped set it all up.

Would really like to see this get used by people.

If we add our photo info and copyright at the bottom of each photo, aren't the models going to get hassled if they want to print it?

People should make sure to set their caption as per the instructions and then when you mouse over the images it shows "Photograher's Name - Date"

I think that if you want to add your name and info to the actual image, it should be done BELOW the print so it doesn't distract from the photo. Everyone involved including the models knows that Strobist meets are not for commercial purposes but education and fun.

@Whoowl: There's a small problem with the website. If there are no photos already in a gallery, it prompts you to log in.

Obviously if there are already photos in the pool, it works fine.

Just thought I'd let you know, because I can't upload any photos to the new galleries from the mini meetup.

Blah! Ok, I forgot to set the "upload" permission on the new galleries. Should be good to go now. I just tested it here at work.
