Hey guys. I just had a thought. What would everyone think about having a monthly contest? We could pick a different theme every month, submit photos then vote on them.

Maybe we could base the themes on the "On Assignment" posts from the Strobist blog. Or maybe we could pick our own.

I think it would be fun.

We might want to make a rule that no photos taken at a meetup can be used for the contest. That way everyone has to go out and apply their lighting skills in other situations.

Sounds good to me, we also should have rules where you can't use any images prior to the date the contest starts for each month. :)

Sounds like a fun idea! With all the talents people we have here, it would be great to see all the creative idea's.

Sounds good to me, you wanna head this up Auzigog?
How about "no" voting and people can just express their comments (but i guess it wouldnt be a contest with no voting, ugh..)?
And add that everyone must submit a "behind the scenes" shot if possible.

I like it! Anonymous voting would be nice. And I like the setup photo requirement too. Could the voting somehow be restricted to members/contacts
of PDX Strobist?

I like the idea and I can go either way with the contest. I like the idea of having a theme and just seeing what people come up with. Or like a scavanager hunt or "where in the world... i mean PDX".

OK Auzigog,

Pick a theme so we can get going. Yes the behind the scenes shot should be a requirement.

I say forget the voting and just see what people come up with. I always hated voting for pictures anyway...

I agree with ken... let's get going!

We should get some theme ideas first?
(ex. a particular color, feeling/mood, lighting, subject)

How about "Self Portraits" as a theme? Since we already got the ball rolling..but we'd be showing updated self portraits...Cause the one I ended up showing was a couple years old and kenneth barton's shot was further back...and of course keep in mind that this is a strobist group when taking your picture :)

Okay. I'll try to get this all organized by the end of the week (or early next week).

If I had the time, I'd write a quick app using the flickr API to authenticate everyone as being part of this group and create a quick voting system. If you guys want to do this contest using a normal forum thread, I can probably get that application written by the time next month's contest rolls around.

Here are the rules I've heard so far. Any complaints with this set? ...
1) Photos must be taken AFTER the time the contest begins.
2) Must submit setup shot(s) as well
3) No photos from meetups can be submitted to the contest.

General concept of themes: We can take any approach on the themes. We can do a "scavenger hunt", we can take an On Assignment from Strobist and use that or we can aim for specific moods or subjects.

I think Self Portraits is a great theme for the first month.

If you guys really want to do voting, I have a pretty good system that I use with my high school classes. I do weekly photo contests with all my photography classes
for example, here is a recent photo challenge and the voting pages

basically, if you can number them, you can use a survey site like surveymonkey for the voting

It would be fun, Wieden Kennedy's 25th anniversary year book has something very interesting, it is very similar to this, we can raise up a topic, then everyone submit a photo for this topic. for example, "awkward moment of the day", or "the 2AM you" such and such, it could be lot of fun.

I think the topic shall not be too general, got to be very specific.
